NHL Trade Deadline Dream Scenarios: Whom do you want to go where?

    Getty Images

The NHL trade deadline is where logic and fantasy "meet-cute", date for a while and then have a teary-eyed breakup while an Adele song plays on the car stereo.

They can't coexist in the same relationship. What we fantasize about, and foolhardily tricky ourselves into believing  is plausible, gets crushed by the weight of no-trade clauses, salary cap considerations and the personal politics of general managers. (Don't hold your breath for that next Vancouver/Boston trade, ladies and germs.)

But for the next two weeks, we can dream. About the last pieces of a championship puzzle or reunions we want to see happen before retirement. About deals that even the most liberal computer arbitrator on an EA Sports game would reject.

Here are a few NHL Trade Deadline 2012 Dream Scenarios, some of which can happen and all of which we wish would.

What are your Dream Scenarios for the NHL trade deadline?

Teemu Selanne Joins The Detroit Red Wings

The Anaheim Ducks are on an incredible roll. A preposterous roll. A roll that Bruce Boudreau would be intimidated to eat. Yet they only have a 3.8-percent chance at qualifying for the playoffs, and a loss here or there before the deadline could bring that even lower.

Selanne hasn't been thinking about "other options" during the Ducks' resurgence, but it's going to have to happen at some point. If he does decide to move, the Winnipeg Jets are the obvious, nostalgic, storybook choice … and yet one that has about a great a shot at winning the Stanley Cup as the Sacramento Kings.

If you want to see Teemu hoist Stanley like it's a ceramic pig, then the options are limited. Maybe the Rangers? Maybe back to the Sharks? Or, maybe, skating with best buddy Valtteri Filppula and the Detroit Red Wings at the top of the conference.

Oh yes. That last one would be fun.

Selanne, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen and Lidstrom on the same power play droooooool.

For most fans, seeing Selanne as a Red Wing will be blasphemy. But what if that leads to Selanne and Lidstrom posing with the Stanley Cup, eh?

    As for the Jets …

Shane Doan Joins The Winnipeg Jets

If Shane Doan were to leave the Phoenix Coyotes, it would be a "canary in a coal mine" moment about that franchise's future. They're in the eight seed, there's no reason to move Doan now … but if they did, wouldn't Winnipeg be perfect?

He was drafted by the Jets, played one season before relocation, and would return as the sort of veteran scorer that roster needs.

Plus, an ex-Jet wearing Jets 2.0 gear might actually cause a rip in the space/time continuum.

Ray Whitney Joins The San Jose Sharks

Not to pick the bones of the Coyotes, but Whitney returning to (a) the team that drafted him and (b) that he played for from 1992-97 and (c) that needs a veteran scorer of his ilk is hockey symmetry on Doan/Jets levels.

One of the most unlikely 1,000 point scorers in NHL history, trying to help the San Jose Sharks do the improbable — winning the Stanley Cup.

Evgeni Nabokov Joins The Chicago Blackhawks

Sitting six points off the eight seed and getting strong goaltending, the New York Islanders may not part with Nabby despite all the reasons to sell high. If he was portable … well, what better destination than the Windy City, where the current Blackhawks goaltenders couldn't stop a drain let alone an entire net?

Drop Emery, put Nabokov into a competition with Corey Crawford, and then gleefully wait until the Hawks and the Sharks meet in the postseason that that Carnival of Awkward Reunions.

Ryan Smyth Joins The New York Rangers

A reunion with Glen Sather in Manhattan was looking likely a few weeks back, but not so much now, as Smyth wants a new deal with the Oilers and they won't ask him to waive his NTC.

Wait … contract talks with Ryan Smyth leading up to the trade deadline?

Welcome back to New York, Captain Canada!

Smyth would be the perfect rental for the New York Rangers: The same kind of blue-collar approach as the rest of the roster, with a dash of veteran leadership and savvy. Plus, their power play stinks and Smyth is at his best collecting garbage with the man advantage. Hey Brad Richards and John Tortorella: Remember how valuable Dave Andreychuk was to the 2004 Lightning …

Plus, watching Rental Ryan Smyth make the Stanley Cup Final with the Rangers would be oh-so-pleasant for Islanders fans, we're sure.

Hal Gill Joins The Pittsburgh Penguins

The U.S.S. Hal Gill is going to sail somewhere at the trade deadline from his current port 'o call in Montreal. He'll be heavily coveted as one of the top defensive defensemen available with championship experience (and who enters beast mode in the playoffs).

Why a reunion with the Penguins? Because for all the carping, moaning, critiquing and kvetching about the performance of flighty, ineffective, overpaid Paul Martin, everything Hal Gill gives you is the antithesis. It would be a soul-cleansing experience to have him back on the Penguins' blue line.

Rick Nash Joins The Vancouver Canucks

Before we get into why this would be simply wonderful, we yield the floor to Elliotte Friedman to explain why it won't happen:

Look at Vancouver. On the surface, the Canucks are a perfect match. Nash is the kind of player Vancouver would consider trading Cory Schneider for. Add Cody Hodgson, Chris Tanev, maybe another piece and voila, you've got what looks like a pretty fair trade.

Don't think it's going to happen. The Canucks are full of guys who've taken less money -- Kevin Bieksa, Alex Burrows, Ryan Kesler. Heck, the Sedins probably left about $15 million each on the table. It is the organization's philosophy to reward their own, with newcomers like Dan Hamhuis understanding they will not break the bank.

All of this is true. Which naturally makes Nash-to-the-Canucks the greatest thing to hit Vancouver since fire-retardant storefronts.

The idea that Nash would immediately become the team's highest-paid player is delicious. The idea that it would cost them Cory Schneider (in theory), leaving Roberto Luongo to play in (GASP!) tough postseason road games is delicious. The idea that, without Schneider, using the post-CBA amnesty clause on Luongo probably goes out the window … also delicious. The fact that Nash will never, ever live up to the imaginary statistic standards of his salary … delicious catnip for the Vancouver media.

Look, it's not all strife. Nash on a power play with the Sedins could be sick. Nash being a part of a championship-caliber team rather than having to shoulder the load would be a positive thing for his career. Also, the Canucks have never had a No. 61. So that's nice.

For all of these reasons, the Vancouver Canucks getting Rick Nash would be aces for hockey fans.

Or, at the very least, if the Vancouver Canucks were the only other team in the mix when the Blue Jackets trade Nash to Boston, and then had to swallow the bitter pill of watching him dance shirtless with Marchand at another Cup celebration night.

Pens need to trade Martin for no other reason then to get rid of his 5M so they have money to give James Neal. They have a solid D core barring injury right now with some very good prospects, they do not need him or Gill.
      • Ross 3 months ago
dont people understand theres gunna be PLENTY of money to sign neal? the guy makes 2.875 mil a year already and the penguins have free agents in Sullivan (1.5 mil), Asham (775,000), Park (550,000), O'Reilly (525,000), Niskanen (1.5 mil), and Brent Johnson (600,000) that are easily replaceable and if dropped can free up clearly enough room for the 4-5 mil a year Neal deserves. remember $2,492,432 in cap space is available to the penguins right now as it is. and tack on the additional cap space that is gunna become available when the salary cap increases after this year. so everyone quit their whining that Neal has played his way out of pittsburgh, cause shero would never let a 30 goal scorer thats only 24 years old walk after 1 full season. he'll lock him up long term with a hometown discount
      • Patrick 3 months ago
come on now, you're talking about dropping half of the team to keep one guy. Johnson is a good backup asham is a good defensive forward and tough as nails, Niskanen is a good offensive defenceman. just because someone is hurt or in a two or three game slump doesn't mean that we should get rid of them. by you reasoning, let's drop crosby for that 8mil/year, #$%$ has he done this year... but no, that's just foolishness.Admitted, Harp is right, I think we can do without Paul martin and hiis 5mil/year especially if we're getting Gil
      • N8 3 months ago
Sullivan+Asham+Neals=5.15 mill thats enough to sign him. You have McDonald, Tangradi(if not traded), and Jason Williams that can be brought up for league minimum. No need to trade a guy who making about the same amount of money as the defensemen around him. Plus the safety cone with a RC car underneath it doesn't really fit into the Pens system anymore.

As a Canuck fan I hope they stay as far away from Rick Nash as they possibly can. Even if all it took were Tanev to get him I wouldn't do it.

His cap hit is ridiculous for the numbers he puts up. Yeah I know he's on a lame team....whatever.....He doesn't deserve anywhere near Sedin money let a lone what he does make. It would cause problems in the nucks locker room.

With a little patience Booth could easily develop into an 80 point guy and is already showing he can be the power forward the canucks needed.

This trade would just be a waste of young assets for a team that is starting to get older. We need to try to keep Cory, Cody, Tanev etc...not trade them for some over rated "superstar" who won't add much more than making the already best power play in the league just a little better.

How about Selanne to the Jets along with Doan? Wouldn't that be a nice dream scenario for their fans?
    • Bonzopookie  •  Boston, Massachusetts  •  3 months ago
another pointless article from yahoo news and puck doody. It would be great for HOCKEY FANS if Rick Nash is dealt to the Canucks??? Maybe for Vancouver fans. How about long-suffering Blue Jackets fans? I know it is impossible for arrogant snobs to understand that losing teams have loyal fanbases too. I am not suggesting I am adverse to the team moving Nash if the right deal was made, but why should the Jackets ask for MORE prospects? Why should they pull a trigger on a goaltender, when they don't have much of a defense in front of the goaltender? Why is every media outlet and Canadien fan so hell-bent on suggesting that the Columbus market is impatient and needs to makes moves now? Hell, i have already waited 11 years, what is another 1 or 2 years at this point? Memo to stupid Scott Howson: DON'T PANIC. DON'T SELL THE FARM. And please don't trade for Grant Tarnstrom. The original 6 markets will survive if they don't get their precious commodities at the deadline. And yes, Greg...despite your know-it-all, good-for-hockey mentality, there ARE fans of the Columbus Blue Jackets out here. We do care
      • Bonzopookie 3 months ago
and before anyone goes technical on me: I know Vancouver isn't original 6. My point is designed to take aim at the "designated important" markets, courtesy of TSN and yahoo...and the others. God forbid, people from Nashville, Columbus and Tampa like hockey...
      • Nick S. 3 months ago
Amen brother. I agree with you 100 percent. I thought hockey had the best fans. But, Im starting to see most hockey fans are arrogant spoiled brats. We're not allowed to like hockey because we don't A) live in Canada, or B) don't live in a typical hockey-based US state, i.e. Michigan, Minnesota, Massachusetts. I am a huge Jackets fan, but wherever Rick Nash goes I will follow.

If anyone needs to be dealt from CBJ, it's Jeff Carter, Steve Mason, and Scott Howson. Columbus needs to quit filling 2/3's of their roster with players who should be in the AHL. Like you said the Jackets' Defense SUCKS! Only three D's were mentioning are Wisniewski, Tyutin, and Methot.
      • The Chipper 3 months ago
First, it's called paying your dues. Those markets have to prove it. Second, it was reported through back channels that Nash is sick of the situation in Columbus so wants out. Third, hockey is a religion in Canada and the media is a business so are just catering to the market. Sorry you had your feelings hurt.

Selanne to the Wings would be awesome for both him and Detroit. Wings haters would hate it, but the puck possession play of the Wings, along with the other high skill players, would be a perfect fit.
A more likely trade would be Gill to Detroit. The Wings are in the market for a vet stay at home 3rd pair d-man who can block shots, clear the net, and play on the PK. Gill would be perfect for that role.
    • JM  •  Phoenix, Arizona  •  3 months ago
Doan has been pretty public with criticism of his time in Winnipeg, and he's spent his entire career with the Jets/Coyotes franchise. He has been crucial in attempts to salvage the Coyotes in the greater Phoenix area, and a trade, as you indicate, would likely be more omen than anything. If he's traded by the Coyotes, I doubt it's too Winnipeg. That said, unless Doan wants out, which I don't think is the case, why would a suddenly resurgent Coyotes, desperate to add fans in an already torn fanbase trade the face of its franchise/fandom? Don't see it.
    • Kevin  •  East Amherst, New York  •  3 months ago
Ironic enough, all the players listed would fit perfectly where they'd go.

It would be weird seeing Ray Whitney in a newer Sharks jersey, though.

nash would do fine once hes stripped of the "C". he doesnt handle the leader roll well at all. I
wouldnt mind seeing selanne wear a winged wheel for the remainder of the season, the wings could use a guy like him, also tell the blackhawks the wings have a goalie for them, ty conklin, will trade you kane for him!!
    • Brian L  •  Snyder, Texas  •  3 months ago
To address some of the conversation below Regarding Nash to Wings, and the Columbus scouts being at the Griffins games. I don't see how it could happen.

I would LOVE to see it happen, but how could the Jackets expect fans to watch their former franchise wearing the Winged Wheel? It would be like the Wings trading Datsyuk to the Blackhawks!

It's a nice fantasy, as long as we don't give up a roster player other than maybe Hudler. I don't even want to see Eaves, Miller, or Abby go, and especially not Helm. Those guys are the best depth guys in the NHL, considering what they get paid.

Nice Dream becomes a Reality when the Predators Trade...FOR NOTHING ! A long time ago, in a galaxy, far, far away, the Nashville Predators traded for Peter Foresberg
    • Matt  •  3 months ago
Nash to Vancouver won't happen because of the price. Columbus would expect Schneider and Hodgson + at least 2 more prospects and a 1st pick. The Canucks would not be willing to give up both Schneider and Hodgson. Their offer would look something like "Schneider, Raymond, Tanev or Conaughton + 1st round pick. I don' see Columbus taking that

Even then, I don't think it fits under the cap. It would next season if Salo retires though. Maybe an offseason trade?

Schneider, Tanev, and Hodgson for Nash. WTH? A top notch prospect at goaltender, defense, and center in exchange for a hefty salary and a player already past his prime.

      That makes no sense whatsoever.
