Phil Kessel’s NHL peers find him easy to intimidate, according to survey

    Getty Images

The Sports Illustrated NHL Players Poll continues to supply contentious little factoids, and again it's at the expense of a Toronto Maple Leafs player.

Please recall defenseman Dion Phaneuf leading his peers by a wide margin on the list of the NHL's most overrated players. The latest question answered anonymously by 145 NHL players: Which All-Star-caliber player is the easiest to intimidate?

    The top responses:

Phil Kessel, Toronto Maple Leafs RW 15%
The Sedin Twins, Vancouver Canucks F's 8%
Alexander Semin, Washington Capitals LW 7%
Patrick Kane, Chicago Blackhawks C 3%
Ilya Kovalchuk, New Jersey Devils LW 3%

It's a pretty damning question, perhaps even more so than being "overrated." This is essentially "who is the softest" or "who is the most weak-willed" player in the NHL today. (To that latter point, Roberto Luongo received votes as well.)

For Kessel, some of this could be perception — buoyed by performances like his 1 assist in four games against the Boston Bruins this season, skating to a minus-7. But some of it comes from relevant experience in playing against him. He carried this "soft" label with him from the Bruins to the Leafs. He hasn't shaken it.

With regard to the Sedins at No. 2, SI writes:

Identical twins Daniel and Henrik Sedin of the Canucks received votes as a pair as well as individually: Alone, Henrik finished tied for sixth in the voting (3%) and Daniel tied for 17th (1%).

Wonder what that discrepancy is about. Is it because Daniel's the goal scorer? Or because he could take a punch?

Semin hitting this list isn't a surprise.

Kane's a little surprising, although he takes his share of physical punishment during the game. He's not a gritty player; maybe the complaint from his peers is that he needs to find that element.

We'll assume this poll was answered before Kovalchuk got his Gordie on, and that the lingering effects of Sean Avery's tormenting of the Russian contributed to it.

Which All-Star types should have made this list that didn't?

I'm sure in the not so distant past #99 wasn't one to drop the gloves or throw big hits. He also avoided the big hits..........So whats the bloddy problem with the Kessel bashing. I'm not a leafs fan but damn, leave this guy alone. So what he is shy and don't wanna be crushed by goons in the corners......he still puts up points....in fact, theres about 800+ players playing in the NHL that have less points then him...and only 3 that has more....everyone just drop it. it really shows immaturity the need to pick on Phil.

This wasnt a toughness survey, it was about intimadation - ie the way Kessel plays vs Boston, his old stomping ground, or composes himself in front of a microphone.

So 1. dont every compare Wayno to Phil Kessel again, and 2. Wayne won 4 SCs, holds 61 records, and was top scorer of countless playoff runs and scored HUGE goals, including the Kings run to the SC final. I doubt he was very intimidated on the big stage.

Jethro was just making a point. He didn't compare him to Grets he just made a statement.By the way ...you spelled intimidation wrong.Just making a point. You spelled it right in the last sentence though.LIKE A BOSS is not intimidating.
      • Jethro 3 months ago
My point is Kessel is 4th in the league in scoring.....in Mid Feb. Now as far as I know, thats a quality player who if were intimidated that much, would be at a far less point total. This stupid "Could have gotten Seguin" fiasco will forever be a haunting on Kessel and It had nothing to do with him...it was the Leafs decision.

Kane wouldn't be intimidated by a team of cab drivers though.

That's so old. It isn't even funny now

i will always laugh at the thought if a millionaire robbing a cab driver of 12 dollars and how pathetic it is. 20 years from now it will still be funny

Ryan - if you are going to spout off, get your facts straight already!

        It was 20 cents!

lets remember that sports journalists are just one step above entertainment tonight and e-talk daily journalists... so you cant put too much weight in what they say.

These are players that voted in a pole, not a sports writers opinion.

Four straight 30-goal seasons, yeah Kessel's obviously terrified of playing hockey.
      • Jackal Va 3 months ago
30 goals, almost no blocked shots, no hits. Players like this will not win you anything. Their highest use is trade bait to a losing team for a gritty player. As a non Leafer it's good to know Burke doesn't realize this.
      • big C 3 months ago
Pat Kane doesn't block, doesn't hit, and he won a Cup not long ago.
      • Matthew Smith 3 months ago
Why would you want a top line player blocking shots and risk injury?
    • G Simmons  •  Welland, Canada  •  3 months ago
Why would anyone even write an article about this? This is not even readable.I am sure there are more interesting things to write about.I am sure not all NHL players feel this way about Kessel.
      • me 3 months ago
obviously it isnt 'readable' to you. it said it was a poll of 145 players.

What are they doing to Kessel? Putting him in social situations?
    • Ludd 9.0  •  3 months ago
If Kessel is the easiest player to intimidate then the rest of the players in the NHL must not be working too hard to intimidate him this year.

I thought about our Sabres but we don't have any all stars.Otherwise the whole team would qualify
    • James  •  Barrie, Canada  •  3 months ago
So much wrong with a survay like this that only a bushleague reporter would even coment on it.

Ironically enough ALL these players are drafted with very high picks in the entry draft. Aside from the rare hard nosed defenseman there really isn't a history in recent years of an intimidating player coming out of the first 5 picks. These are ridiculous questions that are being asked of players. If they want to open their mouth, make them accountable for it and publish who is saying what. Then we'll see whether this nonsense is warranted. How many would be willing to back up what they say? I'd bet not too many.

Sports Illustrated is a joke. Their writers and consistently clueless about all sports, especially hockey. This is the "People Magazine" of sports. Real sports fans don't take what they say seriously. If it were not for the annual "swimsuit issue" this magazine would be ignored by all.

This poll crap may be somewhat accurate, but what is the point? The NHL has so many story lines and is probably the most competative professional team sport in the world. Yet these morons still choose to write all this "reality tv" or "Jersy Shore" type of #$%$ Please do not treat the NHL and its players like the garbage those reailty shows feature!
    • gerard  •  Cloquet, Minnesota  •  3 months ago
you could put the whole minnesota wild team on that list. old ladies in wal-mart check harder and fight better on blizt day then the wild do,
    • nooc  •  3 months ago
Hm. Kessel, Sedin, Sedin, and Kovalchuk are all averaging over a point a game. They don't seem all that intimidated to me.
    • whocares  •  Wallingford, Connecticut  •  3 months ago
ya he's 3rd in the league for goal scoring....i guess he would be 1st if he wasn't so easy to intimidate! lol
    • canuk  •  3 months ago
Montreal fan here-give me Kessel i'll take him
    • O.D.F.  •  3 months ago
as far as I'm concerned they can keep on intimidating Phil Kessel as long as he stays in the top 5 in scoring...lol!!!!
    • J  •  3 months ago
I saw Phil Kessel laughing all the way to his bank after reading SI's article.
    • The Chipper  •  3 months ago
Hmmmm truculence??? Funny that Burkie was responsible for bringing the 3 players that top this list to his various teams.
