Report: Rick Nash on the trading block; are the Rangers ready to pounce?

    Getty Images

What is certain about the trade deadline is that the Columbus Blue Jackets will be open for business. The uncertainty is in the magnitude of their moves: Impending free agents, like Sammy Paulsson? Cancerous mistakes like Jeff Carter?

Or captain, star and face of the franchise Rick Nash …

Renaud Lavoie of RDS reported on Monday that an NHL general manager confirmed to him Nash is in play and has been offered around to some teams -- news that was confirmed by a second source.

This comes one week after John Shannon of Sportsnet reported:

I have received a couple of calls from friends of Nash, who claim that Rick is very unhappy with the way the franchise is going and realizes it will take five more years to rebuild, again. Nash is now telling people close to him that he would entertain being moved, but still will not be the one who asks for a trade.

Always one who didn't aspire to play in a big market with big pressure, it appears Nash now realizes that he might have to step into the spotlight in order to win. It is a very tough situation for a very classy player.

Columbus GM Scott Howson declined comment to Shannon ("John, I am not commenting on any rumours between now and deadline."); he did the same on Monday night when Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch asked for comment on the RDS report.

If Nash is available, and amenable to being traded to a large market, could the New York Rangers be the destination?

Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News offered this take, noting that a Rangers scout watched the Wild and Blue Jackets this week:

The Ranger scout's presence fuels a fire that started burning in January. A Columbus scout has attended at least two of the Rangers' past four home games, and Saturday the Blue Jackets sent three people, including GM Scott Howson, to the Rangers-Flyers game in Philadelphia.

NHL.com reported that Howson met with Flyers GM Paul Holmgren, but the Ottawa Sun's report speculated that Columbus "may demand" Brandon Dubinsky, prospect Chris Kreider and a No. 1 pick for Nash.

Dubinsky has slumped this season, with 24 points in 51 games. But he's a vital piece for the best team in the East at the moment; why mess with chemistry?

Well, because GM Glen Sather can add an elite goal scorer on Brad Richards' wing, and give Nash the elite playmaking center he's never had. Not just this season, but through 2018 when Nash's contract runs its course. How can they afford his cap hit of $7.8 million? Take Dubinsky's $4.2 million off the books and utilize the $15 million in cap space they're projected to have in 2012-13 to fill in the blanks.

But if Nash is available, the Rangers won't be alone in the bidding. The Washington Capitals had two scouts at the Jackets/Ducks game on Sunday, as did Dallas, Detroit and Pittsburgh. Portzline reports that Columbus assistant GM Chris MacFarland and pro scout Pete Dineen watched the Capitals and Sharks on Monday night in D.C.

(The Capitals, remember, have a treasure trove of young talent to move and Alex Semin's $6.7 million leaving their cap next summer.)

Nash has said repeatedly he wouldn't ask for a trade; is it time for the Jackets to ask him? Andy Newman of The Cannon writes:

The bottom line on any Nash rumors or potential deals: It's about time this team makes some smart business decisions. I believe re-signing Prospal was the first step. Identifying him as a key player that you want around young players was essential for Scott Howson to get the right pieces in place.

There will always be suitors for Rick Nash, and if a trade makes the most sense for the Columbus Blue Jackets, then they should take it. But that won't necessarily be easy to come by, and I don't think it's what Nash or the Jackets are looking for in this situation.

Are the Jackets preparing to finally take the leap?

Don't do it Howson...you'll have NO fan base left. He's the only reason to watch
    • Glenn  •  Columbus, Ohio  •  3 months ago
Nash IS the Columbus Franchise - might as well close up shop if you move him. You got away with the Jody Shelley move, you won't be so lucky if you move Nash. Our history of trades is not good and there is no room for error if you move the best player on your team.

It's a tough situation because as a fan you want Nash to have the opportunity to win but you don't want your franchise to be crippled in the process. This is what happens when non-hockey people run a hockey franchise.

No, this is what happens when your team cant even make a tape to tape pass.

The Jackets have nothing to lose at this point. 99% of the fans who still remain are die-hards, so they won't lose much more if they trade Nash. Better to think long-term and build for a Cup win someday instead of just being a mediocre team that includes Rick Nash forever.

"Howson met with Flyers GM Paul Holmgren" probably isn't what Blue Jackets fans want to hear.
      • BANZAI 3 months ago
Maybe he was trying to see if Holmgren would take Carter back? lol

I have been a diehard Jackets fan since they came into the league in 2000. But, I can honestly tell you that wherever Rick Nash goes, that will be my new team to root on. Rick is a classy guy and deserves to be on a team that is committed to winning. I am done with the Blue Jackets and their crappy management/ownership. Just another botched team that Buttman welcomed into the league.

I can't think of a player I feel more for than Nash. Great player, class guy, and surrounded with nothing. Oh well, I guess if he turns to drink he at least has Jeff Carter to hang out with.
      • Nick S. 3 months ago
I wouldn't mind seeing Rick with Philly. However that probably won't happen. They are stacked as it is.

Love to see him in a Penguin's sweater, but he isn't in their cap space and not sure who they could afford to lose to get him.
      • WINGS-2012 3 months ago
If for some reason Crosby doesn't come back, then the Pens have cap space and could use Nash.
      • Craig D 3 months ago
        your freakin kidding me.
      • WINGS-2012 3 months ago
I’m not kidding, Not knowing the true extent of Crosby's injury and the likely hood of him returning at a net worth cap hit of 8.7 million, who knows what could happen. Look, if for some reason Crosby doesn't return the Pens would look back at Nash as misted opportunity.

"The Washington Capitals had two scouts at the Jackets/Ducks game on Sunday, as did Dallas, Detroit and Pittsburgh."

Does Rick Nash really have to be scouted at this point?
Nope, he's the top 5 player in the league that no body wanted to talk about until now.
      • Holmesy 3 months ago
They're not scouting Nash - they're looking at some of the other guys on Columbus for potential inclusion in a multi-player deal, as well as examining exactly what Columbus needs so they can make an intelligent offer.

I hope the Maple Leafs are making a stong bid for Nash......these kind of guys are very rare to find.

Why do u think all the teams want Kreider? Drafted in 1st round as a high school player. Watch the dozens of YouTube videos. Nash has been a favorite of mine for years, but don't do it, Sather.

Wait till the offseason. If I were Slats I'd wait to see what happens to my young, developing team this year down the stretch and then #$%$ it during the offseason. There's no need to go all out this year to win
    • the immortal reg dunlop  •  Phoenix, Arizona  •  3 months ago
chris kreider is not any ol' prospect. it'd be very disappointing to a lot of blueshirt fans if they gave him up for anyone.
    • Crow the Robot  •  3 months ago
Rick Nash is a guy I'd compare to Jarome Iginla in the sense that neither of them have played on particularly good teams, and neither of them have had particularly great centres. Still, they've both somehow been able to produce incredibly.
    • Robotface74  •  New York, New York  •  3 months ago
definitely not gonna happen with the rangers. they arent going to give up their best prospect, and a first for a slumping scorer. i can part with dubi but its not worth ruining the chemistry. this deal isnt worth it.
    • nix  •  3 months ago
The NYRs are in 1st place in the East (for now). No disrespect intended to Mr. Nash, who has handled a terrible situation with dignity and class, but I don't see him as being a necessary piece of the puzzle for NY, anyway. If he likes low pressure markets, how will he handle MSG (and Torts)?

I wish the best for the guy and hope he finds a home in a winning, but low pressure, Western conference team.

great player...would cost the rangers to much, dont see it .

Don't do it Sather! This Rangers team is about chemistry and heart... and rocking the boat with a trade could ruin the season. Sure Nash is great... but it's not worth breaking up the NYR team which is clicking with this mixture of players. I've seen a trade demand for Nash of Dubinsky, Stephan, Krieder and a #1 draft pick. GTFO. Stand pat with your roster at the deadline Sather unless your offered a steal that only includes picks and minor league players.

Rick do yourself a favor and get out of Columbus. It's time for a change for you and for Columbus.
    • Kyle K  •  Rochester, New York  •  3 months ago
Please, that's all the Flyers need is for the Rangers to get that much better...Nash for Dubinsky and their #1 pick? I would pull the trigger faster than you can say "Scott Gomez".
    • dookie  •  3 months ago
i just don't understand how the blue jackets have had nash for 10 friggin years and never really gotten anyone to help him out. they got a #1 overall pick and just assumed the team would re-build. unreal. the rangers rarely use their first round pick on a sure thing anyway, so i wouldn't mind giving that up...dubinsky is not worth what he's being paid, but i really think kreider is going to be a good player. we'll see. should be a fun deadline.

It's "Pahlsson" not Paulsson. If you need a reminder of how to spell it check the Stanley Cup.

I can only imagine what boatload of players and picks/prospects that CBJ will be getting back for Nash. Some fool on Sportcentre threw the Canucks name in the Nash ring...god forbid what we'd have to give up for Nash, plus making room for that cap hit.
      .
Some team is going to be very happy by feb 27th for sure....
