Puck Headlines: Rick Nash chatter; Jagr turns 40; Ovechkin too much of a rock star?

Crazy eyes: you get 'em when you're forty

    • Jaromir Jagr turns 40 today. [NHL]

    • Speaking of ancient relics, a look back at historic Windsor Arena, which is closing its doors after 87 years. [NY Times]

    • Olaf Kolzig thinks Alex Ovechkin may be "wrapped up too much in the rock star status that comes with being Alex Ovechkin." Rock star, huh? Silly Ollie. Ovie's a rap star. [Washington Post]

    • Should a team trade the farm for Rick Nash? It's complicated. [Five Minutes For Fighting]

    • For Canuck fans salivating over a Rick Nash trade: it might make more sense for Columbus than for Vancouver. [The Cannon]

    • Al MacInnis becomes the first player to be honoured by the Calgary Flames' "Forever a Flame" program, which lifts numbers to the rafters and then, uh, keeps them in circulation. In other news, my wife has rejected a similar program for our marriage. [The Globe & Mail]

    • Two teens in the Boston area have started "Hearts 4 Hockey", a campaign to raise money so that every hockey rink in Massachusetts can have a defibrillator. [WHDH]

    • In less inspiring Boston-based news, if you're wondering why Brad Marchand wasn't featured in the Boston Bruins' championship DVD, it's because he was too drunk to be interviewed. Heart of a champion right there. [ESPN]

    • Michael Traikos gets sensitive about Phil Kessel being named the league's easiest player to intimidate: "You get the feeling that the only reason Sports Illustrated or anyone else conducts anonymous polls of hockey players these days is a way to poke fun at the Toronto Maple Leafs." [National Post]

    • The University of Wisconsin Badgers are reaching out to families with food allergies, promising a 100-percent allergen-free environment and tickets for $3 for allergy sufferers. Expect a nerdy crowd. [Badgers]

    • On Gilbert Brule resurrecting his career in Phoenix. [Edmonton Journal]

    • A year after suffering a potentially career-ending skate cut to his left knee, San Jose Sharks' goaltending prospect Alex Stalock has worked his way back to the Worcester Sharks. Good stuff here. [Mercury News]

    • Jimmy Howard will return for the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday, giving a much-needed boost to a team that's been struggling. What's that? Wait, how many games in a row? Holy heck. [Detroit Free Press]

    • The Minnesota Wild are one player away from tying their franchise record for most players used in a season so, you know, there's that. [PHT]

    • If the Chicago Blackhawks need inspiration, they should look to the Vancouver Canucks. [PITB]

    • Steve Tambellini still has a job somehow. [Backhand Shelf]

    • Why the Dallas Stars might be after Jeff Carter. [Defending Big D]

    • And finally, let Benstonium.com's Clint Eastwood/Pittsburgh Penguins mashup inspire you to win the Stanley Cup or buy a Chrysler or whatever:

Great story about the kids helping out getting defibrillators in their local arenas. Can only hope they succeed and help others take notice how important having one around is.

Fantastic story on the Barn, I never would have thought the NY Times would have written that. Cheers to them though.

Marchand was just training for a spot on the Red Sox starting rotation.

I'm a Red Sox fan, but I'll thumb you up for that. Well played.

The old barn in Windsor was everything you could want in a Junior hockey rink. You could sit right on top of the action, and fans were knowledgeable and funny with their chirps. W as privileged to see many future NHLers and even got in when the Lindros and later Jovanonski circuses pulled into town, but Adam Graves Spits, in their nasty Brown and Orange colored sweaters, were an awesome team that was fun to watch.
When Wings games started to be overly populated with ornamental hockey simpletons and tickets became scarce, Windsor Arena was a step back to a simpler time, and a refuge for this young hockey fan. RIP, ol girl.

Appreciate the SJ love, but I think you linked to the same Alex Stalock article two days in a row.

Re: Brad Marchand being too drunk

Pfft, get back to me when he's living under a bridge. Then we'll talk.
      • Mustache of Kes 3 months ago
Being "too drunk" is a relative term. For instance, what might be considered "utterly wasted" for regular folk, is only considered to be "mildly buzzed" in MA.

Or - while flipping a car & lighting it on fire might be considered "rioting" in other parts of the world, in Vancouver it's considered "showing appreciation for the team".

See - I insulted both fan bases this time. Happy?

You read WAY too much into that. I was making a joke about a player from a bygone era.
      • Mustache of Kes 3 months ago
I really read nothing into it - was merely engaging in smart @ssery.

Who is this player you reference? Does he live under the Tim Thomas bridge?

      It's Olie, with one L, pronounced OH-lee.

Other than that, yeah, the story is pretty much on the mark.

Unfortunately, I have to agree also. I like rock star Ovi, but not if it comes at the expense of hockey star Ovi.

Trust me I'm a Caps fan since going back to the 70s and Ovechkin when he first started was the greatest thing for DC hockey. But lately it just seems like he's not giving it his best effort. Stepping down as Captain might be what he needs.

Somehow the NYR's have to have a complete first line in order to take the game to the finals. Don't know if Nash is the answer but something has to give.

whats even more surprising than Jagr turning 40 is that he's going to retire a Flyer

Mooney I generally like your posts but leave promoting stereotypes to others. Nerdy crowd b/c of food allergies.... If only you had to suffer for one day what others face day in day out... I just lost a lot of respect in your search for a cheap laugh.

"On Gilbert Brule resurrecting his career in Phoenix." Oh gee, the only thing memorable that happened in his career was when he picked up that d-bag Bono. He never did anything to endear himself to Oilers fans, NOTHING!!!

So, when does Hakan Loob get his number up in that Forever A Flame section? He's going to have to wait and go in with that mooch who's wearing his number now, is he?

"The University of Wisconsin Badgers are reaching out to families with good allergies, promising a 100 per cent allergen-free environment and tickets for $3 for allergy sufferers. Expect a nerdy crowd"

      There are no "good" allergies.

About 8% of children under the age of 18 suffer from food allergies in the US, and almost 40% of those kids have severe reactions to their allergens that could cause hospitalization or death. That's 2 million kids. Not really something to joke about.

Rock star status? More like Jagoff status.
