Alex Ovechkin says we forgot to flush him down the toilet

While Mike Milbury of NBC Sports Network was composing the career eulogy for Alex Ovechkin throughout the season, the Washington Capitals captain has quietly turned his season around.

And he described this turnaround in delightfully scatological terms.

As he told Stephen Whyno of the Washington Times:

“I just try to do my best,” Ovechkin said.

"Right now I’m scoring goals and I’m the king of the world. And a couple weeks ago I was almost in the toilet. So maybe you just forget to flush me.”

“SOMEBODY GET ME A PLUNGER! WE’VE GOT A RUSSIAN STUCK IN THE CRAPPER!”

Alex Ovechkin was named the NHL’s first star of the week after scoring five goals and three assists in road wins over the Winnipeg Jets (twice) and New York Rangers, as well as a loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Overall, he has 11 points in seven games.

The Capitals meanwhile are two points out of the No. 8 seed held down by the New York Rangers, who the Caps beat in a shootout on Sunday.

So there you go. We didn't flush Ovechkin. We're also never going to call him a "floater" again without washing our hands afterwards ...
