Michael Davis, the younger brother of San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis and Miami Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis, was arrested Thursday night in Washington, D.C., in connection with a hammer attack that left a woman hospitalized. Davis, 19, is also suspected in three similar attacks, one which ended in the murder of a 66-year-old man.
Police say they arrested the teenager after a woman was assaulted Thursday night in northwest Washington. He was seen in the vicinity by undercover officers and fled on foot, dropping a bag that contained a hammer. The attack, which left the woman badly injured, was the fourth in the neighborhood in recent days.
WJLA reports Davis' father confirmed Michael's identity.
Vernon sent an ominous tweet early Thursday morning that seems to reference his brother's arrest:
Vernon and Vontae starred at Dunbar High School, two miles away from the scene of the crimes. Vernon became an All-American at nearby Maryland, while Vontae played his college ball at Illinois.
The attacks left residents on edge since they began Tuesday night. A Denver nurse was found in a Petworth alley with multiple head injuries and later died. Two other women remained hospitalized from similar assaults.
"From what we know," D.C. Chief of Police Cathy Lanier said, "this attack was sudden and completely unprovoked."
She said she's confident the attacker is in custody.
