Vote for Rory ... Save the Coyotes ... Hockey Scores. In the time-honored tradition of hockey fan movements comes an Internet petition to get the Toronto Maple Leafs to change their logo and jersey permanently to the style they've displayed as alternates (below left).
The man behind the LeafsLogo.com is Jeff Veillette. He feels that while the other 'Original Six' teams have maintained tradition and made minor changes to their look over the years, the Leafs altered things by changing to their current look and the only way to return to the glory days is with a new logo.
Changes to a team's uniform take a year's notice, so Veilette's aim is the 2010-11 season; one that he hopes, if Toronto General Manager Brian Burke's overhaul stays the course, would coincide with a year of actual competitive hockey for the team.
Coming up, Puck Daddy had a couple of questions for Veillette about how much he'll see the movement through, appeasing the Hockey Gods and celebrity spokespeople. But first, we put it to the readership:
Pass or Fail: The Maple Leafs should switch their logo to the alternate.
Here's Veillette, a.k.a. YouTube workhorse "Jeffler," on his latest campaign:
Q. Are you prepared to hold rallies, bring signs to Air Canada Centre, and go all out in your quest to have the Toronto Maple Leafs change their logo?
VEILLETTE: If the support is there for rallies or any kind of offline grassroots effort, then I'm sure I could figure something out or set something up, absolutely. I'm pretty much down for anything to help the cause except personally doing the ACC signs. Unless you want to pay for my tickets, Leafs games are pricey for anyone, let alone an unemployed teenager.
Do you believe if the logo is changed that the Hockey Gods will once again smile upon the Leafs, since they would be closing the door on the Harold Ballard era?
Though obviously the team itself would have to be competitive as well, I could definitely see some hockey god help coming our way. The Ballard era has to end, and this is the final major step that isn't telling fans to bang their heads against a wall until they forget it existed.
If momentum fails to grow, are you prepared to begin Photoshopping celebrities wearing the requested sweater in support?
Prepared to begin? I suppose I should delete what I already have? Seriously though, if it must happen, it shall, even though momentum has been actually growing quite well in the past few days.
Thanks, sir. So, once again, the question at hand:
Pass or Fail: The Maple Leafs should switch their logo.
