Ray Emery’s chance to start equals goaltending migraines for Blackhawks

137251159On the one hand, you have Corey Crawford of the Chicago Blackhawks saying that he's played "really good hockey and some not-so-good hockey" over the last several games.

On the other, you have Coach Joel Quenneville saying of Ray Emery: "Basically every time he's been in the net for us this year he's been consistent. He's been solid, predictable and dependable."

To no one's surprise, then, Ray Emery is starting on Tuesday night against the Colorado Avalanche, with every opportunity to wrestle the starting job away from Crawford.

This is, of course, what the Quenneville Blackhawks do, according to Adam Jahns of the Sun-Times:

This isn't anything new for the Hawks. Two years ago, Antti Niemi usurped a less-confident Cristobal Huet in February. A season before that, it was Nikolai Khabibulin over Huet.

But unlike those seasons and even partially last year, there is more onus on the goalie this season because the Hawks haven't shown a willingness to commit to defense for a considerable stretch and their puck-possession game has struggled. The fact that the Hawks are the only team without a shutout is an indicator of both.

Jahns writes that "the Hawks won't be pursuing a goalie. It will be either Crawford or veteran Ray Emery." Translation: This development is not good news for the Chicago Blackhawks.

This is not good news because Crawford's 3-year deal signed last May portends that he'd be the team's playoff goaltender. As GM Stan Bowman said: "Corey emerged as our go-to guy, that he earned the right to be our No. 1 goalie."

This is not good news because he's given up that right, at least temporarily and in the eyes of his coach.

He hasn't given up less than two goals in a game since Dec. 26, and has given up 3-or-more in eight of his last 10 starts. Now, he'll ride the pine to see if a journeyman in Ray Emery can take his gig.

Can the Chicago Blackhawks win a Stanley Cup with Ray Emery and an inconsistent Crawford as their duo? Sam Fels of NBC Chicago only sees one path that works: Batten down the hatches and play outstanding team defense in front of Emery. From Fels:

If the Hawks are going to have success, and the kind of memorable success, with Emery in net then their defense is going to have get real tight real quick. They're going to have to limit the amount of movement teams can make with the puck. Passes through the slot to the other side of the net can't happen. Time with the puck to make a move on Emery can't happen. Basically, they have to make sure that Emery sees every shot straight on. If he has to slide to cover one-timers and rushes, they'll have serious problems.

If the Blackhawks aren't looking outside the organization for a goaltending solution (paging Ryan Miller), then the best-case scenario is this: Emery has his run and eventually fades; Crawford returns, rested and focused, and Niemi's his way into the postseason where, let's remember, he was pretty damn good last season (2.21 GAA, .927 SV%).

Worst case scenario: The Chicago Blackhawks are going to have to win despite their goaltending. Ask the 2010 Flyers how that worked out.

Take it from those of us who watched coach Q here in Denver: he switches goalies all the time and they never get confident.

Well, not having Niemi this year again is gut wrenching. We already lost to him 2 times by one goal. I disagree with your assessment here. Crawford started good, tailed off and Emery had a winning streak. But switching back to Crawford came in the natural rotation of days off. Crawford failed badly and now Emery will get his chance to own it. Coach Q is great. We love him. He can't help it if the defense gives the puck away right in front of the goalies 4 times a game....*more like 5

What??? "He can't help it if the defense gives the puck away right in front of the goalies 4 times a game" He's the coach. What the hell do you mean he can't help it. He is a former d-man himself. He needs to correct this immediately by, wait for it,...COACHING!!!

I'm not willing to give up on Crawdad at all. Look how great he was last year. He was in the top 3 goalies for most of the year and finished 5th or so. Yes he has had an off year (new contracts will do that to you) but the Hawks defense is much worse than last year or the SC year. Plus the Hawks are getting out hit every game. They are soft and now taking too many penalties. Where is Kane? Toews, Hossa and Sharp (sometimes Stalberg) can't do it all. Q needs to toughen up on the players and the closer it gets to the playoffs the tougher he has to get to whip them into playoff shape. DEFENSE is important. Kane get off your #$%$ Superman (sarcasm).

They could put you in that "you had a bad day" ad the NFL does, only the Hockey Version.

So this Sam Fels twit suggests they clamp down the defence in front of Emery and things will turn out? That would mean they've left Crawford out to dry whenever he has played. Cranking up the defence would help BOTH goalies Mr.Obvious

So when are all the Soupy haters going to admit Brian Campbell was a huge part of the squad???Many rejoiced when he was traded...that's just silly. Did ticket prices go down after he was traded? I rewatched the first round of the playoffs vs nucks from 2011 this summer and it seemed clear to me (in at least a few of the games) Brian Campbell was one of the top three skaters on the ice for the bhawks....meaning he could have been one or two at times.

Campoli's turnover did it. But taking the Nuckle-heads to a game 7 after being down 3-0? and losing in OT on a turnover in front of Crawford doesn't make me feel Campbell would have saved us. Campbell and the rest that got axed was a given because of Dale Tallon's spending spree. We couldn't keep everyone.

Bill you are 100% spot on. I'd take a 7 million dollar Campbell over a 6 million Keith anyday. Hawks could have easily held on to him for 1 more year and then moved him, assuming that would have been necessary to keep Sharp. Basically the Hawks got Montador and that 4 million dollar clown Olesz playing in Rockford, what a great trade off there. But most Hawk fans are more interested in out hitting teams, rather than winning games. Bring back the glory days of Behn Wilson and Dave Manson.......idiots!

No one, and I mean NO ONE hated Soupy. Brian Campbell is one of the best D-men in the league. The hate was directed at his contract by morons who didn't understand the situation and reason Tallon offered him that kind of money. People only saw that we were limited in other areas because of the money Soupy was getting as a #3 d-man. But the luxury the Hawks had was having Brian, a #1 or #2 d-man, skating as a #3.

Trade scott frolik bickell and odonnell and get a defensemen or two. End this #$%$

        Amen
      • BrannigansLaw 3 months ago
Bickell, Frolik, Odonnell and Scott have done ZERO in 22 games. We have a few more like that too. #$%$ Kids from the ICE Hogs coming up did more in 6 games than those 4 have all year.
      • anytime_I_can 3 months ago
Sure, Nick. Let's package them up and get Suter & Weber. I'm sure the Preds will take that deal. Stan make it happen.

One of Emery's weaknesses when he was with the Flyers and Senators was his moving from post to post. I think that is still a weakness for him.

This isn't just what the "Quenneville Blackhawks" do, it's what *Quenneville* does. He's done it at every stop in his coaching career, going back to Turek/Johnson in St. Louis. The former Rockie and Whaler defenseman has a bizarre view of goaltenders.

A home game right about now would help, oh wait can't make excuses except when they aren't excuses....schedule makers WITHIN the United Center are still squeezing nickels...

Crawford has been good and bad. So has Emery for that matter. But goaltending is only a small part of the problem. The BIG problem is the Defense. Blocking out opposing forwards, clearing out rebounds from the crease, re-directing passes through the crease. In other words, basic Defense strategy. They have the players. That's not the problem. Though I would like to see Lepisto out there instead of Scott in most situations. The problem is Q's buddy Mike Kitchen, who can't coach a pee wee team. FIRE MIKE KITCHEN and bring in Carlyle to coach the D.

they can try to make their playoffs despite their goaltending. if they can't ride a hot one in the playoffs, they're cooked.

Meh, could do worse than Emery. He's shown he can go deep in the playoffs before

Emery should have never been taken out of the net when he played that six or so game run earlier...! He was playing great, squaring up at the shooter, bouncing back up and going side to side quick and then "Q" lifts him for Crawford...! Crawford looks slow and once he goes down he is like a "fish out of water"...! He did have stretches of good play but these teams watch video and know he has problems once he goes down...! Also, they try getting the puck down low behind the net and he has trouble going side to side and gets out of position...Trouble is, now Emery has a lot of pressure on him because the Hawks 7 points below Wings and 6th in division...!

will be lucky to make it out of the first round with either one of these guys

look at thier save percentages.they both suck.its too bad because with a good goalie they would have a chance.whens the last time someone won a cup with bums in goal like this?
    • Kevin Con  •  3 months ago
Trade him to the Flyers. They're collecting garbage goalies.........
    • David G  •  Sterling Heights, Michigan  •  3 months ago
Disagree with Fels' take on Emery... he can find shots through traffic and has good instincts. But they definitely need a "fire plug" d-man that can push people around down low. Nick Leddy is playing way too big of a role for them right now.
    • Ned  •  3 months ago
Chicago will never win with Emery. The comparison to the Flyers is valid, neither team will win with their goaltending combos. I doubt anybody can beat Boston this year.

Coach Q is a clown. He just can't wait to screw around with things even when they are going good. He was handed a team that couldn't lose and now when it's not so great he's showing his true colors. The sooner he's gone the better.

Coach Quinnvelle ruined many of good goal tenders ...Crawford should still be # 1 ...Emery is just a flash in the PAN ..wait till he crumbles ..Then What ?
