David Backes crushes Karl Alzner in Blues/Caps clash

Blues captain David Backes slammed Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner into the boards hard and from behind and was ejected from Sunday's game between the two teams. Backes is 6-foot-3, 221 pounds and was skating full speed.

Mega-ouch for Alzner. The below video:

Is this hit Department of Player Safety worthy? In Backes’ defense, Alzner turned at the last possible second as Backes was already pushing him into the boards. That being said, Backes is one of those ‘plays on the edge’ type guys but within a threshold.

Alzner just sustained a cut under his eye. To his credit, he didn’t exactly throw Backes under the bus under the game. Per Comcast’s Chuck Gormley, Alzner said Backes had a “lapse in judgment.”

Per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Jeremy Rutherford, any ‘DoPSing’ on Backes likely won’t come til Monday. In Backes' favor ... the fact that Alzner returned and was OK. Not in his favor. That was a brutal-looking boarding call.
