3 p.m. ET (SL) -- The deadline is here and deals can still be announced. Be sure to stay tuned to Puck Daddy for breaking news and for our team-by-team grades later on.

2:50 p.m. ET (SL) -- Here come the deals! First up, the New York Rangers trade Marian Gaborik to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Derick Brassard, Derek Dorsett, John Moore and a sixth round pick. The other big deal has the population of Pominville decreasing as one. The Star Tribune's Mike Russo reports that the Buffalo Sabres captain heads to the Minnesota Wild for Johan Larsson and Matt Hackett. Here's our take on the Gaborik, and here's what we think of the Pominville trade.

One Milbury: Columbus stays busy as they acquire Blake Comeau from the Calgary Flames for a fifth-rounder. Expiring contract for a draft pick. No harm, no foul.

2:25 p.m. ET (SL) -- Steve Mason is on the move! The Columbus Blue Jackets have sent the netminder to the Philadelphia Flyers. Here's our take on the deal.

2:20 p.m. ET (SL) -- The Ottawa Senators have landed a fourth-round pick and Cory Conacher from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for goaltender Ben Bishop. Is this Steve Yzerman selling high on Conacher? Here's our take on the deal.

2:15 p.m. ET (SL) -- This is how crazy deadline day can get: Mike Russo of the Star Tribune is reporting that Wild netminder Darcy Kuemper has been sent to the airport with his equipment, but hasn't been told where he's going, if anywhere at all. He could be joining the team in San Jose or sent out via trade. It appears Minnesota will make a move of some substance within the next 45 minutes. They're reportedly in on Jason Pominville.

2:05 p.m. ET (SL) -- The Florida Panthers have now made one trade and one signing af announcing they've come to terms with Nick Bjugstad from the University of Minnesota. He was their first round pick from the 2010 NHL Draft. Bjugstad, you might recall, has seen his name throw into the mix in a potential Roberto Luongo deal.

2 p.m. ET (SL) -- This is it. We've reached the final hour of the NHL trade deadline. Remember, trades can still be announced after 2 p.m. ET as long as the teams are in line for the trade call with the league. There were 13 deals in the 48 hours before today, yet we've only seen four moves completed so far. Is there a final hour push?

Washington Capitals center Mike Ribeiro was one of the names who could be dealt today. Ribeiro wants a long-term extension and reportedly rejected a 3-year offer last week. He told Katie Carrera of the Washington Post that he doesn't see himself signing an extension today or on the move.

If you were wondering, the lockout-shortened 1995 season saw 20 deals on deadline day, including the Pierre Turgeon for Kirk Muller swap between the Canadiens and Islanders. Muller, so enthused about Long Island, lasted all of 27 games with the Islanders before being dealt to Toronto the next season.

1:50 p.m. (HM) -- Still pretty slow out there, so this update comes in the form of a Petrarchan sonnet:

Scott Hannan, Jerred Smithson, Sauve, Flick,
Thus far, this trading deadline has been weak.
The pundits, analysts and bloggers seek
A topic to discuss -- a trying trick.
With Jokinen, the Penguins made a splash.
They got a guy who just last week was waived,
But hard to say this trade the deadline saved,
When Carolina had to give up cash.
Another hour and some, and then we're done.
Perhaps we'll get a stunner even yet,
But on that stunner I'd be loath to bet.
Luongo to the Leafs could be quite fun,
      And Pominville to Minnesota too.
Though poison to my coffee mug would do.

1:30 p.m. (HM) -- We have a trade! The always-active Pittsburgh Penguins are back at it, this time acquiring Jussi Jokinen from the Carolina Hurricanes, a week after he cleared waivers. The Hurricanes get a conditional pick and reportedly take some money back as well.

Two Milburys: Jokinen is a good pickup for the Penguins. He can play centre or wing on a defensive line and he plays well with skilled players, something the Penguins have in abundance. Basically, he fits in almost anywhere on a team with a plethora of options. While he's fallen out of favour in Carolina, it's very possible that he'll re-find his game with the Penguins and make the Hurricanes look foolish so being so eager to get rid of him, especially since they're still paying part of his salary and the pick is conditional.

1:15 p.m. (HM) -- Jason Pominville is one name that's being bandied about, and according to Mike Russo, the Minnesota Wild are showing interest in him after losing out on Ryane Clowe Tuesday.

The Wild is making calls and I do hear it is one of many teams that has been talking to Buffalo the past few days about captain Jason Pominville. I know the Wild has scouted Buffalo recently, too.

The 30-year-old right wing was asked to submit a list of eight teams the other day that he would not accept a trade to. Minnesota was not on that list, I am told.

It never hurts to add skill, as Zach Parise and Ryan Suter have shown the Minnesota fans this year. Pominville's creativity could be dangerous alongside a scorer like Parise.

1:00 p.m. (HM) - Jerred Smithson, whose first name is spelled just ridiculously, has been traded from the Florida Panthers to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a fourth-round pick.

One Milbury: This is a small trade, not the sort that's bound to come back and haunt a franchise. Smithson is a big, tough winger that will add a little edge to the Oilers, but where he differs from guys like Mike Brown, Ben Eager or Darcy Hordichuk is that he can also play a little defence. He'll help. As for the Panthers, they're not making the playoffs, and with Smithson a UFA in the offseason, they were going to lose him for nothing son enough. Better to get a pick.

12:45 p.m. EST (SL) --Scott Hannan to the Sharks is a done deal, pending the trade call. Hannan is a UFA this summer and comes with just a $1 million cap hit. He averaged 19:29 time on-ice through 29 games this season, but it was obvious he'd lost a step.

One Milbury: Both teams benefit. The Predators free up a spot on their blueline and grab a conditional 7th round pick, while Doug Wilson makes a low-risk, high-reward move. If he plays in a playoff game, the pick becomes a sixth-rounder. Hannan comes cheap and should things not work out, there's always waivers.

12:25 p.m. EST (SL) -- WE HAVE A TRADE TO ANNOUNCE! Boston sends Maxime Sauve goes to Chicago for Rob Flick, per Darren Dreger.

But seriously, there may be a trade coming with an actual NHL player involved. Pierre LeBrun reports the San Jose Sharks are close to acquiring Scott Hannan from the Nashville Predators. Sharks GM Doug Wilson said this morning he was looking to pick up a veteran defenseman and it looks like he'll fill that void with Hannan.

12:10 p.m. EST (SL) -- The waiver wire might be busier than the trade market today. Mike Santorelli stays in the Southeast Division going from the Florida Panthers to the Winnipeg Jets, and Adam Hall was claimed by the Philadelphia Flyers. If you're keeping track at home, Hall began the year in Tampa, was claimed on waivers by Carolina on March 16, then dealt yesterday back to the Lightning before heading to the Flyers today after going through waivers. Adam Hall is the new Zack Boychuk.

12 p.m. EST (SL) -- If you're looking to shore up your goaltending situation, Ottawa's Ben Bishop is looking more and more likely to be on the move today. With Craig Anderson returning from injury and Robin Lehner playing well, Bishop is expendable. The upcoming RFA has reportedly received interest from five teams, including the Phoenix Coyotes, according to Bob McKenzie. Mike Smith is set to be a UFA in the summer, but they would like to re-sign him soon. Bishop could make for a nice backup with Jason LaBarbera a UFA after the season.

As the Islanders fight for spot in the playoffs for the first time since 2007, a source tells Newsday's Arthur Staple that Garth Snow has inquired with Chicago about Brandon Saad, who has 17 points in his last 16 games. Given his upside, what would the high price be for Saad, and what would Snow be willing to part with in order to get into the playoffs?

    • Getty ImagesEntering Wednesday, one of the biggest storylines was what the future would hold for Calgary Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff.

Last week, Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos reported that Kiprusoff would not report to a team if he was traded and instead would retire. Then after a few days, the talk heated up again, with Kiprusoff being connected with the Toronto Maple Leafs. It appeared he was contemplating going forward with such a move, but TSN's Darren Dreger and Sportsnet's Roger Millions report that the 36-year old goaltender will remain in Calgary and retire at the end of the season.

Flames GM Jay Feaster had been in contact with Maple Leafs GM Dave Nonis and Kiprusoff's agent, Larry Kelly, but even the idea of a potential contract extension after this season wasn't enough to change his mind. So does this now put Nonis' focus on to Roberto Luongo?

James Reimer called the deadline a distraction, and with all the buzz around what the Maple Leafs may or may not do, he won't be the only one to see 3 p.m. ET come and go later today.

11:55 a.m. (HM) - Jack Johnson has left Blue Jackets' practice. Has he been dealt? Or perhaps he just had a cramp. But probably a trade! Oh man. This is it, friends. This is finally it!

Oh wait, nevermind. Cramp. The team says he's just visiting with the trainers. As you were.

11:40 a.m. (HM) - Scratch Miikka Kiprusoff off the list, and not because he's been traded, but because he really doesn't want to be. According to Darren Dreger of TSN, Kiprusoff really meant it when he said he didn't want to go.

The Leafs did their best to convince him, says Damien Cox of the Toronto Star:

GM Dave Nonis pitched Kiprusoff on the idea of coming to Toronto on Tuesday, and then began discussions with agent Larry Kelly Wednesday night on the possible parameters of an extension.

That would have to be a gentleman's agreement, as an actual extension to Kiprusoff's deal can't formally be done until the summer. It's likely the Leafs would be willing to pay Kiprusoff in the neighborhood of $5.5 million for one more season after his current contract expires after next season.

But it looks like Kiprusoff is staying put. Chances are he plays out the rest of the year in Calgary then retires with one year left on his contract.

11:15 a.m. (HM) -- Still no trades to report, but we did get an update on a trade that happened yesterday. (Hey, remember yesterday, with all its activity, at least compared to this morning so far? Sigh.) New Ranger Ryane Clowe had a few words to say on his way out the door in San Jose:

Wow! Crazy couple of days! Want to say thank you to the Sharks organization and all the wonderful fans in SJ for treating me so great the last 8 years. It was a blast and I will miss it. Extremely excited to be joining the NY Rangers. Getting an opportunity to play in New York and at MSG is special."

Here's hoping we get a few more tweets like this today, because it means more player movement.

11:00 a.m. (HM) - It's been an uneventful morning thus far, but fret not, because the bottom of the last hour yielded a couple of explosive, big-time quotes from two GMs that project to be active today.

First, Dave Nonis of the Toronto Maple Leafs, who told TSN the following: "Right now it's very quiet."

And then, we got this huge update from Phoenix Coyotes' GM Don Maloney: "We are doing a lot of listening right now."

So don't fret, you guys. Putting two and two together here, we can surmise that it's quiet because everybody's listening so hard. The future is bright.

10:30 a.m. (Wysh) - In case you were wondering, here are the top 10 teams as far as committed payroll for the 2013-14 season, as of 10:30 a.m. on deadline day:

You know, I don't want to say the Tampa Bay Lightning have been slightly mismanaged financially over the years, but ...

10:00 a.m. EST (Wysh) - According to Sportsnet's Brad May, the Philadelphia Flyers are in hot pursuit of Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle, which just makes a ton of sense.

He's got that $5.25 million cap hit through 2016, but he's the elite-level defenseman the Flyers were chasing in Shea Weber last summer and a player that could easily bolster what's been Philly's biggest weakness this season.

9:50 EST (SL) -- Hurricanes defenseman Joni Pitkanen will miss three months after that terrible injury on an icing race last night. Fellow blueliner Jamie McBain was a healthy scratch last night and has been rumored to be available. Does this Pitkanen injury, along with the acquisition of Marc-Andre Bergeron change his availability? Bob McKenzie reports that McBain could still be had, for the right price. Then again, so could most NHL players.

NHL Deputy VP Bill Daly was on Sportsnet this morning and said that Olympic discussions continue with the sides "working through" issues with insurance and travel, as well as the ability for the league to use content from the IOC. Another meeting has been scheduled in the near future, so it won't long before the NHL in Sochi is officially official.

Daly also gave an update on the Phoenix Coyotes situation saying that they league is still trying to find an owner and would help a buyer make things work in Glendale. So status quo.

9:20 a.m. EST (SL) -- Looking at the standings, who might be the sellers today? Florida and Colorado are two teams you'd have to think are already planning for 2013-14. The Calgary Flames and Dallas Stars have already begun dealing pieces away for futures. But what of the Philadelphia Flyers?

As of this today, the Flyers sit six points out of the No. 8 seed and it appears head coach Peter Laviolette and GM Paul Holmgren are safe. So what do they do? Do they ride out this season, hope for a top lottery pick (James van Riemsdyk, 2007), try to make a big splash over the summer and go for it next season? Or is there a move out there that's possible to help them make a push for a bottom seed in the East? Jaromir Jagr might have been an interesting move, but that's now gone.

9 a.m. EST (SL) -- Do you need a defenseman? Maybe you could convince Dale Tallon to part with Dmitry Kulikov, as Pierre LeBrun opines, or even Keith Yandle from Phoenix, for the right price, of course.

Yandle's name has surfaced in rumors for some time now. He still has three years left with a $5.25 million cap hit attached to his name. The Philadelphia Flyers might a team that would be interested in Yandle, but at this point, the Coyotes are better off waiting until the summer if they decide to listen to offers to increase the bidding war.

Kulikov has one year left and a $2.5 million cap hit for next season before he is scheduled to become a restricted free agent. The Panthers could be big sellers today with this disastrous season almost behind them and with an eye for the future.

New York Islanders captain Mark Streit's name has also come up, and while it's unlikely he'll sign an extension before the 3 p.m. ET deadline, GM Garth Snow has no interest in dealing his captain, per Darren Dreger, and the sides aren't far apart from a new deal. After their win last night, the Islanders are now tied for seventh in the Eastern Conference. They need Streit for their playoff push.

      It's trade deadline day!

Now, maybe you're not all that excited. That's understandable. With 10 trades happening in the two days prior, a lot has already happened. Several of the big names are off the board too, from Jarome Iginla, Jay Bouwmeester, Jaromir Jagr, Derek Roy.

But it's possible that this day could be a lot of fun. After all, 10 deals is a whole lot more than we saw in the days leading up to last year's deadline. Same with the year before. And furthermore, the prices for the abovementioned guys have all been pretty reasonable, which means that it may not be as much of a seller's market as we once thought. It's possible that Jay Feaster and Joe Nieuwendyk playing pushovers has helped to set a friendly market. That could mean some serious dealing.

Plus there are still a lot of names rumoured to be in play that haven't gone anywhere. Let's take a look at 20 of them:

Read More »from Will they or won’t they? 20 players that could move on trade deadline day
    • Getty ImagesLook, we're all entering today with the lowest of expectations. Unlike in years past, the biggest names that were going to serve as trade bait have been dealt, and a slew of moves have been made in the past 48 hours. Who's left? Well, if you're into second and third tier players and a slew of draft picks trading hands then you're going to love today!

It's going to be a long eight hours. If you're waking up at 8 a.m. ET and watching the coverage until 3 p.m. ET, then you're going to need a little help to keep you interested as TSN and Sportsnet's panels which could make up a small city sit around and look at each other hoping a major trade occurs.

With that, your friends at Puck Daddy are back with our annual Trade Deadline Day drinking game. We hope this helps and please do add your own submissions in the comments. We suspect that'll be more fun than these next seven hours.

      Enjoy.

8:50 a.m. EST -- At this point, it would be a surprise if Buffalo Sabres captain Jason Pominville isn't traded today, what with the submission of teams he wouldn't go to and the intense interest in his availability around the NHL.

There's some buzz around Montreal being hot for him, but there are several teams in on him. But again, the problem for Buffalo is that there's that pesky no-trade clause limiting their scope to 21 teams.

8:30 a.m. EST -- The Raffi Torres watch is on. The Phoenix Coyotes are likely to deal the soon-to-be UFA and destroyer of Hossas. He's a commodity for playoff teams, and his former team the Vancouver Canucks appear to be in the driver's seat.

8:00 a.m. EST -- OK, so Jaromir Jagr was traded. And Jarome Iginla and Jay Bouwmeester. And Brenden Morrow and Douglas Murray Ryane Clowe and Michal Handzus and Jordan Leipold and Derek Roy and Robyn Regehr. It doesn’t mean the NHL trade deadline is going to move at a turtle’s pace or be a tedious marathon of inactivity. There could be, like, an Ian White trade.

      Sigh …

Here's how things will work today on Puck Daddy: As per usual, we will have live blog posts going up every hour, on the hour. Trades, news, analysis, observations or general pithiness will be published on top of the most recent information in the post, so it'll end up reading in reverse chronological order. In other words: Hit refresh and check the top of the post. A lot.

Once again, we'll have our Chatterbox up and running with the Twitter feeds of beat writers and news breakers around the NHL.

If you're looking to check out Wyshynski on Sportsnet, it's streaming on Sportsnet.ca.

On Sportsnet and on Puck Daddy, it's the return of a deadline favorite: The Milbury Scale, in which we rate a trade's fairness and effectiveness with floating noggins featuring perhaps the most inept general manager in the history of the NHL.

For those of you who are new, here's how it works:

      miasdsl4

One Milbury: A fair trade that helps both teams, both in the short term and in the long run. No winner, no loser: Just a solid deal founded on smart financial and hockey needs. Think Brad Boyes for Dennis Wideman.

Two Milburys: A trade that could, down the road, burn one team in a big way. We're talking a trade of blue-chip prospects for a rental, if the team that's renting clearly isn't going to win it all this season. Joe Morrow for Brenden Morrow? Two Milburys.

Three Milburys means a clear winner in a deal at the time of the trade. Someone got a little too desperate, or someone just got hosed. The Jarome Iginla trade? That's a 3-Milbury special.

Four Milburys! Bertuzzi, McCabe and eventually Jarkko Ruutu for Trevor Linden! Roberto Luongo and Olli Jokinen for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha! YASHIN! DISASTER!

So there's that. What are your predictions for deadline day?
