John Scott on leading All-Star vote: ‘Definitely don't want to be voted in’

As of Wednesday evening, John Scott of the Arizona Coyotes was the leading vote getter for the 2016 NHL All-Star Game. Which is odd, because for many fans the pugilistic Scott is the antithesis of the kind of player you’d expect to see in the All-Star Game.

But thanks to a push from podcasters (guilty!) and Reddit and social media, Scott has rocketed to the top of the leaderboard. We wrote about this year’s fan-driven voting sensation earlier.

The question many had as Scott became the nerd voted Homecoming King of this season’s All-Star Game:

What did he think of all of this?

Sarah McLellan of AZCentral.com asked him:

"I don’t know what’s going on," Scott said Wednesday after the Coyotes finished practice at Joe Louis Arena. "I just kind of stay out of it. Everyone gives me updates. The guys are giving me a hard time about it, but it's kind of neat. The fans, they obviously like me for some reason. I think it’s more of a joke than anything, but I’ll take it."

Well, he won’t necessarily take it.

Scott, who has one assist in six games this season, said he really doesn’t want to have the infamy that comes with a joke vote:

"I don’t want to have my name in the headlines for this reason," Scott said. "Like, it's a fun little thing and hopefully it'll die down over time. It’s not something -- I definitely don't want to be voted into the All-Star Game. It would be cool, but I definitely don't deserve it to this point. You never know. There's still some time left. I could turn it on."

So there you go: Vote John Scott knowing that he won’t really feel like he deserves it unless he’s playing like an all-star by the end of January. Which we guess is possible, if a little unlikely.
