Ryan Garbutt’s sneaky spear on Corey Perry leads to Game 5 ejection (Video)

The Dallas Stars tied the Anaheim Ducks in their division semifinal series with two wins on home ice. They were games in which they played a physical, antagonistic style against their visitors.

Forward Ryan Garbutt continued that style against the Ducks, back in Anaheim for Game 5 on Friday night, going after one of Anaheim’s stars in Corey Perry.

But since the NHL generally frowns upon spearing, it was a short night for Garbutt:

Garbutt was ejected at 9:11 of the first period for that spearing incident. Perry left the game but returned in later in the first period. Rather quickly, actually.

The Stars looked like they might make out OK in killing the ensuing 5-minute major, as Jamie Benn scored just 49 seconds after the penalty to tie the game at 1-1. But Rickard Rakell of the Ducks tipped home a Francois Beauchemin point shot just 26 seconds later to give the Ducks at 2-1 lead.

Will Garbutt face any supplemental discipline for this? Milan Lucic infamously earned just a $5,000 fine for spearing Danny DeKeyser in the how-do-you-do earlier in the postseason. Keep in mind, however, that Garbutt was suspended for five games for charging then-Duck Dustin Penner last October.

Keep in mind, however, that Perry had his own spearing incident in Game 4, which was called a slashing minor. Which incident do you think was worse: Garbutt on Perry or Perry on Benn?

There’s been way too much stickwork in this postseason, to be honest. And not the puck-handling kind.
