Ray Bourque arrested on DWI charges

Former Boston Bruins defenseman Ray Bourque was arrested Friday night for allegedly driving drunk in Andover, Mass., according to FOX25 Boston.

Police said Bourque was arrested at the scene following a car crash just before midnight. Neither the two people in his car or the three people in the other vehicle were injured.

From the Boston Globe:

Bourque was driving a Mercedes-Benz GL450 through a construction zone on Route 133 at about 11:30 p.m. when it struck the rear of a Toyota Sienna minivan, the statement said.

...

The officer, who was not identified “spoke to the operator of the Mercedes, identified as Bourque,” the statement said. “He determined that Bourque was intoxicated and placed him under arrest.”

The Eagle Tribune reports Bourque was charged with operating under the influence of liquor and following too closely. He's now out on bail and will be arraigned on Monday.

Bourque played for the Bruins from 1979-2000 before he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche where he would win the Stanley Cup in 2001.

UPDATE: Here's a statement Bourque released on Sunday through Celebrity Marketing Inc.:

“For the first time in my life, I find myself in unfamiliar territory. I am not happy about the situation I put myself into on Friday Night. I am a very proud person that accepts the responsibility of my actions and have always accepted being in the media eye. I have used this popularity to try and positively impact as many lives as possible. I am happy that no one was hurt in the accident and thank everyone who has reached out in support of my family and me. Please be patient as I go through this process and respect my family and my privacy.

Thank you all for your understanding.

Sincerely, Ray”
