Henrik Lundqvist raises $35,000 for charity by selling Rangers Winter Classic mask

Henrik Lundqvist played a huge part in the New York Rangers' 2012 NHL Winter Classic victory at Citizen's Bank Park in Philadelphia. He made 34 saves, frustrated the Philadelphia Flyers throughout the game and stopped a penalty shot by Danny Briere in the final moments to preserve the win.

Now, Lundqvist has played another key role for Garden of Dreams, a non-profit charity that has helped "thousands of special children and their families" — by selling the mask he wore during the outdoor game. From the Rangers:

The New York Rangers announced today that the $35,000 net proceeds from the sale of goaltender Henrik Lundqvist's game-worn Winter Classic mask will benefit the Garden of Dreams Foundation.

Lundqvist, the spokesperson for the Garden of Dreams, commissioned two masks for the nationally televised outdoor game, with the sole purpose of making the second mask available to raise funds for the Foundation.

The sale of the mask through Madison Square Garden's partnership with Steiner Sports for MSG-Steiner Collectibles, illustrates Lundqvist's commitment to helping fulfill the Foundation's mission to make dreams come true for children facing obstacles.

For comparison's sake, a luxury suite for the Winter Classic — 16 tickets and three parking passes — was going for around $43,000.

I am the farthest from a NYR fan, but where's the League's marketing behind this guy? Makes mere mortals look like mud when standing next to him, his hair genes could be harvested to create a cure for baldness, he's a hell of a goalie, and extraordinarily charitable. How to cure the black eye the League's concussion issues have created this year? Institute better league discipline and better helmet technology. And talk about guys like King Henrik.

for head injuries. i blame them trying to take out fighting. how many ppl have gotten a huge hit for being mad about something. instead drop the gloves and settle it that way. no need to end a career/season with a hit

They have been, and are always working on improving player protection with things like helmet technology. I don't know if you're a player or not, but the helmets today are better than they were ten years ago

Ice hockey player......class is nothing new to these guys. Great job!!

Apparently, you've never played. Tell me hockey players are classy after a year or two of juniors.

Truth rising..you sound a little bitter. I hope one morning you will wake up and realize how lucky you were to be in the juniors. There are guys that would sell their soul to be in your position, never forget that. Truth can be a bitter pill to swallow; but it can ultimately set you free.

I applaud this man! I have not watched hockey in a few years... I miss it! However seeing something like this... I wish nothing more than this man and other people like him the absolute best! I just wish that more would follow in his example!

      Again, I applaud this man!

So go back to watching this great game. You are missing such great players, such as Lundqvist, one of the top goalies of his era.

Living in Arkansas, not too many people will get that on the TV stations there. Lived in the North most of my life, moved south and Little Rock has no Hockey team! LOL! I have shook hands with Gordie Howe, at a Cleveland Lumberjacks Game WAY back when... I have seen the Penguins at the Igloo many, many times... I went to Buffalo and saw the Sabres! I have gone to Detroit to watch the Red Wings. It is a great sport! Too many people have NO CLUE what they are missing out on! Even more sad and virtually pathetic is that these men are in a sport FAR more dangerous and rigorous than Baseball, Basketball, and even Football! Yet, they are paid fractions less! That SUCKS!

As a Swede and Rangers fan Henrik makes me proud; a genuinly good guy and esp. this season he´s been more awesome than usual.
On my AllTimeSwedeGreats-list he´s moving up there into Forsberg territory at #1.

hate the rangers I'm a flyers fan till i die. but he is great goalie and seems like a great guy. i agree there should definitely be some more marketing behind a guy like this so we can get this league back where it belongs
      • Gordon 4 months ago
Yes, he is a great goalie and a great guy. And as a lifelong Ranger fan, I have hated the Flyers going back to the days of the "Broad Street Bullies" who were despised around the league for their thuggish methods.
      • cr4461 4 months ago
The Broad Street Bullies weren't despised around the league, they were feared around the league.

No they were despised. Watch the doc. Broad St. Bullies on HBO

Well done Henrik. Another example of why hockey players are the best sports people and hockey is the best sport.

the best thing about being a hockey fan is knowing how involved the players are with the communities the live and play in while always remembering where they come from. they may get a lot of flack for on ice antics but at the heart of it they are a bunch of guys who know they are very lucky to be making a living playing a game they love and that without their fans and communities supporting them they'd wouldn't have that.

Im primarily a football fan, but hockey is the only true sport left. Hockey will raise in popularity, but hope they dont do the same thing that they did with football and take the hitting away, thats what makes this sport great!
