This Kyle Turris headshot on Joe Corvo made Jack Edwards rather displeased (VIDEO)

After Chris Neil's punishing hit on Johnny Boychuk in the third period of the Ottawa Senators' loss to the Boston Bruins, Kyle Turris decided to bring some pain of his own on Joe Corvo — but he made the head the principal point of contact.

    NESN

Coming up after the jump, the hit and the reaction from Jack Edwards and Andy Brickley from NESN (s/t Kukla; auto-play video warning).

UPDATE: Turris will have a disciplinary hearing on Sunday.

UPDATE No. 2: Per Sportsnet's Ian Mendes, Turris will not be suspended. Here's Brendan Shanahan's explanation:

"Because there was enough head contact on this hit, the Department of Player Safety felt it was necessary to convene a hearing to examine the play further," NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety and Hockey Operations Brendan Shanahan said. "After reviewing the video extensively as we heard Turris' explanation of how the play developed, we concluded that the head was not targeted intentionally or even recklessly and that the circumstances surrounding the hit contributed significantly to the amount
    of head contact that resulted.

"We therefore have decided that there will be no supplemental discipline added to the penalty assessed on the play."

    Said Jack Edwards:

"Corvo's down … Turris came from behind … he came from a RIDICULOUS distance, and Turris ought to be sit and payin' for a long time … that's just chicken ... chicken is what that is … leaves his feet, suspension, Mr. Shanahan will be busy with Mr. Turris … that's just rubbish."

So, seriously, tell us how you really feel …

Turris was given two minutes for boarding on the play. One imagines he'll get additional penalties from the NHL for a hit that shouldn't happen under our 2012 protect the brain at all costs rulebook. That is, once the NHL gets over the initial shock of Kyle Turris delivering a hit.

Jack Edwards is the biggest dingbat homer on the planet, he sounds like a Simpsons character.

Jack is brutal every game. He's an embarrassment to broadcasting.

The guy is on the NEW ENGLAND sports network...it's not TSN or NBC or ComcastSports Wherever; he's was hired in part to be a homer.

Turris probably gave the Marchand defense to the question of why he did it: "I felt like it."

Jack Edwards is an embarrassment. His description of the hit is just plain wrong. It warranted a penalty, but not much more; Edwards makes it sound like genocide. And sorry Andy Brickley, the Neil hit was clean.

"Edwards makes it sound like genocide"

        LOL!

If you watched the NESN broadcast, Brickley called the Neil hit clean. Don't lump him in with Edwards.

I have to agree. From the aftermath, it looked like not even Neil expected it to be that big of a hit. Blame it on circumstance for the most part.

Agreed Neil did nothing more than clock someone who had his head down

I think the word you're looking for is devastating

every hit on a bruin is dirty to jack edwards. its always clean if its lucic doing these things
      • James F 2 months ago
That's why he said the Neil hit was clean after watching the replay, right? Or the reason that he usually doesn't call any hits dirty unless they actually are? How about you actually watch Jack Edwards and then comment on him, rather than making claims just based on what Puck Daddy says and a few highlights (lowlights?).
      • Phillip 2 months ago
James did you not just hear him say the Neil hit was borderline dirty and a hit to the head?
      • James F 2 months ago
Phillip: I did you one better, I watched the full game. Jack and Brick both said that hit was clean. It looked borderline right away because it was so devastating, but after they had awhile to see it they both said it was clean.

OK. I'll admit, I used a poor choice of words when I said Jack Edwards deserves to be shot, especially in light of recent tragic events. But how is that different from the daily abuse that Jack Edwards imparts on every and all Bruins opponents. Jack Edwards is constantly making poor choices of words. The man is a Jackass and deserves to be shot, figuratively speaking.

The distance Turris traveled is not what bothered me about that hit, Jack.

lol jack edwards is such a clown. how can you listen to him with a straight face? i almost never hear him being critical of bruins players
    • A111  •  2 months ago
If that was Lucic hitting Karlson, Edwards would have been like, OH AND LUCIC COMES IN TO LAY A RIDICULOUS.. LY AWESOME HIT ON KARLSON, SERVES HIM RIGHT FOR SCORNIG POINTS! THATS WHAT THE FORWARDS ON THE ICE DO.

All these people that hate Jack should try watching a Penguins feed or a Buffalo feed. Their guys are just as bad.
    • ultracraignetic  •  2 months ago
      Jack Edwards shut up forever.
    • TimeToGo  •  2 months ago
Launching and leaving your feet to make contact near the boards should be a suspendible offense in itself. I like hard-hitting hockey, but I've seen alot of bad things happen when players leave their feet.

Edwards is terribly bias, remove some of those comments he actually isnt a bad announcer. Brickley is one of the better colour commentators and can level things that Jack says. Everyone home team commentators is bias. Joe Bowen in Toronto is pretty bad as well.

Turris' hit was dirty, simple as that. First contact was with Corvo's head. The way Shanahan has been calling it, he should sit for 2 games. Neil#$%$ on Boychuk was clean, a clock cleaner for sure, but clean. Jack Edwards is a New England announcer, so yes, he's obviously going to be biased toward Boston. I dont know why this is difficult for some of you meatheads to understand. He is a great play by play guy, been doing it since the bad old days of Bruins hockey, and always has an upbeat attitude, even when the Bruins were absolutely horrible. Bruins fan love him because he isnt just another talking head, spewing out the corporate crap. Jack's the man, and hopefully, he'll be around for a long time. If you dont like him, listen to the other teams feed.

Edwards constantly amazes by his ability, against all odds, to get progressively worse as time goes by. There are other irritating announcers--Errey is a tremendous homer for the Pens, The Blue's John Kelly uses the same hyper-excited cadence no matter how boring the game is & the voice of the Vancouver Canuck's play-by-play guy sounds like a muppet who's had a lobotomy--but for me, Edwards is the most difficult to listen to and it's not close.

Clean save for the feet coming off the ice. Jack, shut up.
    • BoogerPresley  •  Victoria, Canada  •  2 months ago
      clean hit.
If BOS can do it why not other teams.

      clean hit.
    • Swift's Toole Box  •  2 months ago
At least this hit was delivered to Corvo and not one of the useful defensemen.

I wish Turris would get a headshot on Jack Edwards. He's awful.
    • Mustache of Kes  •  2 months ago
I'm honestly embarrassed on behalf of Bruin fans when it comes to Jack Edwards. He may very well be the worst play by play man in all of sports.

I'm not saying the Turris hit was clean per se, but I've seen Bruins make identical hits, and heard him mock the opposing team's crowd when they call for a penalty.

Re: the hits - Neil on Boychuk = clean... Turris on Corvo... uhhhhhhmmm.. no comment.
