Red Wings set NHL record with 21 straight home wins; Steve Ott: ‘That’s a phenomenal feat’

    AP

Twenty-one is a winning hand, in blackjack and on the ice.

History was made on Tuesday night: Twenty-one home games, and 21 straight home victories for the Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena. The Red Wings surpassed the 1929-30 Boston Bruins and the 1975-76 Philadelphia Flyers, whom they tied at 20 straight wins on Sunday.

The Wings' 3-1 victory over the Dallas Stars shattered the mark.

The victory had a sense of inevitability after the first period, when the Detroit Red Wings pumped 20 shots on the Dallas Stars' goal and got two pucks past Kari Lehtonen. Like in so many other victories during their record-setting home winning streak, the Wings looked like an unbeatable machine in the Motor City.

Here's how the final moments looked and sounded, as Red Wings fans made the barn sound like the waning moments of a Stanley Cup Final, and the players sent that love back to them in the postgame celebration.

First-period goals by Henrik Zetterberg and Brad Stuart set the tone; Jiri Hudler put the game out of reach at 15:11 of the third period. Adam Burish of the Stars broke Joey McDonald's shutout bid with a skate-to-stick goal in the last 33 second of the game — and old Chicago Blackhawks nemesis, back to provide a little rain on the picnic.

But nearly everything else went the Wings' way in hitting 21. They led in shots on goal, in takeaways and in blocked shots. They had a 3-to-6 advantage in penalties. Overall in the 21-game home winning streak, the Red Wings outscored their opponents by an 87-31 count.

Here's the streak, which began after a 4-1 home loss to the Calgary Flames on Nov. 3.

    Nov. 5, 2011 Red Wings 5, Ducks 0
    Nov. 8, 2011 Red Wings 5, Avalanche 2
    Nov. 11, 2011 Red Wings 3, Oilers 0
    Nov. 12, 2011 Red Wings 5, Stars 2
    Nov. 23, 2011 Red Wings 5, Flames 3
    Nov. 26, 2011 Red Wings 4, Predators 1
    Nov. 30, 2011 Red Wings 4, Lightning 2
    Dec. 8, 2011 Red Wings 5, Coyotes 2
    Dec. 10, 2011 Red Wings 7, Jets 1
    Dec. 17, 2011 Red Wings 8, Kings 2
    Dec. 27, 2011 Red Wings 3, Blues 2
    Dec. 31, 2011 Red Wings 3, Blues 0
    Jan. 12, 2012 Red Wings 3, Coyotes 2
    Jan. 14, 2012 Red Wings 3, Blackhawks 2
    Jan. 16, 2012 Red Wings 5, Sabres 0
    Jan. 21, 2012 Red Wings 3, Blue Jackets 2
    Jan. 23, 2012 Red Wings 3, Blues 2
    Feb. 8, 2012 Red Wings 4, Oilers 2
    Feb. 10, 2012 Red Wings 2, Ducks 1
    Feb. 12, 2012 Red Wings 4, Flyers 3
    Feb. 14, 2012 Red Wings 3, Stars 1

With that run, the Detroit Red Wings set a new standard for consecutive victories on home ice. Yes, a few of them came during overtime sessions that weren't available to the Flyers and Bruins. Maybe you feel that earns the record an asterisk. Bob Duff of the Windsor Star, however, found someone that disagrees — and he's not exactly a Red Wings loyalist:

Some have suggested that Detroit's streak should wear an asterisk, since the Wings have won three times in overtime and once during a shootout, but don't try selling that theory inside an NHL dressing room.

"I think if you talk to Wayne Gretzky about Sam Gagner (and his eight-point game), he'd tell you it's pretty amazing in this age," [Dallas Stars forward Steve] Ott said. "The players are a lot similar. The teams are a lot similar.

"That parity, it's so much closer than it was back in the 80s or the 70s, or even the 90s for that fact. It's a new era, a new game, and the guys are so well-versed on physical strength, mental strength. There's so many different methods of preparation — video preparation. So much has changed over the years. That's a phenomenal feat to win 21 straight home games."

Tonight, the Red Wings made sports history. Who's next?

Longest Home Undefeated Streak, One Season

        34 Games-Montreal Canadiens, 1976-77
        27 Games-Boston Bruins, 1970-71
      • Mashman 3 months ago
Jeff you keep saying that show us the link to prove it
      • Trisha 3 months ago
the "undefeated" streak that Montreal had in 76-77 included tied games. The wings set a new record for "wins".

How can the media take cheap shots at Detroit calling themselves 'Hockeytown"? I'm not a Red Wing fan. They have walked the walk.
      • Roger 3 months ago
It actually got the name "Hockeytown" due to the fact there are more sheets of ice in a 200 mile radius of Detroit than anywhere in the world...but as a Wings Fan I'll take HockeyTown" as a compliment in itself!!

Hope they don't settle for 21. GO WINGS!!!

To the asterisk lovers: The streak isn't a big deal. Obviously your team just hasn't gotten around to it yet.

VERY impressive. Even when Howard went down they kept on winning--that's about having a good system in place (and McDonald stepped up too).

It will be interesting to see if the Wings will make an effort to rest its veteran players leading up to the playoffs or if they will keep their foot on the gas. The president's trophy is nice but if there are guys with injuries (I've heard Wings' announces speculate Datsyuk is hurt, not sure if he is) the injuries won't get better during a playoff run.

I would hope the lesson has been learned over the years . Vancouver last year heck even the Wings 62 win season should show them the light . Rest is a must who wants to run out of gas in the finals . While us Wings and Pens fans tend to bash each other maybe out of respect i don't know i sure hope Sid comes back and we meet in the Finals so we can have 2 out of 3 battle with the score 1 to 1 something is missing .

        Go Pens & Wings

Way to go Wings!!! What I'd really like to see is 16 home wins later this Spring!

On a side note, I can't believe I actually agree with anything that Steve Ott has said. I feel slightly sick inside admitting that.

16 home wins in the spring??hello
      • Justin 3 months ago
if your talking about the playoffd, not so sure about 16 home wins, they would have to win some road games
      • Stick Boy 3 months ago
They only need 16 wins, and if they finish in first overall, it could be 16 all at home.

Considering that there are teams like Columbus that are hoping to get more than 21 wins in an entire season (they have 17 now), then Detroit's run of wins is even more impressive.

My friend's dad works for the Red Wings, and I'm so happy that this record went to such a classy team. Way to go Detroit, you deserved it.

There is a reason its called Hockeytown!

Everyone can have their own opinion. But the facts are clear. The "Wings broke the record in 2012 playing by today's rules and structure. A shootout is mandatory after an ot tie, and a win goes down as a win. The end.

Why cant fans just enjoy something special like this. All the negative comments are just from people who are jealous of the classy Red Wings!! Most of you wish that your team was like the Red Wings. The Red Wings have a great organization! Now lets go get the cup!! GO WINGS!!!!!

Have the San Jose Sharts ever won the Western Conference?
    • Razor  •  Muskegon, Michigan  •  3 months ago
The Wings had to travel more, played better competition and played in a league with 2 to 5x as many teams as the Bruins and Philly. This record is THE WINGS!! Neither of the other 2 teams could or would accomplish this feat today but back then if this team were playing, it prob would have the record at 50 straight home wins! Go WINGS!!

The Wings are just playing the way they should and the victories are piling up. I 100% gaurantee that if this was some of these trolls teams they'd be all up in arms over someone saying this record needs an asterisk. What ever. Personal and teams records mean nothing here unless you win the one trophy that matters. If not the year is a failure. We'll let you debate records. In the end.. The only thing that matters here are Stanley Cups.

The 21 home wins are great in them selfs However what would be even better with 34.5 lbs of silver and nickel alloy on top of the celebration cake? Now that would be nice. Go Wings
    • MC  •  Southfield, Michigan  •  3 months ago
Consecutive wins are nice to keep the team focused during a long season, but the Cup is still the ultimate prize. (It is difficult to compare teams in different eras. Just enjoy the accomplishment.) GO WINGS!

Couldn't have happened to a classier team and fan base. So proud to live in Hockeytown, GO WINGS!

Super impressive streak by these Wings. Just gotta tip my cap to them.
    • MajorTom  •  Baytown, Texas  •  3 months ago
While this is a great accomplishment, I'd like to see it soon forgotten and the Wings get down to business and win the SC. Too much media hype for something relatively irrelevant.

      Focus on the real prize!
