Despite the suitors, perhaps the Nashville Predators will hang onto Ryan Suter

137857816The Nashville Predators are currently fifth in the ever-changing Western Conference standings, three points from the lead in their division and nine points away from the playoff bubble.

At this point, it's assumed the Preds will be a playoff team; which means it's assumed Ryan Suter will finish the season in Nashville despite his impending free agency.

That was the conclusion Nick Cotsonika of Yahoo! Sports came to in his piece on Suter, in which the standout defenseman declared he wouldn't sign a new deal before the trade deadline. It's a conclusion seconded by a source to Frank Seravalli of Frequent Flyers as well:

"The consensus among us is that Nashville will be hanging onto him, even if they know the odds are not in their favor of re-signing him," one Eastern Conference GM told the Daily News on condition of anonymity. "If he does decide to trade him, [David] Poile has the market cornered. There are very few defensemen of Suter's caliber in the league and Nashville has two of them.

"You have to wonder whether the Predators can continue to trade away their top players for prospects because they can't afford to pay them."

Therein lies the rub for the Preds.

If GM David Poile deals Suter at the deadline before losing him in the summer, then the return is likely higher than trading his rights before free agency. Yet as Seravalli notes, trading Suter before the deadline would also send a mixed signal to fans on what kind of playoff team the Predators can be this postseason.

There hasn't been an unrestricted free agent of Suter's caliber to his the market in quite some time — if he does hit the market. We're talking Jay Bouwmeester and Brian Campbell numbers if he goes UFA.

The Predators want him back, using Pekka Rinne's recent monster contract as an act of good faith. Poile told ESPN that "I know we're one of the lowest payrolls this year, but going forward that will no longer be the case."

This all may come down to where Ryan Suter wants to play, rather than the dollars he'll play for.

I hope he stays. I have always had a soft spot for the Preds. But if he doesn't, we know what team has a history of trading with the preds.

as much as i would like to have some of those flyers forwards on the Preds (you guys have some to spare), i would rather have Sutes. Do you want Jonathon Blum?

I would love to see him in orange & black, but it'd also be cool if he stayed in Nashville. It seems to be a market that's READY to embrace hockey. What they've been able to do with such a small payroll is impressive...it'd be nice to see them have a chance to see it through.

Nashville has already embraced hockey, attendance is incredibly strong for a team that's only made it to the 2nd round once. Definitely one of the loudest arenas in the league.

If the Preds are serious about spending more then resigning them both won't be an issue.

This is one of those crossroads every team gets to. Either you trade/lose your star player and go down the tubes and everyone else looks to jump ship or you suck it up, pay the guy, add a player and get to the cup. Ott with Chara, Flames with Phaneuf, Chicago with Hossa plus..., Anaheim with Pronger/Neidermeyer. Always some GM who can get their team a step forward or back. The cap is just a excuse ....see Sather or Sabres.....

They have offered Suter the money. It has nothing to so with the money and everything to do with Poile not surrounding them with talent.

carter to nashville for prospects and picks and they will find another top six forward suter stays i think suter is more valuable then weber over the last several years weber struggles when suter is hurt suter plays better withour weber in the lineup hell of a toss up! they need at least 2 top 6 forwards NOW to keep them both carter and parise but they can only afford 1 of them after this year if poile is giving the money to cap limit he could make it happen easy enough they have tons of picks and prospects to play with.

No legitimate team that wants to contend will have let a player of Suter's caliber leave in free agency. If they want to be taken seriously as a franchise, they need to resign him.

Poile's best move is try to get that last piece. DP is quoted as saying the ownership has given the green light on spending to the cap. Of course, he isn't going to get player that might end up like Gomez. I think trading picks/prospects for Parise is his best shot at getting everyone on board - and getting the Cup!

New Jersey is one of the teams that needs a goalie and Parise wants to be traded to a cup contender. They need to dangle Lindbach out there.

Going forward with what ??? Attendance is doing well at the Bridgestone but I don't see the ownership putting up the money. They think they can ride the low payroll back into the playoffs and then see what happens from there. Pekka can stay hot and that itself can get you far, but you also need scoring in the playoffs because there are a lot of great number of goalies in the West. I just don't see a cup future here in Nashville until we get a committed ownership.

The Preds won't be able to afford him on the open market because they'll have to resign Weber this off season as well. Unless of course they want to tie up the majority of their cap space on 2 defensemen and a goalie.
    • Diehardnuck  •  3 months ago
Nashville has $31 million in cap space next year to sign Weber, Suter, 5 forwards, 2 more d-men and a backup goalie. That likely leaves about $16 million or so for the remaining 8 players - If they are serious about keeping Weber and Suter they will no doubt need to spend to the cap and even then they will have to make some hard choices about their 8 other UFAs/RFAs.
      • The Chipper 3 months ago
They spend to the cap limit might be more competitive but they will go broke. Hence the issue Weber and Suter are having. Why sign long term if the team really has no long term hope of fighting for a cup if they can sign somewhere that can fulfill both needs?? Suter will be a Red Wing and Weber will be a Canuck in two years.

Not preds fan, but I really hope these 2 stay together. One of if not the best d line in hockey.
    • Hater1  •  3 months ago
The Preds need a scoring forward. I think if they don't trade and/or spend for some offense, not only will they lose Suter, but will ultimately lose Weber as well. I think the Preds need to dangle Lindbach. A lot of teams in contention need a goalie right now.

Preds could package him up with Linback for Zach Parise..
    • steve  •  3 months ago
He's going to stay. Preds are going after Rick Nash-Lookout playoffs
      • Jay D 3 months ago
Oh that would be just superb. And pick up TJ Oshie in the offseason too.. The Preds would be so scary good.

I always hear some guys who might be traded but it just depresses me lol because I am a Red Wings fan and they are barely ever part of a big trade deadline move.

I would like to see him stay with the Preds. We have always been a defensive team so the speak. I think he and Shea make a great duo. I also know we need to have a strong push the rest of the year. Right now, the team has come together and the young guys are playing well. Trotz will keep the team focused and continue to win. Oops, that sounded like a player interview. Go Preds!!!!
