Ryan Miller: ‘There’s no such trade’ that can fix Buffalo Sabres this season

    AP

Ryan Miller was pulled in the second period of the Buffalo Sabres' loss at the Detroit Red Wings on Monday night, having given up all five goals during the 5-0 defeat in just 24:32.

It was the Sabres' 11th loss (including two overtime losses) in their last 14 games.

"Yeah, well, it's not good hockey. It's not good from top down," Miller told reporters after the game, played in front of friends and family of the Michigan native. "I need to be better. Just can't seem to find a night where I can get in a groove. It's just … I don't know what the hell it is."

So what's the solution? A huge trade? A change behind the bench?

Miller said there's no external move that can reverse the Sabres' fortunes; that the responsibility lies within their dressing room.

From Miller after Buffalo's loss to the Wings:

"That's not my decision. If it's going to happen, it's going to happen in the locker room. If you guys really think there's going to be any kind of trade made anywhere that's going to affect this team any more than we can affect it in this locker room, you guys are just … I don't know what to think, because there's no such trade.

"There's not ever going to be a trade in the history of the NHL that's going to affect anything like that. There's no chance anybody comes into this team and just shakes it up or we can even move multiple players and get any kind of return … If you want to just destroy a team and just go out and be reckless and do something, yeah.

"But then there's going to be new guys in here, but other than that, this locker room's going to be pretty much the same, if not completely the same, and we've got to find it from in here. [Points to chest] We can't sit and wait for somebody else to f--king do it."

Miller had played better in recent games, giving up two goals in each game of a split against the Toronto Maple Leafs. But this was the second time in the last month he was pulled after giving up five goals.

Overall, Miller has a 3.29 GAA since being run over by Milan Lucic on Nov. 12, missing several games and suffering concussion-like symptoms.

As he said, there's no quick fix for this team coming from the outside. It begins with the players on this roster; more to the point, it should begin with Miller … but the Sabres have been waiting for that to happen all season.

Jacque Lemaire would disagree with his near miracle turn around last year... but Miller's point is still spot on... it's about within.

if only miller could play D and score goals as well... besides Vanek and to a lesser extent pomminville, everyone else is either injured or expecting to fill a bigger role than they can fill...

After watching the game last night not all the goals against the Sabre's were Miller's fault, that was a team loss from start. I saw no one doing a very good job. A Wing's fan.

Good thing you see this, most of the people, ESPECIALLY, the media just say that it's Miller's fault and that he needs to focus on playing perfect instead of whining. Does this article sound like whining to anyone?

Absolutely true. Just 3 of them.

I've always loved Miller's interviews, and now more than ever, I can really appreciate his honesty. He hasn't gotten any better from the start of the season, but at least he's acknowledged his shortcomings. I believe he cares about the team. It's clear he wants to succeed, even in the light of his staggering inconsistency. Now, as for the key to winning, I'm with him. I don't know.

Is Miller trying to exercise the Cammalleri trade clause?

I think Lindy did well with what he had to work with over his long tenure..but its really showing now that the players are not responding to him and its time for a change of scenery for him (and some players). Its just the nature of the beast..

Miller seems to be the only vocal leader in that room. The Sabres have talent, they don't have the leaders in place to get the most out of that talent on a day to day basis. Instead, we get a bunch of overpaid players with no confidence that are all slumping simultaneously. In our top 9, Vanek and Pominville are playing well, while Roy, Stafford, Leino, Boyes, Gaustad, Kaleta, and Gerbe are all contributing next to nothing, and Ennis is still sidelined. I'm sick of watching this team, they need a kick in the pants to get them believing again, but it's sad that they need to even get motivated to play. If that makes sense...

they dont really have that much talent, and there have been more vocal players in the dressing room than Miller. Millers really timid until reporters push him and then you get quotes like this. I doubt he says much to his team mates

Kaleta never gives less than his best. He's just not a scorer. That's why he's on the checking line with Goose (also not paid to score). Call-out whom you like, but leave Killer-leta off your list.

The only success this team had had over the years Is when Hasek and Miller were bailing out Ruff's inability to get the most out of his players.14 years of incompetence with Regier and Ruff
      • dude 4 months ago
wrong. they have won in spite of Miller not because of Miller
      • Shamus 4 months ago
        What did they win,nothing.They competed

The no goal was a joke Hasek did everything but score the old ,overpayed, slow, arogant and out played team stunk especially Gilmore..
Lindy was the coach..They never should have fired Nolan...

Miller has bailed the Sabres out enough in years past for him to earn some kind of a pass. But previously he would have an off game and then bounce back with something really solid, he's always had a few "soft" goals get past him but he'd ALWAYS re-set and make a handful of crazy saves right after. This season, I keep waiting for him to string something together and it just doesn't look like it's gonna happen.

I have always enjoyed Miller from when he played with Rochester to where he is now with the Sabres. It is clear he is a leader, is owning up to his shortcomings and knows he has to get better, and for him to be vocal about it like this, puts no doubts in mind about the sincerity of his commitment not just to his teammates and the Buffalo organization, but to his fans as well.

As a lifelong Sabres fan, I will always continue to support the players and the organization, but especially to Miller who has the hunger and desire to succeed and win at whatever it may take. For Miller as well as Buffalo, that fire hasn't gone out yet, we just need to put another log on it.

      All the best Buffalo,

      A TRUE SABRE FAN.

Ryan Miller has carried the mail for the Buffalo Sabres for a while now - almost as much as Hasek did. The new owner decided to spend some money on free agent signings that haven't worked out at all. I think it's funny that Wshynski want to see it "begin with Miller" when Ryan Miller is playing GOALIE IN THE NHL WHERE PUCKS HIT YOU IN THE HEAD ALL THE TIME WHILE STILL EXHIBITING CONCUSSION LIKE SYMPTOMS. I bet Wshyinski cries about paper cuts and wouldn't stand a chance writing about hockey on his laptop if he had a concussion. If Steve Yzerman was smart, he'd be making a phone call to Buffalo right now and seeing if he could snag Miller and solve his goalie problem in Tampa. Anybody who wants to blame Miller for Buffalo's record is a dunce. Even Patrick Roy got traded out of Montreal when the Habs coaches and management threw him under the bus, and it worked out pretty good for the Colorado Avalanche. I hope Ryan winds up in Tampa because he deserves better than this in Buffalo.

And to think, I was actually upset when Time Warner dropped MSG network...I liked the Sabres better when we were perpetually 1-2 players away with no hope of ever signing said players.

this season is pretty much lost. I would trade for players to start retooling for next year and not wait till the end of the season to do it. they need to get some better depth in free agency in the offseason too

My take on Miller's trade comments: it's not the player's, it's the coach.

Remember before the season started when Buffalo fans swore that Leino and Ehrhoff weren't terribly overpaid and that Buffalo would compete for the lead in the division and possibly the conference? Yeah, that was funny.

Miller should have been dumped last year. Now it's going to be real hard to get rid of this phony.

is it possible they dont respect thier coach?

There was not one single goal made on Ryan Miller last night than the ones that his defensemen let in on him.

Miller played fine. His team let him down. They were off watching Datsyuk's magic rather than covering their man.

It's about time articles are being written on this team underachieving, they should have made the conference finals this year, not be on pace for a lottery pick. I bought a Miller jersey last month even though I know there is a high chance he is traded for this exact reason, at least he has the balls to tell it like it is.
