Pass or Fail: Washington Capitals’ bold 2015 Winter Classic jerseys

The NHL held a press conference Tuesday afternoon promoting the 2015 Winter Classic between the Chicago Blackhawks and Washington Capitals at Nationals Park. The EPIX reality series that will air in December was also officially revealed, with fans able to watch a live stream of the show on NHL.com if they don’t have the channel on their cable subscription.

The bigger news coming from the presser was the unveiling of the Capitals’ jersey they’ll wear on Jan. 1. (The Blackhawks will reveal theirs at a later date.)

After wearing their vintage red, white, and blue looks against the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2011, Washington will don a bold look for this game.

The 2015 Capitals NHL Winter Classic jersey includes many elements from Capitals jerseys worn during the past five decades. The “Capitals” wordmark on the front of the jersey has been a hallmark of Caps jerseys throughout the past four decades, even through several redesigns. The stars on the front are also an element seen on many Capitals jerseys through the years, including the Capitals current jersey.

The primary color for the Capitals’ NHL Winter Classic uniform is vintage deep red to symbolize hockey’s deep roots in Washington. The stripes on the shoulders, waist and legs bring in elements of Washington professional hockey jerseys from the 1930’s, predating the Capitals’ formation in the 1970s. A large “W” on the front of the jersey, offset in blue to contrast the white Capitals wordmark, offers a unique look never seen before on Capitals jerseys. It’s stripey, sure, but I love it. (“Oh, that’s stupid,” said Wysh)

We need less black jerseys and more with other colors in the NHL. The mix of the red and navy blue will look great on the outdoor rink, and the scheme keeps with the Capitals' "Rock the Red" marketing campaign they've had for several years. The little Easter egg of the Washington Monument within the "W" on the front of the jersey and alternate captain's "A" is a nice touch as well.
