Alex Galchenyuk believed bridge deal was right decision in new contract

Montreal Canadiens forward Alex Galchenyuk wasn’t looking for long-term security in negotiations for his new two-year, $5.6 million contract. In some ways, it seemed like he was going for the Subban model – taking a short-term bridge deal to eventually sign for greater riches when he’s more established.

Galchenyuk said the bridge deal was his idea, and after consulting with new agent Pat Brisson, realized it was the way to go.

Subban had a two-year $5.75 million bridge deal before cashing in majorly on an eight-year $72 million contract last summer. He proved his worth, and Galchenyuk believes he can do the same.

“I think it’s as simple as going out there on the ice and just prove myself and help the team as much as I can and see what happens in two years,” Galchenyuk said. “That’s about it.”

In just two years in the league the 21-year-old Galchenyuk has shown excellent offensive ability at a young age. Last year he had 20 goals and 46 points with Montreal.

“I do expect to have a great year. I’m really focused and really can’t wait to get it started with,” Galchenyuk said.

As to whether he wants to play on the wing or at center, Galchenyuk said it didn’t matter all that much. At Montreal's end-of-season press conference, GM Marc Bergevin didn't seem to believe Galchenyuk would play in the center role long-term.

“Whatever is better for the team, that’s what I’ll play,” he added. Sigh, where's the fire in the belly Alex. Make a strong-worded statement and stick to it!

As for changing agents from Igor Larionov to Brisson, Galchenyuk didn’t go further then saying it was a “better option” for him.

Congrats on staying in Montreal for two more years Alex. May you cash in mightily in two seasons – or so that seems to be your hope.
