Alex Mason scores goal of 2012 in Minnesota high-school hockey game (Video)

It began with a nice play on the penalty kill for Detroit Lakes High School senior captain Alex Mason, who intercepted an opponent's pass and then fought through another player to earn a breakaway.

It ended with one of the most spectacular goals of the calendar year, at any level of hockey competition:

In a Saturday night Minnesota State High School League game against Bagley/Fosston, Jones faked to his backhand to get the goalie moving, and then lifted the puck on his forehand into the top of the net. To control the puck like that, at that speed ... sick.

Mason finished the game with two goals and three assists. Western College Hockey Blog called it something they'd never seen before. It's Always Sunny In Detroit called it "a Datsyukian-like move that would have been the top play on 'SportsCenter.'"

Garnering almost as much attention as the goal is the look of the player that scored it. Mason has flowing hair as a tribute to his Mahnomen Indian roots, as a member of White Earth Reservation. He lives on the reservation, but attends a high school located elsewhere.

Here's Mason in a video from August 2011, talking about his Native American traditions and heritage:

As Mason said last summer, he's received some interest from junior teams in Canada to continue his hockey career. This viral video goal is one heck of a calling card.

I was a house league keeper for 17 years, and twice I gave up the ol Michigan goal, via pick the puck up an jam the stick around on post an slam the puck in high. I actually stopped one attempt at as well. This is just a brilliant new variation of that move, with a puck lift an DUNK over the committed keeper!!!!

I feel better about the mess we are leaving these young people if we have guys and gals like him coming up. Isn't it great that it was a hockey player who made a great goal and not singling out one's heritage. The spirits have blessed him.

      what an inspirational kid.
      not afraid to be himself.
disgusting that he has to put up with crap about his heritage at school.

Alex brought tears of joy to my eyes. Strong, handsome, proud, sensitive and he knows who he is. Diversity is Americas strength, let's not lose it by alienating young men like Alex. When people ridicule him with "war cries" they are simply jealous. Best Wishes to him and his family.

Am I the only one who notices he actually lays the puck on his backhand side of the stick?

A 220 lb high schooler who could skate with that kind of power and flow, then use his stick to do whatever he wants to with the puck whether on the ice or in the air. I would think that more than just "junior teams in Canada" would be looking at this guy.
