NHL Three Stars: Steen and Oshie lead Blues in Capital beating
No. 1 Star: Alexander Steen, St. Louis Blues
Won the battle of the two ‘Alex’ stars, with two goals and one assist in the Blues’ 4-3 win over Alex Ovechkin’s Capitals. The win for the Blues kept them two points back of the Nashville Predators for first place in the Central Division.
No. 2. Star: T.J. Oshie, St. Louis Blues
Notched three assists in the Blues victory over the Capitals. Oshie has now picked up points in five straight games. During that stretch he has eight points total.
No. 3 Star: Carter Hutton, Nashville Predators
Stopped all 21 Pittsburgh Penguins shots on goal to pick up his first shutout of the season in the Predators’ 4-0 win over Pittsburgh. The win by Hutton moved him to 3-1-2 since Nashville starter Pekka Rinne went down with a knee injury on Jan. 13.
Honorable Mention: Minnesota’s Devan Dubnyk stopped 35 of 37 Vancouver shots on goal in a win over the Canucks … Wild forward Thomas Vanek scored his first game-winner with the Wild this season… Nashville’s Roman Josi scored a goal and added an assist … Preds forward Filip Forsberg picked up two assists … Washington’s Alex Ovechkin scored two goals and added an assist in a loss to St. Louis … Caps forward Nicklas Backstrom picked up two assists … Blues forward Vladimir Tarasenko scored a goal and added an assist … Coyotes forward Lauri Korpikoski scored two goals in Arizona’s win over Montreal … Canadiens forward Alex Galchenyuk scored two goals … Arizona’s Louis Domingue picked up his first NHL win of his career with 18 saves on 20 Habs shots on goal.
Did You Know?: Ovechkin is one of five players to score 30 goals in each of his first 10 seasons. The others are Mike Gartner, Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri and Mike Bossy.
Dishonorable Mention: Vancouver defenseman Alex Edler was a minus-2, as were teammates Nick Bonino and Chris Higgins … Pittsburgh’s Marc-Andre Fleury allowed four goals on 24 Predators shots on goal … Penguins defenseman Simon Despres was a minus-2 … The Penguins have been shut out five times this year. The Caps have won one of their last eight games.
