Dan Hamhuis suffered fracture after taking slapshot to face (Video)

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis suffered a facial fracture after taking a shot to the face against the New York Rangers in a Wednesday game and will undergo surgery Friday

The Canucks said a recovery timeline for the 32-year-old blueliner hasn't been determined. A video of the play is above. The shot came off the stick from Rangers defenseman Dan Boyle.

After the game, Vancouver Canucks coach Willie Desjardins gave an update on Hamhuis.

"He took the shot in the mouth, just on the upper part of his mouth and lost some teeth," Desjardins said."It's scary. It's a hard thing to take. He'll suffer with that for a little while."

Hamhuis spent the night in the hospital after sustaining the injury. Sportsnet's Dan Murphy reported Hamhuis was taken out of the Canucks' locker room in Rogers Arena on a stretcher.

Hamhuis had four assists in 27 games played this year. He’s averaging 19:40 of ice-time. The Smithers, British Columbia native is in the final season of a six-year $27 million contract.
