Flyers get their defenseman; it’s Nicklas Grossman of the Dallas Stars

The Philadelphia Flyers have gotten a jump on the trade deadline frenzy (or maybe helped to kick it off), acquiring defenseman Nicklas Grossman from the Dallas Stars in exchange for a 2nd round pick in 2012 and a third-round pick in 2013.

As we all know by now, the Flyers have been after a left-side defenseman to help fill the gap since losing Chris Pronger to a concussion, and Grossman should be able to do that.

The big Swedish blueliner probably won't be picking up any of the offensive slack that Pronger left behind, mind you. Grossman, 27, has never been a prolific scorer. He had two pro assists with Södertälje SK when the Stars drafted him 56th overall in 2004, and he wasn't a late-bloomer by any stretch: Grossman has scored 7 goals since coming to North America in 2005, 4 of which came with the Iowa Stars of the AHL.

That's fine, though. The Flyers' problem has never been offense. Even without Pronger, they're one of the league's highest-scoring teams. At the back end and on special teams, however, they need the help, and Grossman should be able to provide it.

    From CSN Philly:

Grossman is a stay-at-home guy, obviously, given he has no goals (five assists) in 52 games this season with Dallas.

He will help on special teams. Grossman averaged the third highest minutes on Dallas' special teams -- 2:13 on the power play and 2:12 on the penalty kill. The Flyers could use a little boost on both right now, especially the PK units.

Grossman was one of several defensemen the Flyers were eying. The other was Montreal's Hal Gill, who is older and has a Stanley Cup ring.

Technically, this is a rental, as Grossman is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year, but unless he really disappoints, you have to think the Flyers will consider re-signing him. He's currently making $1.65 million.

But, as rentals go, Grossman came even cheaper than you think. Neither pick the Flyers traded away was originally theirs: the second was acquired from the Los Angeles Kings in the Mike Richards trade and the third-rounder was the return for sending Darroll Powe to Minnesota.

Stars' fans don't seem all that concerned that the Flyers are turning a paper clip into a house here, either. From Defending Big D:

Grossman has just three goals and 41 points in 333 career games with the Stars and the past few seasons has seemingly hit a bit of a stumbling block. Despite his size, Grossman never embraced his physical side and was limited in the overall effectiveness he had during games. While he has been one of the Stars best penalty-killing defensemen the past few seasons (and perhaps the best this year), Grossman's struggles with the puck likely meant he would not be re-signed as an unrestricted free agent this summer.

We've discussed the possibilities of Grossman's future with the franchise and whether his limited upside would lead to him becoming expendable this season. GM Joe Nieuwendyk came to the decision that with the pending and likely departure by the defenseman it was time to get what the team could by sending him to a team that needs him for a playoff run, and Philadelphia has made the most sense -- and has been mentioned as the potential destination for over a month now.

Grossman was averaging the fifth-most icetime among defensemen, so he was certainly expendable. Plus Dallas gets draft picks, and who doesn't like those? It's like being given Scratch & Win tickets for your birthday. So much fun.

It's an upgrade from the Flyers current 6th defenseman in Lilja or Gustovson. That's what they wanted, and they can worry about long term guys like Suter after the year. Dallas gets some picks in return. Win for both teams.

Hes slow and prone to turnovers. I'm surprised the Stars received 2 draft choices.

"Grossman was averaging the fifth-most icetime among defensemen, so he was certainly expendable." -- Thanks for the article, but sarcasm does not translate well to journalism. I had to read this line a few times before I realized what you were trying to do. And then I shook my head and sighed.

Are you sure you realized what he was trying to do?

I'm still not sure what he was trying to do. Is fifth most in the league or team? If it's the team, shame on the writer for saving that tidbit for the very end. If it's the league, shame on the writer for saving that tidbit for the very end. Wait, what?

i guess he must have meant fifth most on the team and it wasn't sarcasm. in that case, it is a poorly worded sentence. that whole paragraph sounded a little sarcastic so that's why i assumed it was.

Neither pick was originally the Flyers, but they traded talent to get them - so I don't consider either of them cheap . . .

28 points for richards and carter has been a disaster in columbus. meanwhile the flyers yielded simmonds, voracek, schenn, couturier and other picks...so the flyers made out in a big way, believe it or not. it also allowed them to sign bryz, which hasnt gone so well, but that can change.

@ SimpleManiac - Yeah, that's what I thought when I originally read that. They were THEIR picks...how does that make them cheaper?

That's like going to the casino, doubling up your $100 on red, and then blowing it all on the blackjack table justifying it by saying, "well it was only my original $100 I lost anyway." A) It's still a loss; and B) at one point in the night you had $200 bucks in your pocket that was yours. You blew $200 bucks.

Great trade for Dallas. Two decent picks in exchange for a soon to be UFA.

The Flyers desperately needed someone who wasn't named Bourdon or Lilja, but man does that seem like a steep price to pay for Grossman.

Less so scratch and win tickets are moreso nevada tickets that you open between your beer league matches at the bowling alley.

If this is what passed for trade deadline drama, the clowns at TSN and Sportsnet are well and truly F3cked.

Signore Jim Bob . . . I have brought a bolt of the finest silk from the orient. The Duke of Savoy has authorized me to barter it for a comely young lass or a puck moving defenseman.

Holmgren loves throwing away draft picks like candy
      what a waste of a 2nd and a 3rd

he will make zero difference. The Flyers have no shot at the cup this year, total waste
      • saucehead09 3 months ago
You're right. Rather have that 3rd round pick in 2013 that might be NHL ready by 2015 or 2016 or might not make it to the NHL level at all.
      • TBTF 3 months ago
@ Saucehead09 - Keep in mind Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Alfredsson, Lundqvist, Lidstrom, Fedorov, and Bure all were late round pickups... Then there's also a 2nd rounder the Flyers gave up as well. And I think the most relevant point is Grossman not being particularly good in the first place...

Good solid defenseman. He played on the top pair for the past couple of years with Robidas and can handle any defensive assignment pretty well.
