Via puckhead Cam comes a very rare hockey collectible (at least in North America): a hand-painted, Detroit Red Wings' matyroshka doll. It's the first powerplay unit you can also use as a bookend!

According to Cameron, this one-of-a-kind item comes courtesy of his parents, who recently visited the Czech Republic and brought the Red Wings matryoshka back for him as a gift:

They said they walked by a store selling the dolls (apparently a huge thing over there), noticed a sign advertising NFL teams and wondered if they had NHL, too. Sure enough, they had a Red Wings one right at the front of the counter. It's a pretty awesome souvenir.

It seems only fitting that the Red Wings would get the nesting doll treatment, especially with Detroit's history of employing wooden Russians.

If you're having a hard time determining who's who from the front (if only there were numbers on their helmets! When will they learn!), Cameron was kind enough to include a photo of the dolls from the back, where each can be identified by his nameplate and jersey number.

From left to right, that's Zetterberg, Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Holstrom, and Franzen.

I find it ironic that Tomas Holmstrom and Johan Franzen -- two pretty massive dudes -- were made as the smallest pieces of the set. And gosh, teeny Johan Franzen is just adorable. Although I imagine he'd be a lot less effective if he were that small in real life.

Many thanks to Cam for sharing this with us.
