Alex Pietrangelo out at least three weeks with knee injury

St. Louis Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo was placed on injured reserve Monday after suffering a right knee injury Saturday in a 4-1 win against the Minnesota Wild.

The Blues said Pietrangelo will be re-evaluated in three weeks. The all-situation blueliner ranks fourth in the NHL, averaging 26:40 of ice-time per-game. He’s had a bit of a down year, with 23 points and three goals in 55 games. He’s also a minus-6 on the year.

Pietrangelo suffered the injury in a knee-on-knee collision with Minnesota’s Charlie Coyle. A video of the play is above. Coyle did not receive a penalty.

The 26-year-old Pietrangelo has twice been a second-team NHL All-Star. In 2011-12, he finished fourth in Norris Trophy voting. In 2013-14 he finished fifth in Norris voting.

According to War-on-Ice,  Pietrangelo has a minus-1.72 CF Rel% 5-on-5, meaning the Blues possess the puck more when he’s not on the ice. His CF% is 50.40 while 5-on-5, meaning the team holds onto the puck more than their opponent when he plays.

“We've done a helluva job in dealing with injuries to significant players and this is another one,” said coach Ken Hitchcock according to Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "We'll adjust and keep going. Not much you can do about it. Big thing for us is just mentally move forward as quick as you can."

The Blues are 30-17-18 and gone 6-3-1 in their last 10 games. With 68 points, St. Louis is three behind the Dallas Stars for second place in the Central Division.
