Rangers trade Wojtek Wolski to Florida Panthers, clearing trade deadline cap space

GettySeveral players hit the waiver wire on Saturday — including Brian Rolston of the New York Islanders, Grant Clitsome of the Columbus Blue Jackets and Darryl Boyce of the Toronto Maple Leafs, who was claimed by the Blue Jackets.

Conspicuously absent from that list: Wojtek Wolski of the Rangers, whose $3.8 million cap hit was seen as an essential deletion from their payroll were the Blueshirts to make a significant move at the NHL Trade Deadline. Say, like, for Rick Nash.

Hours later, we learned why: TSN reports that Wolski's been traded to the Florida Panthers for a 2013 third-round pick and defenseman Mike Vernace, who was signed by the Lightning and then traded to the Panthers this season. He's been toiling in the minors since 2006, and had cups of coffee with the Avalanche and Lightning.

ESPN's Katie Strang explains why Wolski fell out of favor in New York:

The enigmatic forward carries a large cap hit of $3.8 million for a player that has been a consistent scratch under coach John Tortorella. Hampered by injury this season, Wolski has struggled to crack the lineup since returning from sports hernia surgery last month and has played in only three games since January 12.

Florida has lost four straight, scoring five goals in that span.

The traded a sixth-rounder for Nashville Predators veteran Jerred Smithson on Friday, a veteran role player who was caught in a numbers crunch. Now they deal a pick and a spare part for Wolski, who'll be a UFA RFA next summer. (NHL Numbers had him UFA; Cap Geek has him RFA.)

Say this for Wolski: As enigmatic as he can be — the word is usually a cliché for European players, but completely relevant here — he's been traded twice and provided instant offense both times.

In 2010, Colorado sent him to Phoenix for Peter Mueller, and he scored 18 points in 18 games. In 2011, he was traded to the Rangers for Michal Rozsival and had eight points in his first 10 games.

Plus, as Darren Dreger notes, he's aces in the shootout: 4-for-9 in 2010-11, which is something the Panthers can use. If he's not still affected by injuries.

He never impressed me once. He was never skating. Lazy. Not as bad as Zherdev though.

100% lazy. lets hope he likes borscht.

I wouldn't really call wolski a european player I think he moved to toronto when he was 3 or something.

read on rotoworld Mark Spector? came out and said on twitter talks are progressing for nash about an hour ago, same time wolski is dealt. Probably not coincidence I think something is on the verge of happening with nash to rangers. wouldn't be surprised if he's a ranger sometime between now and monday.

possible there is already a deal in place but with rangers playing tonight they won't announce it til tomorrow so they don't lose the players.

This doesnt make sense- if there is a trade in place, the Rangers players involved would be sat for tonight's game so as not to risk injury and anulling the deal.

the rangers might be looking for a trade, maybe dustin brown, but they are definitely not going to get nash

Ranger fan here. Wolski is a good player. He just didn't fit in with our style and what Torts was trying to do; but he was as classy as can be when it came to him being scratched over and over. Wish him the best.

Ranger fan here. Wolski sucked in NY, just like Phoenix and everywhere else he has played. He's a finesse player that can't skate and plays no defense. He will be in in Europe by Christmas next year at the absolute latest.

Wolski is very talented, and he can do well in a non-backchecking offensive system. But, he never fit in the Rangers system. I'm glad to see him and his $3 +million cap hit go.

Yeah, I went to high school with Wolski. You wouldn't even know he was born in Poland if you met him. I guess he's technically European, but shouldn't be described as one.

Work out well for us last night tied the game with a minute left and we won he looked very good and motivated, I think this could be a huge steal

Hey Wysh, just so you know, Nash is on pace for 56 points this year. If he stays healthy and plays the rest of the game (which he won't). Why is it so hard for you to understand that no GM in his right mind is going to give up anything to take a guy with those numbers at $7.8 million for the next 7 years?

while i agree, somewhat, nash will get all the fools drooling, simply on reputation and the good player that he WAS for a few seasons. over-rated? hell yes. overpaid? hell yes. untradable? hell no?

You don't watch the Columbus Blue Jackets much, do you?
      • SHAE 2 months ago
umm, me? if so, enough to know that nash is good, but NOWHERE near that good. not sure he ever was, but IF he was, it was cira 2008. he is way overpaid and over-rated. not in the top 10 forwards in the nhl. not sure he makes top 20. again, way the fu%% overrated.

Nash isn't worth the players rumored to be going for him or the cap hit we would take. Unless they can work out a better deal, the Rangers shouldn't pull the trigger.

He isn't much for the grind game, which is unfortunate given the Rangers are a grinding team. If your name isn't Gaborik or Richards, you have to grind it out. Wolski doesn't grind, therefore he doesn't fit. He's a sniper, for sure, and Florida was looking for a goal-scorer. They paid a small price for him, so when he disappears in the playoffs it shouldn't be a shocker.

        "i know my hockey"
        "cant miss prospect"

        Diametrically opposed.
      • chuck 2 months ago
We"ll give you Gomez for a 32nd round peewee pick.
      • Josh V 2 months ago
There's a difference between 'heart and soul' players and 'core' players, and I'm not at all convinced that Dubinsky has ever been one of the latter.

And, if this deal gets done, I don't think Krieder will be in it. Erixon, maybe.

@Diehardnuck - glad you said something. I'd have made a 'diehard rangers fan' 'know my hockey' joke, which would have been funnier to my fellow Flyers fans but much less accurate.

too bad the Panthers didn't make the move for Wolski earlier, they could have a lot more points because his abilities in shootouts, if they miss the playoffs it'll be cause the losses in OT and mostly SO
    • Dave W  •  2 months ago
Wow, we got more than I thought we would for Wolski.

Is Rick Nash interested in being a Broadway shining star with The New York Rangers?
Instead The Rangers ought to try and get a Power Play player who can bring the puck and shoot at the net instead of this silly recycling without scoring !!

After being down 2-0 he scored the game-tying goal late in the 3rd for the Cats tonight, allowing them to win in a SO. I say great pick-up for FLA!
    • BFarva  •  2 months ago
Real shame. Great package of talent & size and barely 26 but already with his 4th NHL team. Really hope he gets it together before it's too late.

Katie Strang is an idiot. The Rangers already had plenty of cap space. But we already knew both of these things.
