Just the way Mike Smith was writhing in pain on the Madison Square Garden ice Monday night you could tell whatever leg injury he suffered, it appeared to be brutal.
Coyotes head coach Dave Tippett told the media ahead of their game against the Penguins Tuesday night that Smith had undergone tests and the results will be sent back to team doctors in Phoenix to be evaluated. The official diagnosis won't be known until they return home from their current road trip after Thursday's game in New Jersey.
Mark Visentin has been called up to back up Thomas Greiss, as Smith has been given an encouraging "day-to-day" status. Fox Sports Arizona's Craig Morgan offered a bit more of a rosier view:
I'm told that Mike Smith's injury is not as bad as was originally appeared. The team is thinking now that it just may be a mild sprain.

The Coyotes have 10 games left and sit one point ahead of the Dallas for the final Western Conference wild card spot. The Vancouver Canucks are lingering just behind, but it looks as if Phoenix will have to fend off the Stars for that last berth. Having Smith in net certainly improves their odds.
UPDATE: John Gambadoro of 98.7 Phoenix Tweets that he's heard Smith suffered a leg strain and will miss two weeks. That's two very big weeks for the Coyotes.
