Mike Smith’s save of year candidate on Marian Gaborik OT penalty shot (Video)

Marian Gaborik is, arguably, the New York Rangers' deadliest offensive player. Giving him a penalty shot in overtime — which Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Adrian Aucoin did, slashing him on a breakaway on Tuesday night — would appear to be a handy way to effectively end the game.

Coyotes goalie Mike Smith, however, had other plans: Stopping Gaborik with his stick on a spectacular clutch save to extend the game. Check it:

"Are you kidding me?! What did he stop this puck with?!"

Uh, a cast iron skillet? Or a dead trout? No, wait, probably that large stick he uses to occasionally block shots. Yeah, that.

The Rangers would go on to win the game, 2-1, as Derek Stepan scored in the sixth round of the shootout and Henrik Lundqvist saved a Shane Doan attempt.

This is one of those saves in which half the hockey world will marvel at it and the other half will say, "Meh, all he had to do was elevate the puck." In fairness to Smith, it did appear he had his stick raised on the save, so it was a more difficult save than it looked.

Check out this Smith stop on a Nik Antropov penalty shot from earlier this season, and Sean Avery of the Rangers beating him on a penalty shot in 2010.

I thought it was a good save....but later in the call the tardy announcers said "this save will be on highlight reels for years to come." I thought this was some of the worst commentary I've ever heard.....damn you NHL Center Ice for not giving me the option of hearing people that know about hockey.....damn you to hell!

I want to know how the play-by-play guy thinks that's "a lousy call" for the penalty shot...

That call was weak as hell. A PS should only be awarded if the guy gets hauled down on a clear breakaway. But the refs are being very liberal this year.

Uhh... he was slashed/hooked on the hands when he was clearly by the defender. Seemed like a pretty obvious call.

breakaway opportunity taken away by a slash to the hands by a defender from behind - textbook penalty shot call. Anyone who doesn't think that's a legit penalty shot is either a) a biased homer, b) a complete idiot who doesn't comprehend the rules of hockey, or c) all of the above

People do not bend and twist the Smith did on Gaborik's shot. The penalty shot has lost a lot of its luster because of the shootout system, but that save ranks a 10 in degree of difficulty.

It was a great save under the circumstances, but Gaborik really had him beat and him reaching out with his stick really was one of those last-ditch efforts, then again, those are the types of saves that make the highlight reels.

Smith played an excellent game, stole at least two other goals. The NYR's controlled the game with vast amounts of time controlling the puck in the opposing teams end. When teams play the NYR's as hard as Phoe did, their lack of a 1st line LW and decent scoring on the 2nd line become more apparent. Can they go deep without better scoring??

but in typical Mike Smith fashion, he lost the shootout. Haha. Trust me I'm a Lightning fan.

True-he always had problems one on one, but it doesn't seem like that now. TBL & SFY are definetely second guessing their decisions to go with dinosaurs.

I played goalie. That's a MUCH tougher shot to stop than you guys think. Especially with someone as talented as Gaborik and the speed and angle at which he was coming in. That was an excellent save...

it was luck , no skill , cause even smith didnt know he saved it . if it was skill smith would not have looked to see where the puck was.

great save but gaborik would tell you himself he intended to throw that puck to the top of the net but couldn't get under it

The best goalie is the one you don't really notice. Smith was undressed on that penalty shot. 9 out of 10 times the shooter scores on that. I wouldn't go singing his praises. Almost complete Luck. Entertaining but Lucky.

Good save, but way to early to talk about save of the year considering it is still January.

When asked, "Do you marvel at that kind of save?" Lundqvist said, "...it was a desperation save...it was an amazing save to keep it alive."
    • Scott M  •  4 months ago
Most "amazing saves" are just like this, complete luck. However, just getting the stick out there in desperation to MAKE Gaborik have to elevate the puck is what makes it great. Gaborik was sure he had him beat but Smith gets a stick out there and gets lucky. Every amazing save is just like that. The best saves are the ones most people see as routine because the goalie is actually in position and square to the shooter. They are boring though, which is why we appreciate the lucky saves where a goalie is out the play and still somehow makes it.

Nice save. Opposing goalies always raise their game against the Rangers. I think they are trying to impress Lundqvist.

It's true. The Rangers owned the Coyotes tonight and should have won this 2-0 or 3-0.

        Really.... really how what?
      • Daniel 4 months ago
Yea, so considering who it was against, the year he's having and the situation, I think it's a pretty darn good save.

meh.. its an ok save. More like a desperation move by Smith.

"please god let his shot hit my stick.. please god let his shot hit my stick... please god let his shot hit my stick.."
      • James F 4 months ago
You're right, the most entertaining and skillful saves are the ones where the goalie is perfectly square to the shooter and gets hit in the chest. I'd much rather see that than see a desperation lunge across the crease after a slick move/pass.
      • Roswell survivor 4 months ago
But the saving grace was that he put himself in that position for the save. But I agree, it was a good save, but not a great highlight reel save.

Why was that even deserving of a penalty shot? I guess the ref had a date...

      That call was so weak...
