Kings’ Penner responds to pancake-gate in open letter, sponsors ‘Pancakes With Penner’ breakfast

    Dustin Penner dreams of pancakes

Poor Dustin Penner's been getting it from all sides since he threw out his back while bending over to help himself to a stack of delicious pancakes, and it's easy to see why. The Los Angeles Kings' winger hasn't exactly been lights out since the Kings acquired him last year, and his fitness has been an issue.

Thus, injuring oneself while eating pancakes, and showing no remorse by calling them delicious when disclosing the injury? Not awesome, except to those of us who make a living sharing hilarious, hockey-related things.

But Penner's had enough of the ridicule, and Wednesday evening, he took to MayorsManor to tell his side of the story. The result is a letter that couldn't be more adorable if it were addressed to Santa Claus.

Penner hits the most important topic first, the nutritional value of the infamously injurious pancakes:

Right off the bat, I'd like to clarify a few things.

For example, they were vegetarian pancakes. The injury happened as I was sitting down to eat, not mid-bite. And yes, I did finish them.

I don't think I've ever had carnivore pancakes, but it's good to know they weren't pigs in a blanket, at the very least.

Second, Sudden Onset Back Spams are no laughing matter, you animals.

In case you couldn't tell from the acronym, it is a condition to be wept over. Also, since Penner is clearly their most well-known sufferer, he'll be embracing his new role as the Moses of bad backs:

First and foremost, I think we can agree that having delicious pancakes that your wife made for breakfast, for a 1pm game, is not out of the norm. Secondly, "SOBS" (Sudden Onset Back Spasms) can occur at any moment, doing just about anything you can think of, and is a very serious issue.

Those who have experienced "SOBS," know it is no laughing matter. I'm a little hurt, to tell you the truth, that the plight of my people isn't being taken seriously.

Speaking of Penner's new found fame, it would be foolish if some breakfast chain didn't get on this.

So, I'm hoping to get an endorsement from IHOP or Denny's.

No Perkins? Perkins is where it's at.

And finally, to turn this ordeal into something positive, Penner will be partnering with MayorsManor on a charity initiative:

In an effort to end the entire experience on a high note, I'm partnering with MayorsManor to sponsor a 'Pancakes with Penner' breakfast. In the weeks to come we'll be setting up a special raffle. Fans will be able to purchase tickets for $1.00 for a chance to have a pancake breakfast with me. All the money raised will go to charity...while we enjoy some delicious pancakes!

That's just awesome. You certainly can't say the guy isn't a good sport about things. Kudos to Penner for diffusing the situation without pouring it on thick, and for writing a letter that was cute but not too syrupy.

Read the letter in its entirety at MayorsManor.

I assumed vegetarian pancakes meant no eggs, but to be sure I googled rules for vegetarians. What I found was an epic life or death debate amongst granola-heads about what it truly means to be vegetarian. As it turns out, some eat eggs, some don't, so I'm no smarter even after my dizzying journey into the inane world of vegetarianism.

Good foor Penner turning it into something positive, bummer for Penner and his crummy back.

inane, insane. Either one works. At least you feel better about yourself now.

Keep track of who was on what side of the debate. After the fall of civilization, we'll want to eat the no-egg ones first.

Usually the ones who will eat no animal products at all identify as "vegans" while the ones who will eat anything but fish, flesh, or fowl call themselves "vegetarians". And yes, it does get like a life-or-death argument among them, which is especially ironic considering what they are arguing over (the sanctity of life)!

Is getting injured sitting down somehow better than getting injured eating pancakes?

"I don't think I've ever had carnivore pancakes"

Really? You've never had pancakes that eat meat? Odd...

Nice to see some humor, the entire country needs a good laugh, or an enema, things are getting too serious.

"No Perkins? Perkins is where it's at." Unless of course you live in CA where there are no Perkins. Penner's Pancake Raffle, brought to you by Perkins, would be perfect for a grand opening.

the comments on here are ridiculous - penner is a good hockey player and the comments about how he should be embarrassed about eating pancakes on game day are just out of control - these players eat over 6,000 calories on a daily basis just so they dont LOSE weight. they could eat mcdonalds every morning and never gain a lb. not like you idiots who sit at your computers all day long, reading and writing about everyone else's eating habits when our whole country has sleep apnea from the weight of their fat torso's. i'm sure his eating habits have EVERYTHING to do with him throwing his back out while sitting down at the breakfast table. open your eyes you ignorant db's and smell the darn coffee.

long term cotracts are the reason... if you look at players like depietro louango bourque zetterberg ovechken penner gomez and much more they all doing bad i hope they stop that #$%$ know
      • A Yahoo! User 4 months ago
so lets see, louongo was in game seven of a stanley cup final last year, zetterberg centers one of the best teams in the league, OV is having a down season but still will probably finish around the 65-70 mark, so only 4 of the players you listed are actually bums and no one would have argued those with you.

Poster boy for big long term contracts becoming diminished assets..along with Rene Bourque of course...GM's need to be protected from themselves in the next CBA..no contracts over 3 years...or be like the NFL..no guaranteed contracts.

For people accusing this guys diet for his back problems and or sneering at this type of injury, I'm 5'10", 145 lbs and have had the EXACT same thing happen to me on several occasions (when I wasn't that old either) one time getting up from a chair my back seized up and was frozen to the spot for about half an hour, another time on the 'throne' and guess pushed a little too forcefully and was stuck there for over 4 hours! The pain is indescribably horrible and in my case, turned out to be from several lower vertebrae turning to mush from various accidents. People should lay off the guy unless they themselves have somehow suffered from this type of injury and then gone out to play a hockey game without the use of heavy drugs or any other crutch the same day... anyone who CAN, needs to checked out to make sure their nervous system works properly 'cuz I can GUARANTEE it's so bad you feel like you're going to puke or pass out... good luck to this guy in any case.
