Looking for their first win against the Detroit Red Wings in seven games, Hanzal potted a pair of goals and Mike Smith made 30 saves as the Coyotes were victorious 3-1. Ray Whitney had a pair of helpers to extend his points streak to five games and give him eight points over that stretch. The win puts Phoenix two points behind the Minnesota Wild for the final spot in the Western Conference.
With his two-goal, one assist night, Kessel moved into a tie for third in NHL scoring at 57 points and all alone in third in goals with his 28th and 29th of the year. The Leafs' 6-3 win over Edmonton gives Toronto five victories in their last six games. Kessel's three points also put him over the 300-point plateau in his career.
Ryan scored his 20th of the season in the first period and in the shootout to help the Ducks get past the Calgary Flames 3-2. Jonas Hiller made 24 saves and Niklas Hagman scored the decisive goal in the eighth round of the shootout to earn them their 10th win in 14 games.
Honorable mention: Clarke MacArthur extended his points streak to five games with a goal and an assist ... Mikhail Grabovski chipped in two assists to give him 12 points over his last six games ... Jordan Eberle scored twice for Edmonton. He has six goals and nine points in three games ... Jarome Iginla hit the 20-goal mark for the 13 straight season ... Milestone games for Ray Whitney (1,200th) and Danny Cleary (800th) ... How 'bout the hands on Boyd Gordon?
... or Joffrey Lupul?
Did you know? "Flames winless stretch in Anaheim extends to 14 games. Haven't won at Honda [Center] since '04." -- Eric Stephens, OC Register.
Dishonorable mention: Luca Sbisa was given a five-minute major for an illegal hit to the head and a game misconduct for a collision with Tim Jackman:
Oilers head coach Tom Renney was forced to miss the game after a taking a puck to the head during the morning skate and needing stitches ... Ryan Nugent-Hopkins left the game in the third period after aggravating a shoulder injury. The Oilers say he'll be re-evaluated on Tuesday ... Finally, Cam Barker. Yeah, not pretty:
