Columbus Blue Jackets to play host for 2013 NHL All-Star Game

Nationwide Arena - Getty ImagesAs Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch first reported on Friday night and was confirmed Saturday morning by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, the 2013 All-Star Game will take place Jan. 26-27 at Nationwide Arena with the Columbus Blue Jackets playing hosts.

The selection of Columbus for next year's event has taken awhile. According to Portzline, the Blue Jackets have shown interest in the past, but a few factors played into the delayed decision.

    From the Dispatch:

In the past, the NHL would not approve Columbus as a host for the game because the area around Nationwide Arena lacked a sufficient number of high-end hotel rooms needed to house sponsors, celebrities, players, etc. But a 500-room Hilton, being built just blocks from Nationwide Arena, is planned for completion by Sept. 2012, a month before the 2012-13 season opens.

Also, the league informed Columbus two years ago that it would not be considered as a host city until it achieved financial stability in the form of a new lease agreement.

That agreement was struck last month, when Franklin County commissioners approved a plan in which money from the still-under-construction West Side casino will be used by Franklin County to buy Nationwide Arena. In return, Nationwide has assumed a 30 percent ownership stake in the franchise.

Columbus makes it seven of the last eight All-Star Games to be hosted by first-time cities. You'd have to believe Phoenix might have been in the mix, but the uncertainty of their future makes that choice impossible.

So congratulations Rick Nash on your 2013 NHL All-Star captaincy ... that is, if you're not traded anywhere before then.

My dad went there for draft a couple years ago. Said the arena is spectacular, and the whole surrounding area is amazing.

What an awesome place for this. Columbus was crazy when the hosted the draft, I bet that place will be electric for an all-star game. Hopefully they keep the same format for it.

The arena is really nice, and the area has a lot of nice places to. The team has just stunk. Lots of Wings fans in the area that will not jump ship, and its not easy to build a fan base with a horrible team.

True, if they ever put a decent product on the ice it would be a great hockey town. The city wants to embrace the team but it's hard to do that when you consistently get top 10 picks (and then botch those picks)

Sounds to me like management is worse than the on-ice talent. Columbus has decent players. Mason peaked too early having a great season when they made the playoffs. He's gotta shrink his head back down to a normal size before that team can really move forward.

Either this will break the trend of home-town fans stuffing the ballot boxes to ensure that 5-6 of their players make the all star game or next year's all star roster is going to be hilarious...

The Jackets may suck, but Columbus is a great city to host a big event like this. The Arena District has a ton of restaurants and bars. The nightlife there is great. And the city was buzzing when the NHL Draft was there.

The CBJ didn't have any representatives in the all-star game this year. So, who will be the opposing team captain when this team continues its downward spiral into next season?

To Hammerhead, think before you speak. Columbus is called the "Blue Jackets" because the state of Ohio sent the most union soldiers to battle in the Civil War. The capital city of Ohio is Columbus and the union soldiers dressed often in blue jackets. Also, take a look at the jerseys, especially the third ones. Oh and a cannon is fired by men dressed as civil war union soldiers every time they score a goal. Apparently you flunked in world history class. I think the team has one of the most unique and more importantly appropriate nickname in the NHL.

They can keep the historic name and nice jerseys.... BUT they can never roll out the walking cannon mascot again.
      • HammerHead 3 months ago
Yeah, yeah, yeah... Volunteer regiments during the civil war they wore blue jackets. And Ohio had more than any other state... Blah,blah,blah...war,war,war...Custer & Ulyssees Grant are from Ohio....blah blah blah u.s patriotism.. I do in fact know my history yes. Obviously you don't know what the point of my comment is and instead focused on something completely irrelevant so you could respond and make yourself feel important...The fact remains Columbus is a waste of an expansion (along with nashville, phoenix and carolina to name a few) and is yet another another one of bettman's busts in his goal to americanize hockey. It's just not working... Fold'er up...file for bankruptcy or contract...

Wiz is horrible. If he's their lone represenative in the game next year that's more proof they're a joke, loser, turd of a franchise.
      • Joshua 3 months ago
They tried that in Columbus this year and it failed.
      • Ernie L 3 months ago
Everything has failed in Columbus. It's what happens when you make Nash your masterpiece

It should be home town captain vs. previous year's Stanley Cup champs captain, like Alfie/Chara this year. That's if the NHL keeps this all-star format. They should just throw their sticks in the middle next time!

about time they hosted it here, our rink is majestic.

Actually Ohio sports may be the worst of any state right now in history. Blue Jackets....Indians and Reds (ok one division championship last year), Bengals (worst team in the playoffs) and Browns, and the Cavs

agree with Greg K. Nationwide Arena and the area around is 1st class. I was in town and caught a game against the Ducks there last year. too bad there were only about 7000 people in attendance. As a Hawks fan, wouldnt it be something if all teams in the Central were competitng? Columbus unfortunatly is the divisions punching bag.
