Lt. Edward Walsh and firefighter Michael Kennedy lost their lives battling a blaze in Boston on Wednesday. Thirteen other firefighters were injured as the 9-alarm fire raged through a brownstone.

Ahead of Thursday night's game against the Chicago Blackhawks, the Boston Bruins stepped up once again to help the city deal with a tragedy. The team raffled off four seats on the glass benefiting the Lieutenant Walsh-Firefighter Kennedy Memorial Fund and held a 50/50 with proceeds going to the same cause. And during warmups, players wore Boston Fire Department hats.

Before puck drop, there was a moment of silence:

Via the Boston Globe:

“We lost two heroes here today,” Boston Mayor Martin Walsh said. “Today is just a sad day in the city of Boston.”

Richard Paris, the president of the Firefighters Local Union 718, said he knew both men and was proud of them.

“Two great firefighters. All those firefighters that worked there today—people were saved for their actions that they did in this fire today. Citizens were saved,” Paris said. “And that’s what we do. We sacrifice our life for the citizens of the city of Boston.”

The Boston Marathon bombings occurred almost a year ago, and in the weeks following, the city came together as the Bruins marched toward the Stanley Cup Final. This is another instance where head coach Claude Julien and his players are hoping to lift their neighbors..

“My heart goes out to the families. You know, you try to put yourself in their shoes and see how they have to react to that kind of news and if it happened to you how would you react, etc," said Julien.

"So not a fun thing to be part of, but certainly, like I said, we’re a group here that really rallies around this city and we’re going to try and make this city feel as good as we can with our play and let them know that our thoughts and prayers are with the families.”
