BROOKLYN, N.Y. – At first it was just like old times. At 6 p.m., when fans where allowed to entered Barclays Center, the faithful crowd let loose with their first Let’s Go Islanders! chant of the evening. Later, during a ceremonial puck drop, legends Bryan Trottier, Bobby Nystrom, Mike Bossy and Billy Smith were at center ice donning jerseys, like they had done so many times before in the old barn 29 miles east.
But once the puck dropped for real, a page was turned and a new era began for the New York Islanders franchise.

Mike Babcock’s return to Detroit in the regular season as the coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs went quite poorly.
The former longtime coach of the Detroit Red Wings saw inspired play by a group he helped grow and develop, and was partially done in by a rookie who never suited up for him.
Dylan Larkin fired a gorgeous coast-to-coast goal and Justin Abdelkader potted a hat trick for the Wings.
The Red Wings honored Babcock with a message on the scoreboard and fans cheered for him during the moment. This made the normally stoic Babcock a little emotional.
"It was nice of them to do. They sure didn’t have to do that," Babcock said via ESPN.com. "I’ve said it a number of times, I’m glad this is all over to be honest with you. The Leafs played the Red Wings today and they won. It’s that simple."

James Wisniewski's debut season with the Carolina Hurricanes lasted all of 47-seconds.
Nashville Predators forward Viktor Arvidsson (who?!) is battling with Wisniewski for the puck when he gets tangled up with the lower body of Wiz. As the defenseman hits against the boards, the weight and momentum of Arvidsson pushes his left knee in a direction it's not supposed to bend.
WARNING: The injury is kind of gnarly. I dry heaved a little when I watched it.
Wisniewski had to be helped off the ice by his teammates. It was later announced he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) on the play and will be out approximately six months. That would place his return to the ice around mid-April. Unless they prove most of the prognosticators wrong, the 'Canes probably won't be playing at that time.

Former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Mike Commodore has taken to Twitter to voice his displeasure toward new Toronto Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock.
And he sounds quite angry per his social media account.
Commodore used some rather harsh language with his tweets, which are all linked here. He has not played in the NHL since 2011-12 when he suited up with the Red Wings for 17 games that year and notched two assists. Later he explained his beef with Babcock, but it was much more G-Rated than what is below.

The NHL season has started, which means many, many fresh Jersey Fouls have come rolling into our email and sent to us via Twitter. Hence the return of Jersey Fouls of the Week, a column that will run throughout the year.
Thank goodness – you can only get so many of the same Connor McDavid fouls before they’re not funny anymore.
Check out the above person’s inability to spell ‘Quick’ on a Team USA jersey (@_sben88). Not sure what Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick (not Quack) thinks of that.
If you want to submit, make sure to email us at email@example.com or tweet to the hashtag #jerseyfoul. We’ll pick them up, and try to make sure to give credit where credit is due. We’ll throw them up on our Tumblr page!

Aaron Ward, the former NHL defenseman and current TSN analyst, was arrested on Friday in Cary, North Carolina, and charged with "assault against a woman," according to WNCN. He was also charged with “interfering with emergency communication,” a law that you can read more about here.
According to WRAL, Ward was arrested at his home:
According to police, Ward's wife called 911 after the two had a confrontation around 1 p.m.
According to the warrant for his arrest, he took away his wife's phone.
Because of the nature of his charges, Ward will spend a mandatory 48 hours in the Wake County jail. Anyone arrested on a domestic violence charge is held for 48 hours before bail is set.

Mike Babcock makes his return to Detroit – well, in the regular season – as the new head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
But rather than facing a Red Wings team that had to throw away the script when he departed, he faces one that’s trying to continue the legacy of success he helped build there. Jeff Blashill, the new head coach, is preaching the same kind of pace and puck control that Babcock did.
And like Babcock was with the Wings, GM Ken Holland’s the reason he’s there as head coach.
The Detroit Free Press’ Mitch Albom asked Leafs president Brendan Shanahan about the disciples of Holland, who are not only coaches but also GMs like Jim Nill with Dallas and Steve Yzerman with the Lightning.
"I'll give Kenny the credit," Shanahan says. "There are certain organizations in hockey that have the kind of leader that makes you want to stay in the game.
"Kenny, Jimmy Nill, they were good, they were fun, they were pros and they were kind. And I think that's why you see a lot of Red Wings stay in hockey.

Targeting players like Saad is a good way of finding value for Yahoo Daily Fantasy Hockey. Here are a few more value plays who will make constructing a lineup a little easier.
GOALIE Michael Hutchinson, WPG vs. NJD ($20) - Chances are, Hutchinson will start Friday as the Jets open the season with back-to-back road games. If so, Hutchinson gets a nice matchup against a Devils team that finished 28th in goals last season and doesn't seem likely to have a much improved offense this year. He comes dirt cheap in comparison to the evening's highest-priced goalie, Henrik Lundqvist ($39).

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Chicago Blackhawks spent a third summer since 2010 celebrating a Stanley Cup championship and a fifth off-season since 2009 recovering from playing hockey into late-May, early-June.
The off-seasons have been short. Three of them have featured parades and parties, and not a lot of time for the players to prepare for the following season.
Six Blackhawks – Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Marian Hossa, Brent Seabrook, Duncan Keith and Niklas Hjalmarsson -- have been on board for all three Cup wins. And as the off-seasons have come and gone, the way they’ve prepped themselves for next year has evolved.
