Lauren Pronger, wife of Flyers’ Chris Pronger, opens up about her husband’s concussion (Video)

We've heard a lot about concussions over the past year, but it's not often that you hear from the wives of the players suffering from them. That's what makes this video, in which Chris Pronger's wife Lauren opens up about her husband's slow recovery, so compelling.

Heartbreaking, too. While the Philadelphia Flyers no doubt miss a healthy Chris Pronger, it would appear the Pronger family does as well. From CSN Philly:

As someone who's never suffered a concussion, I can't say what would be tougher: being alone during such a difficult period, or being surrounded by friends and family that don't quite understand and can't help but feel anxious. It seems as though, with the headaches and the sensitivity to noise and light, being alone would be preferable at times.

But, as the video indicates, it's not always an option when you have a family.

This quote from Mrs. Pronger really stood out to me:

"[The kids] are confused all the time. 'Dad, when can we go to a game, Dad when are you gonna play,' and he looks at them, he's like, 'Please don't ask that question because God knows I want to get out there and I want to play too.' So it's been an adjustment for all of us. He's around a lot more, I'm not used to that, but I do as much as I can to support him and I want to see him better.

I can't help but key in on that final point, about what the family is used to. As the son of a retired pilot, I can safely say that, when someone goes from coming home intermittently to being at home permanently, the adjustment is hard for everyone. Add a concussion to the mix and it has to be even moreso.

As for Pronger's recovery timeline, depressingly, there's still no indication of progress. "We're hoping for a better day tomorrow, and at least a couple good days in a row would be nice," Lauren says.

We can only join the Pronger family in wishing Chris a speedy recovery.

Pronger is one of those guys you hate, unless he's on your team. I hope he recovers, but history has shown otherwise.

#1-Pronger's wife is gorgeous, he is a lucky man! #2-I hope he gets better soon, its really depressing to see what he and his family are going through. #3-The Flyers are really missing his presence on the ice. They really need his leadership and his size out there! Get well Chris!!

Some real class in the comments section /sarcasm

We all demand pro athletes go out and give everything they have, for our amusement, and then when they get hurt you laugh or turn your back on them?

Guess as a species we have not evolved much from the Colosseum days.

Whether you love a player or hate them, nobody deserves to go out like this.

I do not see a wife that is ready to leave.. it is called to be sincere.. she did not sugar coat the interview. she was very open. I wish the whole Pronger family a fast and full recovery.

The sad thing is, everyone hating on Pronger, would jump for joy if he ended up on their team. The guy makes teams better. Plain and simple

Sorry, not everyone, I would hate it if Pens would every sign him. Good player, no doubt, but he is rude, arrogent, childish, etc etc. I do pray for a full recovery for him and for his families sake but "jump for joy if he ended up on our team"?, no way.

i love how everyone says he sucks. he has what, a stanley cup, 2 gold medals, norris trophy, hart trophy, a bunch of all star appearances, and will be in the hall of fame. but yeah, he sucks. and since some people think they are so much better, why are they not playing in the nhl?!

I wish she'd open up about what happened between her husband and that Global News Edmonton news anchor.

I heard it was a team mates wife. The Oilers couldn't care less if he cheated with a news anchor, but another team mates wife??? well then they would gladly obliged in trading him when asked. Nice cover.

come on, do you really believe that rumor? how many times must i hear this same rumor about different guys on different teams?
      • Ernie L 4 months ago
It was a news reporter. His wife found out, and that's why she wanted out of town.

Jeff Carter was traded out of Philly because he banged Hartnell's wife (after they split). And Phanuef was moved out of Calgary for nailing Conroy's wife. Prust was traded out of Calgary because he tried to bang Iginla.

get well Chris...the game needs you...

He could always retire. The guy is 37 years old and has millions in the bank. Many people who have suffered concussions don't even have that option.

      Just sayin'...

does any athlete not have a super hot wife, just must be a huge coincidence right? i mean theres no correlation to how much money they make right?

Had a head injury, no piece of cake. Two years 24/7 without let up of migraine, memory loss, siezures for 10 years, dizzy spells, etc. Lots of luck to him and family..

Whose hockey career did Chris Pronger end? I'm sorry folks, I can't hear you, I asked a question...anyone? Exactly.

I pray for you and your family everyday Chris! You're still our Captain!
      • James 4 months ago
whos hockey career did scott stevens end??? flyer fans drop dead!
      • Sarah 4 months ago
        James, are you being serious??
Scott Stevens may have not ended, but he drastically altered Eric Lindros and Paul Kariya's careers, albeit with clean hits (at the time).

Gotta say, flyers fans take a verbal beating from fans around the league about being classless, but literally every comment here is attacking Chris Pronger and his family, while the man is suffering from a very serious injury, that will likely end his career and change the way he lives the rest of his life. Now.... might be a good time to look in the mirror

Chris' children play pee-wee hockey in Philly. His wife has always been the nicest person at the rink and Chris has always been generous and gracious with his time with ordinary folks. It's easy to fire disgusting comments, but Mr. & Mrs. Pronger are real people that are suffering through a life-changing moment in their lives. I couldn't agree with you more Sarah.

I watched Chris Pronger many a year in St Louis. He was one of the five best hockey defensemen I have ever seen play the game. He slowed down a little bit after a couple moves, but he is still on a very short list of the top players "currently". I wish him a speedy & full recovery, but if its time to get out of the game -- get out of the game. I don't know as much about concussions as I do about injuries to the back, hips, ankles, knees, eyes, and wrists -- but there are plenty of former NHL players that paid dearly for those extra 2-4 seasons in the NHL.

Tough life being a stripper. You might have to live in Edmonton.
    • German Titov  •  4 months ago
She'll leave him just as fast as she left Edmonton.

      Don't marry strippers, Chris.

Anybody can play this "karma's a b--ch" game. I, for one, laugh every day at the karma affecting that p--sy named Sidney Crosby and his legion of c--ksmoking fans in Pussburgh.
