Hours before the franchise tag deadline, the Washington Redskins announced they have named Orakpo their franchise player. That means they must be prepared to pay him a one-year tender of nearly $11.5 million if the two sides cannot work out a long-term deal.

Orakpo, 27, is a three-time Pro Bowl player who had 10 sacks in 2013, including seven in his final seven games. Although he has been beset by a few injuries, Orakpo has been one of the Redskins' best defenders since being the team's first-round pick in 2009. He has 39 1/2 sacks in his 64 games, having missed 14 games in the 2012 season.
The Redskins and Orakpo's representatives have been talking about a contract extension but to date have been unable to come to an agreement.
