Even though the broken leg he suffered in November has threatened his availability for Team Canada in the upcoming Sochi Olympics, Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning was one of the handful of locks from the talented pool Steve Yzerman had to choose from.

So while each of the 25 players named to the team were given calls from someone on the Team Canada staff, Stamkos also received a sweeter gesture: free cake.

(Malone responded: "thanks for another puck in the mouth... Taste like budussy! #daroad #daboyzzz." OK then.)

Ahead of their game Tuesday night in Winnipeg, The Fairmont hotel felt the need to congratulate the Lightning star on the honor by also rewarding his sweet tooth.

From the Winnipeg Sun:

"We just wanted to do something a little special for him, for being asked to be on the Canadian Olympic team," Colin Burdeniuk, director of rooms for the Winnipeg hotel. "It's very exciting."

...

Sales manager Joel Baron came up with the idea and it "ignited from there," Burdeniuk says.

Meanwhile, poor Martin St. Louis checked into his room only to find wrinkled sheets and a cake that congratulated Chris Kunitz.
