It was good to have some of that Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Washington Capitals magic back on Wednesday night in an intense, unpredictable game between the two, right?

It was, pardon the excruciating pun, a sticky situation for Alex Ovechkin. Check out Ovi getting his lumber slashed out of his hands and then scoring on a wicked one-timer to beat Marc-Andre Fleury:

Good on Oveckin for keeping his “gloves out begging for a call” to a minimum so he could snipe that puck. It was his league-leading 34th goal.

Alas for Ovechkin, the stick adventure didn’t end there. In the final minute of play, his lumber snapped twice as the Capitals attempted to send the game into overtime. The second time, Ovechkin had to waste precious seconds at the Capitals’ bench as another stick was wrangled for him.

The Capitals lost, 4-3, to their arch rivals. Maybe they should challenge them to a game of ‘pick up sticks’ …
