Friday’s Three Stars: Blackhawks lose seventh straight; Wings win nineteenth straight at home

The Colorado Avalanche love each other (AP)No. 1 Star: Brent Burns, San Jose Sharks

It was a 3-point night for Burns versus the Chicago Blackhawks. He assisted on the Sharks' opening goal, then helped break a 3-3 tie by setting up two more tallies in the third period. Burns added a team-high four shots on goal as the Sharks handed the Blackhawks their 7th straight loss in the 5-3 win.

No. 2 Star: Joey MacDonald, Detroit Red Wings

No Howard? No problem. Joey MacDonald stepped up in a big way, making 29 saves to keep the hungry Anaheim Ducks at bay. He stopped 2 of 3 in the shootout as well, and the Red Wings won their 19th straight home game of the year, 2-1. They're one home win away from the NHL record.

No. 3 Star: Ryan O'Reilly, Colorado Avalanche

O'Reilly was the story in the Avalanche's 4-3 overtime win over the Carolina Hurricanes, a win that stretched their home unbeaten streak versus the Carolina franchise to 10 games. He was all over the ice, with six shots and numerous scoring chances, but couldn't seem to finish. Then, with less than two seconds to go in overtime, he poked a puck free, dashed across the blueline, and beat Cam Ward with a slapper:

Honourable mention: Paul Stastny had a goal and an assist for the Avalanche... Benn Ferriero picked up the game-winning goal in San Jose. It was only his 7th goal of the season, but it was his fourth game-winner. He just reeks of clutchiness.... Thomas Vanek scored his 20th goal of the season in the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 shootout victory over the Dallas Stars. He would have had his 21st, too, but Kari Lehtonen made the play of the night, an unreal kick save:

Sadly, it was all for naught, as overtime expired seconds afterward and Nathan Gerbe scored the shootout winner for Buffalo.

Did you know? The NHL fined Tampa Bay Lightning forward Dominic Moore $2,500 for his hit on Ruslan Fedotenko of the New York Islanders.

Dishonourable mention: Friday morning, we pegged George Parros's 84-game goalless streak as the new goal drought to obsess over -- he scored Friday night. Thanks for nothing, man... Trailing by a goal with under 10 minutes to go, Andrew Shaw put the Blackhawks' down a man when he hit Douglas Murray in the head. Jamie McGinn scored this sick goal while he was in the box:

Dishonorable Mention: Not knowing that Fedotenko plays for the Rangers!

No dishonorable mention to the no goal vs. Chicago on another botched "goalie interference" call against Patty? Let alone it was the same ref that did not call the trip against Perry?

Andrew Shaw might want to call in sick for their next game vs SJ. Otherwise Murray might floss his teeth with him.

Yeah I don't know why people keep going after Murray... he's tough.

I haven't really been paying attention to whats going on with Chicago. Can somebody please enlighten me on what the problem is there? Is it coaching, goalie situation, not enough scoring, bad defense? Im not looking to start an argument, I honestly don't know since I don't watch them.

I haven't been paying much attention either, but I'm not too concerned. I remember last year when the Sharks lost 6 in a row in January/February and everyone was jumping off the bandwagon, then they went and won just about every game until the end of the season.

Sometimes good teams just have bad runs, but eventually talent shines through.

did you see the terrible way Crawford tried to stop that? That give you any idea?

I am happy for Joey MacDonald- he has a very similar attitude to the one Tim Thomas had at his age: Never give up. People might laugh at me saying that, but look at Tim Thomas before he was a Bruin and youll see what I mean.

As soon as O'Reilly stole that puck I knew he was going to put it in the back of the net. He deserved that goal.

Dishorable Mention: That thing on Melrose's upper lip! Was that a mic attached to it? (on the NHL channel)
    • Tommy P  •  Southfield, Michigan  •  3 months ago
Haha. I remember when the Wings beat Chicago and the Hawks fans all came on here and blamed it on the refs. Where are those tools now? Haha.

I live in St. Louis, I hated the Cardinals, I don't mind the Blues or Redwings much, but I don't want them to the Stanley Cup Finals.

If O'Reilly doesn't win the Selke, or isn't at least considered for it, then that's a shame.
      • Doh 3 months ago
Landeskog - +15, 1:18 SH time per game
        O"Reilly - -1, 0:52 SH time per game

Guy isn't even a better candidate than the kid is. Nice try. If he finishes as a finalist then there is something seriously wrong with the voters.

Plus / minus is just the worst way to evaluate anything, let alone defensive capabilities. If it were then Seguin would be a WAAAAAY better defensive forward than Datsyuk.

Top three in take aways are Datsyuk, Toewes and O'Reilly. All have great Corsi stats, defensive zone faceoffs, over 50% faceoff stats and take over a 3rd of their' team's faceoffs period. All three play center and on the PK.
      • Doh 3 months ago
Dario... You are correct in saying plus/minus is terrible when comparing across teams. But within a team it becomes more reasonable. And the only reason Seguin has such a good rating is his center, a true Selke contender.

And do you really consider 52 seconds a game to be playing the PK? That's laughable. Noted defensive wizard Ilya Kovalchuk sees more time on the PK than that!

What's up with the HAWKS, they don't want to win? I am concerned. I love my HAWKS.

Wow, is Puck Daddy going soft.......3 mentions of Red Wings in one week without a nasty remark or a mention of Amway. Young guns do not always make the win.....experience and working your butt off goes a long way. We have a great mix of players. The Red Wings are not as "as old" as they say. That's ok, do not pay any attention to Abby. Fil, Helm, Mursak and our other young guys...we like when they fly under the radar and to your net.

The answer to a question nobody asked.
      • Doh 3 months ago
The Red Wings have the highest average age by .65 years... the gap between them and second (Florida) is wider than the gap between 2nd and 9th.

I'd say that makes them old.

        @Doh Obviously it's a formula that isn't working.
