Evgeni Malkin enters Beast Mode vs. Tampa: Hat trick, 5 points, spectacular goal (Video)

In the third period on Sunday, after the host Tampa Bay Lightning tied the Pittsburgh Penguins in the third period, Dominic Moore of the Bolts was seen saying something to Penguins star Evgeni Malkin. Based on what happened next, he apparently said the wrong thing.

Already with two power-play assists on James Neal goals, here's Malkin scoring 48 seconds after Teddy Purcell's game-tying goal:

Vintage Geno power move right there: Unassisted, cutting across the crease, making it look easy.

Then Malkin entered Beast Mode to clinch the 6-3 win for the Penguins and a 5-point day for himself.

Here's Malkin's second goal just 1:49 later, assisted by Brooks Orpik, that's just a little more spectacular than the first.

The year is young, but this is one of 2012's most impressive tallies:

Finally, Malkin competed the hat trick with (ho hum) a perfectly placed empty netter from the red line:

With the 5-point game, Malkin now has 51 point on the season, trailing Henrik Sedin by one for the NHL lead. He jumped over eight players in the scoring race in one afternoon.

He nearly had a Gordie How hat trick to go along with his natural hat trick, according to Pensburgh:

Tensions boiled over. Lecavalier tried to check Malkin. Malkin ducked and avoided it. Lecavalier was displeased. He jawed at Malkin up and down the ice. Malkin gave him a little stick jab, then a shoulder bump into his shadower. His shadower came out swinging.

Before the next faceoff, Lecavalier was given a double minor for roughing and a game misconduct. Malkin was only given a roughing.

Damian Cristodero of the Tampa Times reported: "Lightning's Lecavalier left arena without talking to reporters. Coach Boucher said he believes Lecavalier thought Malkin went for his knees."

Please recall Malkin was suspended for a game in the 2006 Winter Olympics for kicking Lecavalier.

went for his knees? apparently lecavalier has never watched malkin and how he ducks hits the same way all the time along the boards.

Malkin wasn't the aggressor on that play, how did he target Lecavaliers legs. Vinny was just upset that Malkin took over the game in a way that Lecavalier hasn't been able to do in about 4 years.

I think Vinny was #$%$ because he realized just then that he has been the most over rated player in the league for like a decade.

worse than lecavalier accusing malkin of going for the knees is listening to the handjobs on nbc sports saying how malkin low bridged him, and compared it to the marchand hit. call me crazy, but malkin is avoiding contact, whereas marchand was skating into it.

The combined IQ of those two is my shoe size. Even with the first amendment its a crime to let those two speak their mind.

Truth is, when Geno turns it on like this, he's playing at a whole different level than anyone on the ice.

Vinny threw the hit, how the hell does Malkin ducking the hit translate to "going for his knees?" Perhaps Guy should have been paying attention to the game, maybe his team would have not gotten their #$%$ handed to them.

Awww, poor Lecavalier bumped his wittle knee on the boards when he tried to check Geno. Of course, it's Geno's fault. Vinnie, you're a such a #$%$

Don't make Malkin angry. You wouldn't like him when he's angry.

I thought lecavlier's sucker punch while the linesman were holding both players was far dirtier than geno trying to avoid the hit. I guess he's supposed to just stand there? He ducked away from the contact. That is a pretty common play.

Think Malkin would really go at someone's knee's after he just came back from knee surgery himself, yeah no, it's called check avoidance, he always goes down low like that when he is near the boards and someone is trying to check him.

This #$%$ me off only because I forgot there was an early game today, woke up late, and found that I didn't have Malkin dressed.

@Legal #$%$ funny to hear crap from a Rags fan, team has won ONE Cup in SEVEN DECADES and are relevant for the first time since the mid 90s, let's see how those juggernauts are doing come March then maybe you can start popping off again.

he's too inconsistent. sometimes he's the most dominant player on the ice. other times you check the box score to see if he even played a shift.

As a Penguins fan I fully agree. Some games he looks unstoppable, other game it's easy to sit and wonder how he won an Art Ross. I often say "All world talent, no hockey sense".

Lol wow you guys realize that even Gretzky had bad games right?
      • Ben 4 months ago
But at least when Gretzky had a bad game he still had positive outcomes on the games. When Malkin is off he makes horrible give aways and takes really dumb penalties.

Team is in 7 place, why do we care again?
      • Ben 4 months ago
Awe is someone upset that their team who hasn't played yet today isn't in the news. I mean 5 point games happen almost every night, why should they be talked about. Your bitterness is showing.
      • Nate 4 months ago
Because we're hockey fans and it's a natural hat trick.
      • Poopdaddy 4 months ago
because when the Pens are healthy they are one of the best teams period

Any time anyone associated with sports mentioned "Beast mode" I think of the Canadian produced digitally animated program, "Beast Wars". Or, as it was known in Canada, "Beasties". Upvote this if you know what I'm talking about.

This is the real Geno. He can do this almost at will. Lecavalier is a good player BUT not at 8 million. TB GM won't admit it,but boy is Lecavalier overpaid. Maybe the Habs should really try and get him. They have a HABit of overpaying under performers. I.E Scott Gomez, Brian Gionta, Tomas Kaberle(a joke ) . At least they dumped Cammarrelli's 6 million a year contract. Gauthier, you're done. Why don't you just resign?
