Florida's Booth taken off on stretcher after Richards hit

A day after Colorado's Darcy Tucker(notes) was taken off the ice on a stretcher after being hit from being by Carolina's Tuomo Ruutu(notes), another scary incident took place in Philadelphia involving Mike Richards(notes) of the Flyers and Florida's David Booth(notes).

Towards the end of the second period, Booth was bringing the puck into the Flyers zone when he looked back as he was making a drop pass. A split-second later, Richards was cutting across and caught Booth's head with his upper left arm, knocking him out cold.

Richards was given a five-minute major for interference and a game misconduct. There will be plenty of debate over how long a potential suspension could be for the Flyers captain. Panthers GM Randy Sexton was not happy about the play saying, "Those types of hits have no place in the game." Sexton did not see the hit live, as he told the Miami Herald's George Richards:''When they didn't show the replay, I knew it was bad. Then they showed it. I'm sure the league will do a full review. The league wants to get rid of these shots to the head.''

Somewhere in Toronto, Colin Campbell was hoping for a quiet weekend.

UPDATE: George Richards reports that Booth is in awake and has movement in his extremities. He also has quotes from Flyers GM Paul Holmgren and Mike Richards:

Holmgren responding to Randy Sexton's comments:

''Randy Sexton needs to watch more hockey games,'' Holmgren said. ''It's a good hit. Mike Richards was just doing his job.''

Richards talking about the hit:

''Obviously, I was not trying to hurt him but separate him from the puck,” Richards said. “He turned, everything happened so quickly, it’s hard for me, I really didn’t see it. .-.-. I didn’t mean to hurt him. I don’t have a history of head shots. I don’t even know if it’s a head shot.''
