Flyers’ Zac Rinaldo suspended two games for high hit, being Zac Rinaldo

Zac Rinaldo will be sitting out a couple games, as Brendan Shanahan has unleashed the Shanaban-hammer and knocked the Philadelphia Flyers' forward into next week.

Rinaldo received a 2-game suspension for his high hit on Detroit Red Wings' blueliner Jonathan Ericsson Sunday, a behind-the-net check that, while not to the head, featured Rinaldo's best vertical jump since the NHL draft combine. Here's Shanahan with what happens when you launch yourself a good half-foot off the ice while making a hit:

For the clicking impaired, here's your money quote:

"Although Ericsson should have been more aware and prepared to face an oncoming check after reversing the puck, that still doesn't allow Rinaldo to launch himself to deliver such a high hit. By doing so, Rinaldo turned what might have been a hard, legal bodycheck into an illegal charge."

    In short: "HEY. DON'T JUMP."

I especially like the part of the video where they freeze-frame Rinaldo and Ericsson at the same height and draw a big red line, while Shanahan explains that Rinaldo is 5 inches shorter.

But it wasn't just Rinaldo's impression of the 10 lords-a-leaping that got him in trouble. It was also the fact that the incident marks the second time in two weeks that he's been docked five large for his recklessness.

Rinaldo's suspension causes him to forfeit $5,885.88 to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund, pretty close to the amount he lost last week in twin fines for a late hit and a slewfoot versus the New Jersey Devils. As we've seen with recent suspensions to Daniel Carcillo and Raffi Torres, nothing annoys Shanahan quite like guys that fail to get the message.

Hopefully, Rinaldo will this time, especially when he realizes his budget can't handle $5000 a week in disciplinary fees. If he does, he'll have nothing by the season's end. Of course, considering nearly every minute he plays is offset by a minute of discipline -- Rinaldo has 285 minutes on the ice versus 276 minutes in the penalty box or on suspension, according to Eric of Broad Street Hockey -- that might be appropriate.

I am a Flyers fan but it is hard to have any sympathy for Rinaldo. He has a history and a deserved reputation. He knows how to deliver hard, leagal hits-he does it all the time but he has to learn when to let it go if there is even a chance of it being illegal. Sestito is next, he is one stupid hit away from a suspension. Lost on both of them is that Philly's PK sucks! When they do this it plays right into the hands of their opponent.

Reputation is exactly what is wrong with the way the league handles this. Malkin has never been suspended because he doesn't have a reputation. How can you get a reputation if you never get a suspension or an honest evaluation.

2 games might be about right. This is hardly the worst example of a dirty hit (for instance, compare Steve Downie#$%$ behind the net a few years ago), but the real shame is it could have been clean had Rinaldo not left his feet. It was imperative to penalize that sort of move, and given Rinaldo's recent "misbehavior," additional discipline was warranted.

honestly, rinaldo was in the middle of a hockey stop. if you hit a guy with your skates perpendicular to the play like that, you are going to pop up in the air. i'm not making an excuse, just saying to have really stayed on the ice, he would have had to come in full-bore, and THAT hit would have been messy. drilling a guy looking the other way at full speed...that wouldn't have gone over well. his only option there, really, was to bail on the hit. and, if i silence the flyer fan in me, wouldn't have been the worst thing. the puck was already gone (albeit just), and there was no tactical benefit to the hit other than finishing his check.

haha. Steve Downies hit. Chris Kunitz had the same exact hit on Kimmo Timonen in the playoffs and nothing happened. I guess the difference was that Kimmo actually got up and finished his shift without a stoppage of play.

Interesting thought, Ehren. I honestly do not know how to #$%$ the accuracy of that. Since I am not a mind reader, I will never know what Rinaldo was thinking.Flyers, I do not recall that hit. Does not surprise me, though. I remember an absolute garbage hit like that by Colby Armstrong a few years ago--just propelled himself into into the noodle of a guy circling the net. (May have been against the Senators.)

I liked how Shanahan explained how the hit could have been made legally. The verdict sounds fair to me. Too bad the "reformed" Matt Cooke can't have some words with the guy and maybe straighten him out.

Rinaldo is no longer in the two for one deal, two infractions at 2500/each, now it's costing him almost 5900/game. Wondering if he is smart enough to curb his illegal hitting.

Rinaldo never fights anyone when the Flyers need a lift, he just pests people and gets 10 minute misconducts for yapping. He like an even less talented Dan Carcillo.

I think the NJ/Flyers game, where Rinaldo turtled and let his teammate take his whompin' from Kovy for him, pretty much speaks for itself.

I remember this guy escaped a few suspensions already for having a clean history.

      The floodgate finally opened.

Rinaldo and Sestito are like the Bert and Ernie of hockey punks.

        ...AND THEY BOTH REALLY SUCK!!!

I do not know if that is true, Mr. Berlin, CT, but it is hilarious.

Flyers need to dump both Sestito and Rinaldo back to the minors and bring up some skill guys with speed that will stay out of the box especially the way they are losing on the penalty kill now. They need to stay out of the box to win games.

Rinaldo is in his pre-Matt Cooke days now, gearing up for what eventually will be a hit that ends another players career. Perhaps this will send the message that Matt Cooke finally got. I doubt it. Keep the penalties coming for your team, Rinaldo! Those of us in the East love it!

I am happy that Shannahan decided not to punish the Flyers! :)

My condolences to Flyer fans that have to shrug when they hear comments by the likes of a couple of these ignoramus cheap-shot-rooting Flyer dudes.

sorry philly fans, but this just smells of typical flyers hockey. what role exactly does this player fulfill?

"nothing annoys Shanahan quite like guys that fail to get the message."

Good thing he made it so that Rinaldo is losing almost the exact same amount of salary instead of, I don't know, sending some sort or actual MESSAGE that he could "get".

good now maybe he will realize that cheap shots need to stop...

Seems like a weak ban. I agree that it was a penalty, and maybe a fine, but two games seems a little much.
    • Ben  •  3 months ago
Two games is pretty light for a guy leaving his skates. Hell Marchand got five. There's no consistency here.

Awful call and #$%$ explanation. Shanahan and the league flexing their muscles because Rinaldo continues to hit people hard despite their best efforts to neuter him.
