They’re moments frozen in time.
Like Dave Bolland completing an improbable comeback for the Chicago Blackhawks and winning the Stanley Cup in the process. The scramble of the defense. The way Bolland earned the shot. The puck sailing into the net. It’s all quite classic.
This photo didn’t make our 10 greatest hockey images of 2013, but another Blackhawks’ classic (and a few Bruins ones) did.
Here’s the list …
The Tampa Bay Lightning veteran's monstrous legs became a sensation in the preseason. Also, they can be used as a floatation device. (Dirk Shadd/AP)Nail Yakupov Celebration
On Jan. 24, Yakupov scored a game-tying goal against the Los Angeles Kings and proceeded to wildly celebrate by sliding down the ice on his knees. Thus began the "act like you've been there" debates. (Andy Devlin/Getty)
The Traveling Jagrs were one of our favorite fan stories of 2013, as a group of Jaromir Jagr fanatics traveled the country and celebrated his various tour stops. Here they are in, uh, a rather candid moment. (Barstool Sports)
The Montreal Canadiens brawler faceplants on the ice after his second bout with Colton Orr on Oct. 1, right before being stretchered off. A scary scene that sparked an intense fighting debate. (Richard Wolowicz/Getty Images)
There wasn't much room for art during the NHL lockout -- it's most popular image was that of an empty podium -- but that all changed when Pierre LeBrun of ESPN and TSN photographed a room full of tired and cold reporters on Jan. 2. His TSN colleague Darren Dreger was front and center, looking creeptastic. With that, #DregerFace was born and become a Twitter sensation.
The perfect example of how champions pay the price for the ultimate moment of glory. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)Matt Cooke Slices Erik Karlsson
The look on the Ottawa Senators defenseman's face says it all. On Feb. 13, Karlsson's Achilles tendon was sliced by accident ("ON PURPOSE!" - E. Melnyk) by Matt Cooke of the Pittsburgh Penguins. (Gene J. Puskar/AP)Gregory Campbell Gets Up
In Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Gregory Campbell blocked a shot and broke his leg. And then he continued to kill a penalty on that broken leg, becoming a cult hero in the process. (Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)
This is Simon Courcelles, a centre for the Thetford-Mines Isothermic of Quebec's Ligue Nord-Americaine de Hockey. His face was sliced open during the game. That's the photo we wanted to put here, but for the squeamish, we'll just go ahead and link it here. And then use a scouring pad on our eyes.
Boston Marathon bombing victim Jeff Bauman waved the fan banner before Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. The Bruins' reaction to the bombing as an organization, from the "Boston Strong" iconography to the relationship with local law enforcement, provided some of the most stirring moments and images of 2013. (Ed. Note: A few people have mentioned the Charlie Coyle image with the young fan from earlier this season. We tried to avoid using screen grabs for this one, focusing on photography. Hence the omission.)
