Monday’s Three Stars: Arnott scores two in Blues win; Lundqvist blanks Devils

Dustin Brown attempts to kick his way to the goalNo. 1 Star: Jason Arnott, St. Louis Blues

Jason Arnott scored two power play goals -- one on either side of the second intermission -- to stake the St. Louis Blues to a 3-1 win over the Calgary Flames. Patrick Berglund added an assist on each as the Blues tied the Detroit Red Wings for 1st in the Central Division with 85 points in 63 games. The loss was Calgary's fourth straight.

No. 2 Star: Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers

He was hardly busy, only facing 13 shots in the entire game, but Lundqvist stopped all of them for his 8th shutout of the season as the Rangers ended the New Jersey Devils seven-game road winning streak with a 2-0 win. Carl Hagelin scored the only goal the Rangers would need, and Ryan Callahan iced the game with an empty-netter.

No. 3 Star: Taylor Hall, Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers trailed 2-1 going into the third period, but then they exploded for four straight goals and never looked back in a 5-3 win over the Winnipeg Jets. Hall had a goal and an assist in the win, as did centre Lennart Petrell.

Honourable mention: David Legwand assisted on both goals for the Nashville Predators in their 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings. Pekka Rinne made 30 saves. Dustin Brown had the lone goal for the Kings -- he's now been in on all five goals the Kings have scored since rumours of his availability surfaced after the Jeff Carter trade. The Kings have lost 5 of 6... Ryan O'Reilly and Matt Duchene scored less than two minutes apart early in the third period to give the Colorado Avalanche a 4-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks. Gabriel Landeskog and Steve Downie had 2 assists apiece, giving Downie 7 points in his last 3 games... Alex Burmistrov had a goal and an assist for the Jets. Ondrej Pavelec allowed 5 goals, but he also made this sweet pad stack on Ales Hemsky:

Did you know? The Devils have held their opponents to 16 shots or fewer in three consecutive games.

Dishonourable mention: David Clarkson came away from this tilt with Brandon Dubinsky with an extra two-minute minor for charging, I think for the egregious flying leap he takes to instigate the fight. This might be the most blatant leap we've seen in the NHL this season. Will Shanahan come a-calling?

I would have mentioned that Henrik Lundquist extended an NHL record by recording his 30th win in all 7 years since his career started. Also, a league leading 8th shutout. I think there's a lot of merit in a Lundquist/Malkin hart showdown right now.

Those 13 shots he faced were tough too. *cough*

But I will add, its a serious accomplishment to win 30 games in 7 years. Good for King Henry

I think the sum of the parts tonight merits punishment for Clarkson. 19 PIM and a figure skater's height on the jump? He did his team no good throughout the game with selfish play.

Yeah, not exactly what the Devils needed

I can't see any way that Shanahan can't ban Clarkson for that...

Legwand should have been the #2 star. No offense to King Henry, he stopped all the shots he faced, but there were only 13 of them. King Henrys defense could have been the #3 star.

Sometimes when goalies face more shots and feel the puck bounce off their pads they get "hotter." An argument could be made that it's more difficult to stop less shots because you're "cold."

But it really wasn't in this case John. He only made a couple of tough saves. The Rangers sat in a defensive shell all night, they barely even tried to forecheck. It was a weird game. There was no flow, the hits were pretty nasty and Clarkson couldn't stop being a douche long enough to actually get a shift. Thanks for the win Clarkson, I've awarded you the victory.

I didn't say King Henry played poorly. I just don't think he earned the #2 star over Legwand.

That is going to be a suspension based on how it looks, not on the severity of the play.

A NJ Devils failed goon attempt. Flyers tried to out "tough-guy" the Rangers and they failed too.

Bad play by Clarkson (and potentially dangerous at that) but he's not a goon.

        You're right. He's not a goon. He's an #$%$

I like how this criticism is coming from the fan base that supported Avery for all those seasons...

the Shanahammer will smite Clarkson, for he who flies will sit for at least two games...

So is this the start of a big tear for Nashville now? Central is going to be gobbling up most of the West playoff spots, it seems. They're only 4 pts behind Detroit and St. Louis, as well.

Clarkson is such a wuss. No respect for him at all, don't care how many goals he has this season. Just a wuss, always has been, always will be.

He should be punished due to the crap that he pulled on the ice all night long. He wanted to hurt dubinsky but did not succeed. If you watched the game he was trying run him all night.
    • vertroue  •  2 months ago
Left his feet, yes... but doesn't he then need to make some kind of contact other than... that...
    • James F  •  2 months ago
Clarkson definitely did one heck of a leap to hit Dubinsky, but he barely hit him really. He wasn't going that fast and the flying leap hardly did anything. He'll probably get a fine or 1-2 games tops. Honestly, to me, it looks like the kind of charge that really only deserves a two-minute penalty because even though he jumped, it really wasn't that vicious.

how about a dishonorable mention to the scheduling dept for having anaheim travel to colorado the night following their first home game after a two-week roadie? looked like they had cinder blocks attached to their skates in the third.

why wasnt clarkson at the combine with that jump
    • LJE  •  Irvine, California  •  2 months ago
Is it really worth a suspension if there was no injury? Just give him a fine and be done with it. If Turris can get off scot-free for a hit that seemed to just give Joe Corvo a headache, Clarkson can escape with a fine here.

If Lundqvist was canadian he would have won the Vezina years ago.... Without lundqvist NYR is a mediocre team.
    • James F  •  2 months ago
Dubinsky turned, no fine or suspension.

I'll be the first to admit that Henrik is a #$%$ good goalie, but can we hold off with the "King" coronation until he actually wins something in the NHL?
