What Oilers’ Sam Gagner accomplished in his Gretzky record tying 8-point night

    Getty Images

Wayne Gretzky. Paul Coffey. Sam Gagner.

Normally, this would be a "which one of these things is not like the others"-like quandary, but not after the Edmonton Oilers' 8-4 victory against the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night.

That's because Sam Gagner — we repeat SAM GAGNER — tied the Oilers' single-game team-scoring record shared by two Hockey Hall of Famers with eight points. Gagner had four goals, four assists and was a plus-6 in 17:28.

"It's tough to say. I didn't have that good of a first period, but then everything I touched was going in," said Gagner, 22, via the Oilers. "It's a pretty surreal feeling. Everyone on the bench was just telling me to stay out there for the last five minutes. I didn't have the legs to stay out there that long. It's a pretty good feeling. I'm going to cherish it."

What did this guy have for breakfast Thursday morning? "Same as always, oatmeal with berries."

Here are all the points on Gagner's incredible night:

With the Oilers down 2-0, Gagner assisted on Taylor Hall's second-period goal. He scored his first of the game at 7:26, followed by an assist on Ryan Whitney's first of the season. Then he went nuts on the third: Scoring three goals and assisting on tallies by Cam Barker and Jordan Eberle.

So how amazing was Sam Gagner's night? Consider …

    With his eight-point night, Gagner:

    • Became the first NHL player to score eight points in a regular-season or playoff game since Mario Lemieux of the Pittsburgh Penguins on April 25, 1989, against the Flyers (five goals, three assists). Mario also had the last regular-season eight-point game on Dec. 31, 1988 against the Devils. (The five goals, five ways game.)

    • Not only joins Gretzky, Lemieux and Coffey, but names like Peter Stastny, Bryan Trottier and Rocket Richard in having scored eight points in a game.

    • Began the night tied in points (22) with players like Tyler Kennedy, Steve Ott and Steve Downie; he's now tied in points (30) with players like Milan Hejduk, Danny Briere and Shane Doan.

    • Collected exactly one-eighth of his point total from his last 111 NHL games.

    • Scored more points in one game than the following players have scored this season: Zenon Konopka, Matt Hendricks, Adrian Aucoin, Marty Reasoner, Mike Rupp, Mathieu Darche, Roman Hamrlik, Patrick Kaleta, Matt Stajan and, yes, Scott Gomez.

    • Scored as many points in one game than Paul Bissonnette has scored in his career (120 games).

Something tells us that Gagner may have actually played himself off the trading block for the Oilers … unless this was an historic showcase for the benefit of the Blackhawks, of course.

Hear that sound? that's the sound of 1000s of fantasy hockey players adding Sam Gagner to their hockey team.

I was waiting for that to happen in my league but no one has yet. They'll probably have their mouse hovering over Add Player while watching the next Oilers game to see what happens lol

i love how a lot of people are trying to down play this accomplishment. even some saying he's a garbage player. this is his 5th season in the NHL, how many seasons in the NHL have you trolls played in? no one is comparing him to gretzky, or saying it's the most pts in a game. he's just the first one to score 8 pts in a game in like 24 years. all the super stars like malkin, ovie, crosby, stamkos, the sedins, etc haven't done this. stop trying to down play an awesome accomplishment. good for you gagner.

what the hell are you saying???? Sam Gagner did what he did, why do you want to rob him of that? He moves better than gretzky, and doesn't freaking whine like gretzky

What a night for Sam! Definitely the weight of the world lifted off him tonight. It's good to see him have such an epic night after being snake bitten for such a long period of time.

What's even more impressive is that none of his goals or assists were empty-netters. Not to say that it would have made a big difference had the net been empty...

I don't understand why the writer has to talk down on Sam Gagner in the first two paragraphs in order to set up his point. The kid is only like 22-23 years old and is a good player. Eight points in a game is incredible, we should be celebrating it, not putting him down because his name isn't good enough to be mentioned with Coffey and Gretzky yet. Different eras. Gagner will be a good player in this league for a long time.

If it's true that the Blackhawks were sulking by the end of the evening - and bemoaning an obvious attempt by the Oilers (late in the third period) to assist Sam Gagner in putting up points - when Gagner had a chance (in front of his home crowd) to tie or break a long-time record, I'm beyond disappointed. Every one of the players on Chicago's bench would love to have the opportunity to add his name to the NHL history books. How childish and selfish can grown men and professional athletes be?

On February 7, 1976 in a game between Toronto and Boston at Maple Leaf Gardens,
'Darryl Sittler' set an NHL record that still stands by tallying 6 goals and adding 4 assists for 10 points. Leafs won 11 - 4.
    • Willy Pen  •  3 months ago
It is just one of those nights when everything goes in. I remember watching the game that Darryl Sittler set the record with 10 points. It was another one of those nights that everything goes the right way.

Can we borrow Sam Gagner for the playoffs if we play the B-Hawks again?

Also... the Canucks should play home games at Rexall apparently.. and wear Oiler jerseys.. Apparently it's like B-Hawk kryptonite.

Where is the love for Darryl Sittler? Why keep yapping about who he TIED with 8 points in a game without acknowledging a player who had 10 points in a game. I saw Sittlers game as a kid he did it against the Bruins. It was sick. 4 goals and 6 assists as I recall.

Why was there no mention of Darryl Sittler's 10 point night against Boston? 6goals-4assists

should buy eberle a dinner for setting up his goals beautifully. sorry to take anything away from gagner but eberle is a superstar in the making. if he played on the east coast he'd be as hyped as claude giroux.
