In absurd call, Sabres granted penalty shot after Islanders’ Streit stumbles into goal (Video)

Here's a very rare occurrence: a penalty shot awarded during a play that features no scoring chance whatsoever.

With a minute and a half to go in Saturday night's game between the New York Islanders and the Buffalo Sabres, and with the Islanders leading 3-2, Sabres' winger Thomas Vanek took the puck behind the Islanders goal. Islanders' captain Mark Streit went after him, but caught an edge on his way below the goal line and ran into the post, knocking the net off.

And referee Eric Furlatt, who was standing, like, right there, somehow saw this honest mistake as an intentional dislodging of the goal and awarded the Sabres a penalty shot.

Thankfully, because there is some justice in the world, Vanek hit the post, and the Islanders would go on to win the game, 4-2. Amazingly, Furlatt didn't punish this honest mistake with a penalty shot for the Islanders.

Anyway. I just shared this so we could all be outraged together.

    s/t to Kukla's Korner.

Poor Officiating for an Islanders game? For Isles fans it's just another night.

Amen, my friend. I notice you have no thumbs down.

If you would have watched the game, you would of noticed all of the awful calls against the sabres.

Not the first time this year the Islanders have been on the short end of a terrible officiating decision, other examples being the phantom Hamonic high sticking call and the Tavares "dive." Those are just the ones I can think of at the moment but there's been other. The NHL officiating is starting to make Serie A and the NBA look good.
      • Steve 4 months ago
Don't forget Hamonic's delay of game... because we all know that when you shoot the puck off the glass it's still a penalty!

NHL officiating is a straight-up joke. Has been for a long time. Let's be honest; it's a hard job and nobody's perfect, but there's no way in hell that these incompetent buffoons are the best in the world at what they do.

Have you watched officiating for other leagues? The NHL guys are hands down the best.

I went to an Islanders/Stars game last month and as a #$%$ fan i can tell you the calls were grotesquely one sided against the Isles. They didn't stand a chance.
    • Jim  •  4 months ago
It's almost as absurd as Kaleta's charging call.
      • Alex 4 months ago
Yea, almost as absurd. Only Kaleta's call wasn't going to potentially change the outcome of the entire game. Bit of a difference there.

Just another screwjob by the refs towards the Isles this year.4. This #$%$ call. he obviosuly didn't lift it off on purpose, and it wasn't like Buffalo had a scoring chance going.3. The game against the Leafs around Christmas. A leaf player cross checks John Tavares in the face knocking him on the ice. The idiot ref from Near Toronto calls the cross check, but also a dive on Tavares. Not only taking our PP away, but also our best player with only 3 minutes left in the game. ridiculous, #$%$ call that nobody, even Leafs fans thought was the right call. The NHL ignored this story, Obviously.2. Game against the Penguins. Isles lead by a goal and Travis Hamonic tried a harmless hit in the corner. He bumps Brook Oprik's stick into his face. Orpik falls down like he's been shot. The Ref throws hamonic out of the game. He must have been guessing because it wasn't even any kind of penalty, much less a game misconduct. Not even those homer pens announcers tried to say this was anythiung but the worst penalty cal lof the year.1. OT gainst the AVs early in the year. Hamonic hits the puck off the glass into the crowd.and the ref calls delay of game, even after the officials all got together to discuss said play. These are not borderline missed calls. These are all atrocious calls at horrible times of the game that affected the outcome. If any of us screwed p this bad at our jo#$%$ we would be fired. These calls go unnoticed by the NHL. Screw the NHL.

1 Cup in 70+ Years and Ranger Puke Fans have the nerve to talk.. Enjoy this regular season run because we all know once the playoffs come around those clowns at the Garden start gripping those sticks a little tighter. Hey i have a question.. When was the last time the #$%$ boy Henrik was out of the 2nd round????????? NEVER!

A solid, solid comment. Truly solid.

The Rangers have nothing to do with this poor article. Teams go through ups and downs, the Islanders are currently on the bottom end of a downward spiral. Just happens that theirs was a little longer than the Rangers', but the Rangers went through the same thing from the late 90's right up to the lockout.

Trashing a team with inarticulate nonsense is, simply put, stupid. Moreso when the team you trash is atop the league. Even moreso when your team, who is a great rival of the team you trash, is at the bottom. The rivalry is only great when the teams are playing at the same level. You're not promoting the rivalry by acting like you're five. You're just indulging in the kind of crap we've come to expect from Flyers fans.

Chris, it is guys like you that make the rest of us Islander fans look bad. Shut your mouth. The Rangers are the best team in the league and Henrik should finally get his Vezina. You are talking trash about a team that has won 11 of 12. Get your head out of your #$%$

Hey guys it is not a dumb rule it is just hockey. The rule was put in so that the officials do not have to determine intent. So get over it.
    • Bobby Scribe  •  Orange, California  •  4 months ago
Furlatt may be the dumbest ref in the game. He reminds me of Magoo.
    • Rob R  •  4 months ago
Absolutely shameful call. Shouldn't an NHL ref be the best in the business? Embarassing.
    • Geetman  •  Tampa, Florida  •  4 months ago
Harrison - it's in the rulebook. Try fact-checking before printing something that makes you sound absurdly amateur. It's pretty clear from the tone of your rant that you're an Islanders fan. It's still no excuse to blatantly miss the obvious and completely undermine your own point. What's really sad is that Yahoo! seems disinterested in having professional journalists handle the opinions for sports and instead we get stuck with armchair hacks like yourself.

He didnt knock it off intentionally at first...but he gave the goal a shove backwards afterwards instead of trying to fix it...it was a good call by the ref...
    • Andrew  •  Lancaster, New York  •  4 months ago
Before you write stupid and pointless articles, please try to get your facts straight. According to the rule book, if there are under 2 minutes left and a player knocks his own net off, the ref can either award a goal or a penalty shot. Therefore I would say this was a perfectly correct call.

How do you even get a job writing about hockey without knowing the rules?
    • Chaas  •  4 months ago
This rule can be called at the referee's discretion, and he obeyed the letter of the law. If every NHL game was reffed like that, I'd be much happier. Calls made at the referee's discretion ends up with guys going to the box for ticky-tack calls where blatant penalties are ignored all day. As evidence I submit every NHL game that has ever been played in which a viewer who actually knows anything about the rules voices a legitimate complaint about poor refereeing. Pro tip: it's all of them.
    • martin  •  4 months ago
Looks intentional to me. Looks like he gave it another shove for a good measure.
    • JWJr  •  4 months ago
The "2 minute rule" (63.5) only applies if the net is dislodged during a _breakaway_, which this clearly was not.

If a player knocks their teams net off in the last 2 minutes, a penalty shot is awarded. It's in the NHL rule book Harrison. Quite frankly, the only absurd thing here is the contributer, and we readers should be outraged at poor attempts at blogging.

Tough call, but I don't think it's horrible. This is the problem with referee discretion. The ref is justified either way.

I think Andrew found what the ref was ruling here.

Streit does himself no favors my putting his hands on the frame and pushing, but through the benefit of replay, we can see he did that after the net was already dislodged.

My guess is the ref only saw Streit's hands when making the call, which would look intentional. If he saw the net was already off before Streit pushed it, then it might have been a different story.

But am I outraged? No, just a tough call.
