UCLA comes down with a case of Tebowmania

Getty ImagesIt's a shame that the NBA and NFL season don't run concurrently, because I'd have liked to see if Tebowmania would trump Linsanity or vice-versa. Maybe the two would just join forces and go out for ice cream together, and the world would explode.

At the moment, Los Angeles is one of the few places in the world where Tebow-Mania might still have an edge. Tim Tebow is working on his mechanics with UCLA's offensive coordinator, Noel Mazzone. Head coach Jim Mora has noticed a spike in attendance at UCLA's practice facility. Via Peter Yoon at ESPNLosAngeles:

"There's a little Tebowmania going on here on the UCLA campus," Mora said. "There's a few more girls hanging around the football office and the football field that there typically are."

I wonder if that feels a little emasculating for UCLA's current players.

[ Reality: No Linsanity if he didn't play in New York City ]

Tebow's there working out with Mazzone, alongside Christian Ponder and Philip Rivers. Mazzone coached Rivers as the offensive coordinator at North Carolina State in '03 and '04. He's a well-respected coach, but he's got his work cut out for him with Tebow. Timmy completed just 46.5% of his passes, and that was with defenses pretty much begging him to throw.

Here's more from Mazzone on Tebow:

"He's obviously a guy that wants to get better, like they all do," Mazzone said. "And wants to kind of become good at his craft and his craft is being an NFL quarterback. Like Philip Rivers. There is nothing I'm going to say that's going to make Philip Rivers any better than the quarterback he is, but they love to compete, they like to play and they like to get better at what they do."

    We'll see how that goes.

this just in....tim tebow has blown his nose. c'mon media- give the guy AND us a break. as a born again Christian, i admire him for his faith and his willingness to use his sports platform in a soul winning effort. beyond that, let the guy do his business at ucla and hopefully it will benefit him next season. but when i read an article and he is being compared to dan marino- STOP THE PRESSES. to my recollection, all of marino's records were set during a FOURTEEN game schedule and the teams he played on were definitely marginal at best. i grew up in the 60's and '70's and qb's liike marino, staubach, montana, bradshaw, stabler and maybe one or two others were TRULY elite. trying to insert tebow or any young qb with a partial season as the starter under his belt is simply ridiculous. like most sports fans, i am interested to see how tim tebow does in a full season- but until he ACTUALLY does something GREAT on the field it's just hype!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agree with your thoughts Bob, but Marino played from 1983-1999, they went from a 14 game to 16 game schedule in 1978. He also only played for 1 team, the Dolphins

Everybody talks about Chris Chase, but this MJD clown makes him look good. Is it all this guy can do, follow around Tebow and rank on him? Why does he hate this kid so much? At least he's trying to get better, and I hope he does get better and make you eat crow!!
How did all your trash talking about the Giants not having a chance go, still choking on the feathers from that one!!!
      • Myotis 3 months ago
There have been suggestions that Chase and MJD are the same guy or twins

"It's a shame that the NBA and NFL season don't run concurrently..."

They do, in a regular season. This is presumably just a typo, but the NBA season usually starts in November, meaning that there's a fair bit of overlap with the NFL season. Even in the shortened season, the NBA has been going since Christmas and the NFL season just ended a couple of weeks ago.

I get that the point is that you wish Linsanity had happened earlier in the NBA season to compare to Tebowmania, but that opening sentence is inaccurate and misleading.

Tebow is a QB in the NFL with Denver. What does Tebows love life have to do with being a QB in the NFL? I care less about Tebow's personal life. I want him to be an effective QB and Denver to win games. How many years has all the other QBs played in the NFL; Rodgers, both Mannings, Brady, Brees, Matthews, Rivers etc..? A lot more than Tebow. Maturing as a QB takes time. Rivers missed the snap in a game and they lost. All QBs make errors in a game.

If first you don't succeed, you try again, this is what is Tebow doing!
MJD is there something wrong with that?

His work ethic, his mores and ethics in general, will eventually result in more opportunities for the nay-sayers to eat their words - again. What are most of the players doing at this time - working out?

I said this in another post, but don't understand where the Guru status comes from regarding Mazzone, He played QB in NM and then started coaching QB's for 12 years with quite a number of colleges. Finally got promoted to be an OC for another group of colleges and then a year as OC at a high school before going to Arizona State for a couple of years and got fired along with Dennis Erickson and now with UCLA. If Mazzone had developed guys like Peyton Manning, John Elway, Brees..... I would feel better about this but has worked with Rivers (no Championships) . With quality help, I believe Tebow can be a super QB but Mazzone is not that guy.

Tim Tebow and Tom Brady (and John Elway) are prime examples of how unpredictable choosing and developing big-time professional athletes can be. Both Tebow and Elway were first round draft choices and their first and second seasons were anything but great successes. Tebow's was better than Elway's. Tom Brady was drafted #199 and had first and second years very comparable to that of Elway's. Factor an all the variables and supporting players and then tell me which of the three was more successful. I think Tebow wins hands down. I am sticking by my assertion that at the end of his career, he (Tebow) will have been just as good, if not better, than Brady or Elway.

Those who dump on him now are doing so because of his Christian beliefs. Their negativity says more about them and their final resting than words they could utter. That is that they will most likely bust hell wide open.

Damm can't go one week without a Tebow story.Just stop shoving him down everyone's throat. Nice guy but never going to be an NFL QB so just get over it!
    • JayH  •  3 months ago
Tim will get better as an NFL QB. It's ALL about experience and the talent that surrounds you. DAN MARINO only made it to the super bowl once and he lost. Think about THAT!! The BEST QB statistically speaking, held #$%$ near EVERY record and he NEVER won it and only played in it once. Tim will get better. His mechanics will improve. His heart CAN'T get bigger. He IS a true leader. His faith is unquestionable. Will he win the big one?? Time and surrounding talent will tell.

Tim Tebow is dating Kim Kardashian. They're starting their own reality show too. Yahoo would have a field day.

This is a major step in Tebow's growth as an NFL quarterback. Look for Tebow to have a breakout year next season. Wouldn't be surprised to see him take Broncos deep into the playoffs and earn MVP consideration.
