Bad Blood: Handshake line fight between North Dakota and Minnesota in NCAA (Video)

Before you watch this unconscionable act of unsportsmanlike conduct after North Dakota's 6-2 home loss to Minnesota, let's just all agree on the obvious: Ben Blood is, without question, one of the greatest hockey names currently in circulation, both because of the sport he plays and as a benefit for headline writers (see above).

That established: Blood, a 2007 Ottawa Senators fourth rounder, was a bit of an [expletive] after the game, going after Florida Panthers' pick Kyle Rau (2011, No. 91 overall) in the handshake line and then fighting with Seth Ambroz (2011, Columbus Blue Jackets, No. 128).

Blood was given a roughing and misconduct penalty for the skirmish.

This Saturday night game marked the final meeting between the teams at Ralph Engelstad Arena ice as conference rivals, and it was an emotionally charged series. (The teams split). From Goon's World, a Fighting Sioux blog:

As for Ben Blood going nuts this weekend, I would be willing to bet that he probably regrets that move today as he looks back on that incident.  Not the smartest move on Blood's part and it didn't portray him in a very positive light. We are all human beings and we all make mistakes. The near brawl at the end of the game also put a damper on an otherwise great series.

… I don't think we are going to see Ben Blood do that again, and I am sure most of us would not like to see that again.

Bob's Blitz, meanwhile, writes: "Ben Blood should never play another game for the UND Fighting Sioux."

In fairness to Blood, there was a scrum at the end of the game that got him angry, including a slash to his legs by a player who came off the bench, according to this broadcast.

If nothing else, this incident reestablishes something we've always said: The handshake line, despite being put over as the grandest of grand traditions in hockey, is begging for trouble.

(Lest we only publish a negative story on NCAA hockey story, check out the glory of the Frozen Diamond Faceoff between Ohio State and Michigan last weekend at Progressive Field in Cleveland.)

UPDATE: From North Dakota comes this update.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — University of North Dakota Head Coach Dave Hakstol announced today that he has revoked senior defenseman Ben Blood's assistant captaincy due to an altercation that occurred during the post-game handshake following Saturday night's game against Minnesota.

"Regardless of any provocation, Ben's actions in the post-game handshake were not acceptable," said Hakstol. "The handshake line is a traditional, gentlemanly part of our game where, at the end of a hard-fought battle, opponents show good sportsmanship and shake hands like men."

Hakstol added that Blood will be subject to further internal team disciplinary actions.

"I'm not proud of my behavior," said Blood. "That's not how I want to represent our program, and that's not how we handle ourselves here. I understand and respect the punishment, and I'll move forward and not let my emotions get the best of me in the future."

Stripped of his 'A'! My god, what's next, making him pay for soda!?

any f*ckstick that intentionally slaps a puck at an opposing forward deserves to be McSoreley'ed. There is no excuse for that kind of a#$%$ behavior in hockey.

I played with a chick who did this in one of our games. She punched an opponent in the head during the handshakes and all hell broke loose. As her teammates we had to get involved and try and break things up and pull players off of her. Needless to say we were all pissed off at HER and not the other team. Totally classless thing to do and she wasn't welcome to play with us the following season.

It is not the handshake line which is begin for trouble. It is the increasing number of players who have no class. And that is a problem that is something that their parents are failing to teach them.

It would be an overreaction to say Blood shouldn't play for UND again but at the very least he should probably lose the "A" on his sweater.

Really for a little shove and a weak wrestling match? I understand that this game was over and he shouldn't have done it. But there were no punches thrown and it was broken up pretty easily. He just pushed a guy... BFD

I should have watched the video before reading the article and comments, way too big an overreaction... he shoves a guy and then wrestles a completely different guy... nothing any 16yr old hasn't seen in a game. Move on, who cares. A hit from behind is worse than this.

As classless of a move as that was in the game, I at least appreciate the kids quote at the end of the article. He owned up to his actions, realized how stupid he was, and accepts his punishment. I'm not absolving him from this idiotic move, just stating that I appreciate his ability to be mature in the aftermath, which is something adults 10 years his senior aren't capable of in other sports...

He is trying to apologize to save himself, not because he means it. A person with this mentality does not change overnight. He has no self control and is a poor sport..two things no team needs no matter what potential he has..there are a thousand more behind him as good or better who can control themselves and can take his place.

If you are commenting on this and have never watched the Gophs/Sue series, then you have no idea. This also happened a couple of years ago in Minnesota. This was no surprise. I enjoyed it. M-I-N-N-E-S-O-T-A!

ICE Hockey - The gentlemens game played by gentlemen with some sore loosers and official thugs to rough-up opponents. Not duplicated in Field hockey.

there should be a league that allows this sort of thing.. like the Ultimate Hockey Fighting Championships

Great job by the referees in keeping order at the end of the game. Break them up and escort them off the ice.
Other sports could learn quite a bit from the way things are handled in hockey.
The Xavier/Cinncy brawl is the perfect example.
