Did Blues’ Barret Jackman prey on Matt Cooke’s reputation for boarding call? (Video)

With just over a minute remaining in regulation and the teams tied 2-2 on Tuesday night, Barret Jackman of the St. Louis Blues went to play the puck in the corner. Matt Cooke of the Pittsburgh Penguins was right on his tail and delivered a check.

What happened next is a point of some controversy:

Cooke, who was given a two-minute minor on the play, made contact with Jackman's left shoulder; but Jackman landed against the boards face-first. Did Cooke shove him? Did Jackman twist to play the puck and land awkwardly? Did Jackman actually turn his back and dive into the boards to draw a call on Cooke?

Honestly, I'm buying the latter theory.

The Blues wanted more than two minutes. Cooke looked generally baffled by the whole affair. What a weird play.

The Penguins won in the shootout, 3-2. Cooke now has 17 PIMs on the season — very much within range to Cooke The Byng.

Who knew Barret Jackman is a better actor than Hugh Jackman?

Two options on this hit; either Jackman dove, face first into the glass, like a total plug, OR, Matt Cooke is THE STRONGEST MAN ALIVE!
      • Poopdaddy 3 months ago
        I choose option 1.

I like option 2. Matt Cooke pushes him so hard that Jackman spins even after hitting the glass, including a skate pivot. Matt Cooke should be suspended for 20 games for being Superman in a human league.

Personally I like the way his legs gave out, it was a nice added touch to the dive. I give it 10s across the board.

Almost as good as Malkin's dive in the 1st

i just dont get why a guy would risk a potentially serious injury to draw two minutes ... i have taken the corner of the dasher boards to the jaw ... it doesnt feel good by any means ... that being said, that was one hell of a sale ... cooke was flabergasted "i swwwear to Godd I hardly even touched him"

I find it odd that, for as dramatically has he hit boards, he didn't miss a shift.

He's a hockey player...? It's called being tough.

how can Cooke have 17 PIMS? he hasn't had a fight. He's at 16. Even the video clip shows he had 14 going into the game.

For once, Matt Cooke is innocent. That was complete and total embellishment. I love some of the reactions: Cooke just standing there and not defending himself after the hit (which players always do when they know they went too far); the Blues not really challenging Cooke; Hitchcock looking somewhat embarrassed on the bench; Cooke shaking his head watching the replay in the penalty box; all good stuff. But hey, we're all glad Jackman wasn't hurt :-)

The reactions are my favorite part. I wonder what Arnott was saying there in front of Hitch after he looked up at the replay.

Man did Jackman sell that one!! I can't believe he even *got up* after that *horrible hit*!
I have never defended Matt Cooke, can't believe I'm doing it now...but that was a dive and embellishing the 'injury' after. Blues are gonna be like the Nucks soon.

Maybe these two cooked up this scheme to heat up the Byng campaign...

what an idiot for diving, he could have broken his neck by trying to draw a 2min penalty what a clown

I absolutely HATE Cooke as much as the next person. BUT, with that said, Jackman really dove on this one. I'd like to believe that Cooke is back being dirty again but after watching this over and over...it was clearly a dive. He really sold this one. For shame.

Calling it a dive. Jackman looks back before it happens and sees who is on his tail, dives at the first bit of contact and is practically in the fetal position before even hitting the ice. Unless Jackman only weighs 20 pounds and can have his whole body sent flying by one arm on his shoulder, that was a dive.

blah blah blah we know you always write something negative about the Blues .. (just kidding). Did not see that part of the game but honest the announcers are only homers for two Blues, and not Jackman.

Jackman should be suspended. 1game for that stunt

Hopefully the homer announcers dont sway Shanahan on this. 2 mins fine if anything on this hit. He did look like he flopped himself into the boards there. Oh and going from excruciating, fetal position inducing pain, to looking fine on the bench also looks a little fishy

The best part is the Blues' announcers trying to talk this dive into being a "Matt Cooke crime against humanity."

The physics of that hit do not make sense
