No. 1 Star: Jhonas Enroth, Buffalo Sabres
Ryan Miller was scheduled to get the start tonight against the San Jose Sharks, and well, we all know what (FINALLY) happened. On very short notice, Enroth seized his opportunity to audition for the top goaltending spot before Jaroslav Halak even arrived. Buffalo beat the Sharks 4-2 thanks to Enroth's 36 save performance, which includes this beauty on Patrick Marleau.
No. 2 Star: Semyon Varlamov, Colorado Avalanche
In his first game back after the Olympic break, Varlamov posted 40 saves in the Avs 4-2 win against Phoenix. Somehow he denied the Coyotes their third goal on this save:
No. 3 Star: Darcy Kuemper, Minnesota Wild
The rookie goaltender held the Canucks to only one goal and was perfect in the shootout that went seven rounds. Justin Fontaine sent the shootout winner past Eddie Lack in his first ever shootout attempt. The Wild win their fourth straight 2-1 (SO).
Honorable mention: Congrats to Jeff Tyni (St. Louis) and Ryan Vinz (Buffalo) on making their NHL debuts as emergency backup goalies due to the big trade of today. Tyni currently works as a locker room attendant for the Ducks, and Vinz is the director of technology for Buffalo's HarborCenter ... Watch Zemgus Girgensons win a faceoff, pass it through his legs to Brian Flynn for the wicked wristah (Boston accent):
... Ryan Kesler MAD! He does not like the trade talk so he took out his aggressions on the Wild while the Canucks were short-handed:
... Anaheim beat St. Louis 1-0 on a goal by Andrew Cogliano; Jonas Hiller earned his fifth shutout, tying him with Tuukka Rask for the most in the NHL.
Did you know? Bruce Boudreau is the fastest coach in NHL history to reach the 300 win plateau. Per Boudreau, "After my 200th, I got fired the next game". Oh Gabby! You so cray-cray.
Dishonorable mention: Boo NHL! The league put the kibosh on St. Louis using regular emergency goaltender Rob Laurie as a backup to Brian Elliot ... Anaheim's Matthieu Perreault left the game early in the third period and did not return due to an upper-body injury ... the Blues are 1-8-0 against California teams.
